That's exactly what a Cuse guy in my office said today. "What, they're gonna take away our championship?" To paraphase a pro-herb character in Dazed and Confused: it would be cooler if they did. Here's a question--if Cuse had its title vacated (making them the first basketball program to lose a national title, I believe), where would it rank in terms of all time great moments for Georgetown fans? Behind the Final Fours, I assume, and probably all of the Big East titles, but top 15? top 20? top 25? Top 15 for sure.

Boeheim has been the ultimate "hands off" look the other way coach for years. Violations, drugs, misogyny, chummy bg giving boosters have all gone unchecked on his (lack of) watch. And according to a report about ten years ago the graduation rate for black basketball players at Syracuse was abysmal. And yet the program is treated as if it is a model for big time athletics. On this issue Boeheim is just like his buddy, Gary Williams, who also kept players in his program and on his team despite knowing his guys were not on track to graduate. Contrast that to Papa John Thompson who used to run guys off all the time if by their sophmore season they did not appear to be doing what was needed to eventually graduate. Look, Boeheim has been at the program for like a century an won one championship. Was that championship during a season in which his team dominated and stayed in the top five or top ten all year long? No. The championship came during a season in which the Cuse remained in the bottom half of the top 25 and finished 4th in the Big East. It also got its head handed to it by either UConn or Pitt in the BET semi-finals. But what happened after that? Syracuse got a bit lucky. First the Orange was kept in the East region for some reason although most experts thought Pitt, winner of the Big East title, should have been rewarded by being kept east instead. Somehow Syracuse got the advantage of staying close to home. Next the Cuse got hot at the right time as they rode the brilliant play of freshman Carmello Anthony. And last, and most important, the Cuse's final four games came against Big Eight teams (or were they Big Twelve by then) all of whom looked as if theyve never seen a zone defense before. And considering the coference they played in they probably never had. As a result Boeheim finally got his championship. Kudos. But the program has never been as dominant as its fans and its media slurpers have made it out to be. And when they wear the crown, when they go into a post season as one of the heavy favorites, they tend to bow out early.

Misogyny!!! You really must be the scum of the earth when the message board that is always complaining that the "novelty" of Doris Burke has worn out starts calling you misogynistic! (N.B. You can't spell scum without SU, either)

Does Boeheim know anything that is going on with his program? Does he know the BET is in NYC? Does he know what time his team practices/will play? Does he know the players' names? For a guy Sean McDonough BRAGS about having his "finger on the pulse of all things CBB" he doesn't have a clue what is going on?
Yep--the BS is flying again. Maybe Boeheim has his finger located elsewhere--as we've come to realize through stories of the Fine Family "gatherings" but let's just say I am tired of the Dictator like coaches taking all this praise for being "God" and when the crap hits the fan--they are just coaches and "teachers" who have no knowledge of anything. Enough with the lying-admit your **** Jimmy B and can't wait to hear the spin doctors--Pasch, Mcdonough, Burke, Raftery (Billy has gone so soft he'll stick up for "Jimmy") defend him and his lack of awareness to the drug issues. For God's sake--that team had Cheddar Bob on it. If he breathed on anyone they would fail a drug test for over a year.

RDF, my thoughts exactly. What does he know? It is impossible for him to be unaware of failed drug tests or at least heavy use. Sell your soul for a shot at the title.

A. Yes, I agree. Those who are saying, "well everyone smokes" are completely missing the point.
But...
B. For those who are saying that, how do you know it was weed and not, say, coke? Do you still feel the same way? Because that is just as likely, particularly at Syracuse.
Just curious.
Many have known how bent Syracuse and Magoo are and have been for decades. Rony Seikaly basically bragged about how his coach had no control over the program and didn't care. You think Billy Owens heart problems were natural, given that is older brother was basically a coke dealer? (not to mention a rapist later on in life). If Carmelo Anthony went to a single class in his time at Syracuse, it was to sign autographs and nothing more. The list goes on and on and on.
I can only think of one reason that this has not come down sooner, and it's basically that everyone thinks Boeheim is just a swell guy. (Well, also that the media is literally littered with SUcks alums).

if only they could take Fagan and the Uconvicts with them when they go...
Syracuse is, was, and always will be a joke while Magoo is in charge. Now we know how he got the nickname. He is actually myopic to the extreme. Ray Charles could see that Syracuse is a filthy renegade program and has been for 30 years. However, Jimbo could not see that. Really, that's plausible.

Also, I think someone mentioned this on Casual, but holy crap, they are really in denial over at Troy Nunes.
This comes to mind:

This comes to mind: Cuse homer in my office in TOTAL denial- -"that writer" is totally in the tank for Pitino, so no surprise it comes out right after Cuse beats them (which writer he meant, Forde or Robinson, is unclear) -we're not talking about performance enhancing drugs, right? and of course, -this has Gloria Allred written all over it.

Maybe Pat Knight was justified to go on his rant. I commend the program for apparently bringing in good kids who compete but understand that they need to work. Based on the 3 issues that have come out in the last 2 weeks (Pat Knight rant, UCLA and now the unmentionables) I suspect this problem is not uncommon and that this is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm glad our program puts a higher priority on bringing in guys with values rather than just guys with basketball value. Personally, I would gladly lose out on a Fab Melo type player if recruiting those types of players means this type of representation of the university later.

Has anyone seen anything about what the potential penalties might be? It looks like the NCAA has had this for a while now, but of course they won't do anything prior to the tournament--bad for ratings and all that, you know. But I haven't seen any discussion of what this might mean.

I suspect they will do nothing since it is an internal Syracuse policy.
