Can someone please explain what Starks did during the Seton Hall game to warrant a full game benching?

Have Directv but it was blacked out in Charleston. Thanks to whoever gave the link for the CBS streaming coverage. Anyone else who watched streaming, wanna buy a 16 foot ladder? Good game to get the Seton Hall one well behind us. Defense and rebounding were really good. Loving Otto more each game. Clark continues to be the steady one. Funny that Bowen always seems to put points on the board in the few minutes he occasionally gets. Must be some hidden reason he gets no PT. Blast the Irish. Ed, DirecTv showed the game, you should have watched it on your TV.

Can someone please explain what Starks did during the Seton Hall game to warrant a full game benching? There was some obstinance and back talk at the end when JTIII wanted him to continue to play defense and Starks was lazily walking up and down the court. JTIII was lighting into him at the end of the game too so I'm guessing this was a teaching point.

Wow. I turned off the game in disgust and thus missed this exchange.

Just got back from the game. Fans get an A for this game. Stayed into it despite being up most of the game.
Sims floated a bit early - I think due to his foul trouble. I don't understand why Lubick is so reluctant to shot when he is down low. There weren't a ton of shots but at least on where he passed it out to Otto for a mid range jumper. Thankfully Otto made it. Otto - is good. period. end of story. Jason remains really steady - we will miss him.
I don't get starks not getting any run. I guess it was a teaching moment - I don't even recall the end of the seaton hall game when he was dogging it.
I really don't understand the cheap fouls today either. I think things were so inconsistent because the bald guy was calling this SUPER tight. and the other guys were letting them play more. but the hand checks / arm bars etc...got a little ridiculous when we were up 20 with 3 to play.

Much better effort today from the guys, especially on the defensive end. Minus a short burst by Nova during the last 5 minutes of the first half, we yielded basically nothing short of free throws (courtesy of Eddie Ballgame and company) for the entire game. 28% FG defense is outstanding.
I thought our bigs all played well defensively and rebounded the ball, but they were extremely sloppy with taking care of the ball. Lubick had several really bad passes that were telegraphed. Sims still had some issues with catching the ball, and travel out by midcourt was just a disaster and unnecessary (hold the ball and tell a guard to come get it from you, Henry!)
I really hope the staff checked out the tape from Tuesday's game and realized that they never once tried to speed up Seton Hall utilizing a press, especially when we got down midway in the second half and just let Seton Hall bleed the clock on every possession. It sure looked like they learned from their mistake today, as they sent out the press early and often, which really rattled Nova and forced a fair amount of mistakes. Let's hope that they remember to stay with this strategy for every game moving forward, and at the very least do so until the other team proves it can beat the press consistently for baskets.
Not sure what has happened to Hollis' shot, but he looked extremely uncomfortable today both from the field and from the line. The missed open looks from the field were probably a blip on the radar, but his issues from the line have been going on for quite some time now.
Crowd was great in terms of attendance and provided energy in spurts when needed. Going to need a similar/more sustained effort on Monday. I hope a lot of out-of-towners who made the trip to DC this weekend were able to extend their stay to include the Monday night game.
A lot has been made of the Starks benching. I thought Otto played a great game, and he was especially solid with his mid-range jumpers. As for Starks: since the L'ville game (the last time I can recall Markel having a really excellent game), he is 26-70 FG (37.1%) and 13-44 from 3 (29.5%). His A/T ratio isn't bad during this stretch (23:19), but he's had several instances where he can't stay on the court because he can't avoid the two early fouls. To be honest, disciplinary reason or not, his play over the last two months doesn't justify having him start over Porter.

This is a very interesting development. I think we were all assuming that JTIII might replace Nate with Otto at some point this season. I had not considered that he would replace Starks with Otto.
Could this be a change that propels this team forward a bit?
Huhm. I kind of like it. We are a huge starting lineup with this change.

On Starks: he was high fiving and exchanging smiles with JT3 before game, so relationship looked fine if that is any indication. He also displayed great attitude during game. But he's not one of our five best players so I am good with him coming off bench. He and Trawick will be a nice set of guards next year if each continues to improve.

I agree - I love the lineup with clark, Hollis, Otto, Nate, and Sims. Very long and plays to our strength (defense).
That said, hard to imagine a guy goes from starting, getting 20 mins or so - to zero. Will be interesting to see how it develops.
Also - like Bowen getting a chance. I think he is a liability on D; but so athletic he can make things happen on offense. Granted that is based on his LIMITED action. So might not be fair eval.

Mr. Starks, I have a Mr. Sapp on line 1. He says you should really take the call.

Joey is absolutely right. Assuming that this was a disciplinary message primarily or exclusively, there's just no way that Markel sees his minutes diminish in any sizable way going forward. Even if he ends up coming off the bench (which is possible). As we all know from Otto, it doesn't matter if you start in terms of the affect on the game.
What's great about all of this is our flexibility. The whole key to being able to go big is that Nate has returned to being a truly viable option on both ends without giving much up. So, we can go big; we can go small; we can go with more of a penetrating guard with defense (Jabril) or more of a perimeter shooter and facilitator in Markel. The big lineup is great, but I don't think we want Jason being the primary ballhandler for extended periods. Not because he's not capable (which was a real fear going into the year) but rather because he's already playing lots of minutes, and that'll eat away from his effectiveness on both ends.
I think we just have to trust the staff with Bowen. They're obviously seeing something we aren't and hopefully whatever that is gets corrected because it seems clear he brings positive things to the table. JTIII has shown this year that he has no problem expanding his bench when there are credible options to go to, so if Bowen were an option, I would expect we'd see him getting a handful of meaningful minutes (like with Mikael), at least every so often. But it may just be a numbers crunch -- and one that will not be as bad next year (unless Hollis returns).

I'd be curious to see how the big lineup would do if a team decided to press. I'm not sure we wouldn't struggle. We need another solid ball handler. Otto is sufficient with the dribble for his size but I don't know if he and Jason could handle pressure like say a Louisville. I look for Starks to come out with fire the next chance he gets.

Others have mentioned this, but I was surprised at how physical/borderline dirty-play Nova was today. I remember watching them grab our players over and over, and at one point put a hand on Jason's chest so he couldn't get up after a slip and fall. Pretty rough.
I'm a bit surprised Nate didn't have a more complete stat line, because he was very active today, playing great D for the most part. At one point he made a mediocre pass that got picked off but came flying down the court to block a Nova shot, or so it looked to me. But he didn't get credit for a block, so the scorer must have ruled it a pass. Also, deflections (something Jason is also fantastic at) and tip-outs don't show up in a stat sheet.
All in all, a pretty balanced game. It's unusual when I leave a game and don't think, wow, player X was really great today - they all were, really. Hollis had an off game on O but played very good D and was again a good rebounder.
For once, we had a genuine home crowd - very impressive (and unusual) how the Booth was filled with Hoya fans. Props to the AD for promotion on this one. The students were actually there early.
I'm kind of shocked that Markel didn't come in the game even when Jason and Hollis had early foul trouble and we had a lead. From watching the postgame press conference, I think there is some unfinished business between him and JT3.
Who was the recruit-looking kid sitting behind the Hoya bench?

Directv did not carry the Hoya game here in Charleston, neither on the CBS channel or the alternate channel 729 which listed the game but which stated over and over again the game was blacked out in this area. You are correct. Channel 729 is available only to DirecTV customers with the ESPN Full Court package.--Admin
