College Basketball season is Back!
Tonight the first games of the year will take place!
And kicking off the college basketball season is a game that interests the Hoyas.
at 7pm St. John's will host William & Mary in the opening rounds of the 2K sports coaches vs. Cancer tournament.
Coach Lavin is not expected to be on the sidelines as he is still fighting prostate cancer.
For those of you who have been out of the loop. St.John's returns only 1 player from last years team a little used guard Malik Stith. St. John's brought in a highly regarded 9 person freshman class. Unfortunately for them 3 of those 9 failed to qualify. It will be interesting to see how a young undermanned team handles their first collegiate game.
So happy that basketball season is back. The Game will be at 7pm on ESPNU

I really hope that these pesky basketball games don't get in the way of the endless wailing and gnashing of teeth regarding conference realignment. That would be a shame.

I really hope that these pesky basketball games don't get in the way of the endless wailing and gnashing of teeth regarding conference realignment. That would be a shame. I expect the teeth-gnashing to transition quickly to this years "Hoyatalk Target of Scorn." The front-runners this year: Henry: If we don't rebound, blame the tallest guy on the floor. Also, he will probably look lost and/or confused. Hollis: He's expected to carry a bigger load this year, and we know he's thinking about jumping to the League. I expect to assume, without any support for the notion whatsoever, that he's being selfish this year. Jason: Also carrying a bigger load this year, and his defense and handle are serious question marks. Also, he smiles a lot on the court. But is it too much or not enough? Nate: As far as I'm concerned, if he doesn't haul off and punch at least two opposing players this year, he's not being tough enough. Markel: First unnecessary spin move at half court, and I'm writing off his college career entirely. One of the freshmen: Which one isn't really DI calliber according to Hoyatalk scouts? Moses: WHY COULDN'T HE BE HEALTHY?! I'm so ready for the season to start.

As long as none of our players suffer from self-internal jealousy, we'll be just fine.

Strummer, great list. However, you need to add:
John Thompson III: Why isn't our coach calling for a press? We need to press, press, and press some more. Then our defense will really kick it into high gear. We have athletic freshman and we need to press. Did I mention we need to press?

Trawick: First player to have an ambiguous tweet misinterpreted, by some of the paranoid self-entitled denizens of this board, as not being 110% supportive of Georgetown. Despite previously being a fan favorite known for his heart, he'll be forced to come prostrate himself before us to explain something that wasn't any of our business in the first place. May also have to agree to name his first born son "J.T." as a token gesture of just how deeply he loves this University.

We need SJU to return to the higher echelons of College Basketball. A marked resurgence by Providence would help too. Seton Hall??? I think they need a miracle.
Regardless, the Big East needs the Basketball schools to have good years. Especially the one in DC!!

St. John's will lose this and a lot of games this year. Cannot score besides off of turnovers.

Swhoya, another prediction for this season: before long, somebody on Hoya Talk will post a completely unsubstantiated rumor about players being unhappy or internal dissension among the ranks, which will then lead to another unsubstantiated response suggested the transfer of one of the freshman - a post which will promptly be edited or deleted by the moderators.

Luckily for our RPI St. John's put it together in the second half and won 74-59.

Just watched an ESPNU panel of so called basketball experts which included Bilas and Elmo and was surprized how little respect they gave to the Hoyas making a possible impact in the BE this year. I know as Hoya fans we may be over valueing the Hoya freshmen class, but these guys while dropping praise on most everyone else's freshmen class don't say anything about Jabrill, Otto or Tyler all top 100 recruits. This should be motivation to the players and the coaching staff.

I think the BE coach's poll picked us 10th. Until proven otherwise, I think that is about the right spot.
Completely unproven PG
A starting C with no history of sustained production
Suspect defense the last few years
Suspect rebounding the last few years
We lost our 2 most productive offensive weapons. We lost our only proven post player.
A 4-year trailing history of early, disappointing outs in the NCAA tournament
To be honest, and very understandably, we have much to prove before the pundits jump on the Hoya bandwagon. The introduction of 5 freshmen are not enough to overcome these significant issues. We have a very solid class, but pundits are not believing yet that we are bringing in a Greg Monroe or Andre Drummond or Kyrie Irving or Austin Rivers who will make an immediate impact.
I like being ranked 10th and disrespected going in because, especially for a young team, it is always better to go in with lower expectations to keep the pressure off and motivate the team.
That said, I would struggle to pick us any higher than the coach's poll did at this point. Not saying in can't be done, but we have lots to prove.

Ranch is talking great sense,as usual. I love where we are - under the radar and loaded - of course, freshman, - but if we get a couple of Nates out of the deal, it will help. I would like to see III really stress D - to the point that he will do wholesale substitutions when the first team needs a blow. Play the PO when we are on offense - keep the other team on D as long as you can then when the other team is on O play 'em so hard and tight that they have to expend a lot of energy getting some points. When we get tired switch 'em out. I really think we can go to a 10 man rotation. Most teams are only around 7-8. They will be more tired at the end. It'll help us this year. And PRESS PRESS PRESS - full court if possibel.

Fortunately the pundits and experts will take a back seat to the results beginning Saturday, and the team will have every opportunity to prove itself. Can't say where the wild ride will go this season, but it should at least be entertaining. Hopefully as a fan base we will exercise patience and restraint this year, especially early on, and give this very young group a chance to develop and grow into a team.

Are you kidding, Frazier? The Hoya fan base is entitled to be impatient and unrestrained at all times. In fact, I heard Otto had a turnover against James Madison. Buckle up, young man, or you're toast.
