I can't believe that groundbreaking is 2 years away. This was not sprung on anyone yesterday! What the heck have we been doing all these past few years? We knew we had to jump thru hoops (no pun intended) but was there any doubt SOMETHING would get built? And just suppose it all fell thru and sank like the Titanic - did you ever hear of returning the contributions already collected? This whole thing is SO GEORGETOWN - if all of this is true.

Breaking ground in2 freaking years??? Might be a little too late to save this program. I hve to say I've been positive about the program going forward, but I'm really starting to feed into negativity going forward given Kirby leaving and reports from events re: how we play and realignment most likely continuing. We need to win somehow with the group we've got and win big if we have any shot of staying relevant. There are some big big obstacles to overcome at this point. Overreact much? Hoyatalk much?Fixed.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect groundbreaking for a project we have known about for a decade to be able to break ground 1 year after getting approval. I am not saying the shovel should have been in the ground the day after the approval was given. I may be overreacting to our program's future, but this building is DIRECTLY tied to how we can compete going forward. To me, delaying this another few years to even START is unacceptable and is really going to a test of whether Gtown stays relevant or not if as I mentioned this realignment continues and our recruiting going as it has. I now feel we truly are at a tipping point....

Not sure if this adds anything, but I have heard that ground breaking is scheduled for 18 months from now, with an 18 month build. So 3 years to completion, which means, if no significant delays, opened for summer of 2015.
Kids we are recruiting now from Class of 2013 would have 2 years in the new facility, assuming they play the full 4 years.
As T-Bird said above, the construction timing is contingent upon the athletic department successfully raising half the project cost ($32.5 mm) before ground breaking.

Melo's donation came in 2009. Six years after he left Cuse as one of the biggest stars in college and the league. To expect Gtown NBA guys to donate like he did is unreasonable. In five years, sure, when both Roy and Jeff are their third or fourth contract and making major money. Melo had his own shoe named after him!
Also interesting to note that Melo gave $3 million to the project of only a $19 million total. 19, thats it. That should underscore how much more difficult it is for Gtown to undertake these kinds of projects that schools that arent in dense urban areas (or wastelands like Syracuse).

That should underscore how much more difficult it is for Gtown to undertake these kinds of projects that schools that arent in dense urban areas (or wastelands like Syracuse). Also, we don't know if Jeff/Roy/Taglibue/etc donated money to the IAC. There has already been $6 million raised and I assume that some (or most) of that came from former players. And really, all the ancillary stuff should not effect whether or not we as fans contribute to the project. Taglibue covered this at the meeting. There are 3 things that must be answered before building a facility--1) Is it needed?; 2) Have the design/zoning/infrastructure approvals been obtained?; 3) Is the funding secured? The answer to question 1 is yes. The answer to question 2 is almost (part of the 18 months involves more regulatory approval and finalizing designs) but it will happen. When question 3 can be answered in the affirmative, they'll break ground on the facility. The sooner the money is raised, the sooner they break ground and it gets finished.

On edit: TBird said it better than me one post up.
Yes, GU started in 2007. Then the recession hit, and all projects were put on hold. Which was the prudent thing to do. When they restarted, they did the Science Center first -- in large part because it was eligible for stimulus funds which helped to kickstart it. Science Center is now done and so they're turning to the ATF.
The process is what it is. Again, as we discussed back and forth about three or four pages upstream, the current building design concept is all of two months old. It takes time to actually develop the design of a building. And then get construction drawings together. And go through the permitting process. And fundraise millions of dollars.

The sooner the money is raised, the sooner they break ground and it gets finished. Yep, and the best part is that this is the part of process that we (fans, alumni, etc) have an actual, tangible effect on. I am excited. I think the time for blaming is past and we should all look to see how we can help complete this project as soon as possible. If that means $10 or $10,000,000 or just encouraging other alumni to donate than you have done you part.

You don't spend $$$ on construction documents until you have all necessary approvals. The number of floors in this building changed in the last go round - so we should have spent hundreds of thousands by proceeding on plans we would not be able to use? There are no shortcuts in the proper construction of a buildng - believe me, I've been in the business for 45 years.

The point is that from NOW on our recruits will be able to use the facility. That is great news and obviously helps.

I'm not sure KC was questioning the commitment of Jeff green to the program. If he was, then thats ridiculous. However, if he's asking how much our basketball alum are donating, I think that's a fair question and I'd be curious too. Carmelo was only at cuse one freakin year and contributed significantly to their facility so I would expect our alum to do the same which they may be doing. This.

just got back from the JCW in chicgo. so new to this. it was GREAT NEWS that the university got the zoning approval . We all must be really thankful that the ENTIRE university worked like crazy doing this. The panel imo and that of many others was the highlight of the weekend. And i dont mean to take away from the great honor to the honorees including mike karam past hoop club pres but this panel was gu at its BEST. they described the need the means the will and the message in a very personal and heartfelt way. IT IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST BBALL. yup that was clear . we do bball AND all sports the wright way the georgetown way and thats something for ALL of us to be very proud of. yup so if its ten dollars or ten million dollars EVERY DONATION COUNTS. YUP wright now cause its 1951 we NEED to get it done and now its this board , all hoyas .. all alums and friends to help make this happen NOW. go hoyas congrats to the university for doing this and this IS THE MAIN FACILITY PROJECT OF THIS CAMPAIGN to make our facilities for 750 student atheltes support THEM as they support and represent us. go hoyas one and all. I have not paid much attention to the recent capital campaign. Is there a direct way to give to the IAC project? Not pooled into some metanamed/teleological feel goody element of the campaign, but bricks and mortars of the IAC.

You can do that through the contacts on the last page

You can do that through the contacts on the last page Thanks. AD Reed should be pounding down doors to get a fundraising function up on GUHoyas. It probably would "step on toes" given other priorities, but if this thing is the top priority of the capital campaign for new buildings, they should be willing to have more direct fundraising exposure. Something like that would also cause us to invest directly in the program. Pay $50, and you get your name on a wall kinds of things. $50K to get your name on a locker. $100K for a row of seats. Bundle some donation packages with HHC memberships and tickets. Lifetime ticket packages and the like. Just brainstorming, but that is an easy way to get money (or easier than the e-mail folks directly in the rabbit hole that is McDonough thing). On Edit: And please give us some candy by releasing the designs, if that is now possible with the board approval.
