Thompson is full of BS on this. We all have sinned/make mistakes--but when you put yourself and your need/desire for personal glory ahead of well being of others--specifically children being raped by a man you worked with--and worry about how the rapist will be dealt with should it get out--then all respect/good deeds take a significant backseat to the heinous act and self serving "bad". Lying about something like this and hiding it when you could've done something and stood up and made a huge stand and helped save/prevent this from happening to others, well I'd say Joe Pa is getting what he deserved in terms of discussion. He personally said he would address this--NEVER did--and last time I checked his mouth still worked--specifically when he'd come out to address the throngs of supporters, tell the PSU administration how they should handle his job status, etc.....so.....he had enough time at "end" to say something--didn't and now his family is behaving in same manner--total focus on their part--Joe Paterno's legacy--not the tragedy or vicitims that suffered due to their "hero". clearly you didn't read what he said.

If you are a public figure you should probably just keep your mouth shut for the time being about Paterno. Regardless of what you are saying. There is just no good that can come of it.

Read it word for word--just typical John Thompson BS. This is a guy who wants to throw fans under bus for looking at coaches as "gods" but he sure as hell loved being treated like one or behaving like a dictator like the rest of them. DFW's comments are laughable about "not having time at the end". That's a copout.

I'm not going to get into an shouting match with RDF for what is my opinion. A dead man cannot defend himself in the court of public opinion.
There is a lot of CYA activity going on at Penn State, and a fair amount of it focuses attention on Paterno rather than deal with systemic issues within PSU's administration.

He did have time in the end - the guy pathetically hid behind every possible excuse up to his last breath. To top it off, he chose to blatantly lie to Sally Jenkins in his only interview about the matter. He may have had a high graduation rate, but honestly who gives a crap about that in light of what's happened? In his final years and months, he was unmasked as a truly bad guy.
BTW, here's the lead to Jenkins' column from last week, in stark contrast to her embarrassingly misguided column after her interview:
"Joe Paterno was a liar, there’s no doubt about that now."

Yo guru, neither you nor Sally can prove that in a court of law, for whatever its worth.

Mr. Paterno, like each of us, was a flawed human. He will face, or already has faced, the only judgment that matters.
All the rest, from everywhere else, is noise.

A good first step as well as a good reminder of why statues should not go up until history has had its chance to take the long view.

It looks like removing the statue was part of the deal reached with the NCAA, as we will know what the NCAA is going to do tomorrow: espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/53582/ncaa-to-announce-psu-penalties-mondayLooks like the fix is in, no due process, just cut a deal, shame on you Rodney and shame on the NCAA.. The liars at Ohio State and USC got to present their cases, but the chicken president of Happy Valley crawled in a whole and sucked his thumb.

I wonder if they will also refund the seat licenses for this year to the season ticket holders

There's a high importance concern...
More importantly, how will the Stepford fans fill their Saturday's this fall? What is life without a tailgate party in the middle of nowhere?

It will interesting to see if all these news outlets (or the source they are talking to) are using "unprecedented" correctly. If they are that means death penalty out (which has been reported), and just taking schollies and bowls is pretty precedented. Maybe they actually did something creative and figured out a way to actual do something useful with the penalties.

If it is not the death penalty, then there might not be much effect. Bowl money is nothing if the G1G doesn't boot them out because their revenue stays the same under contract. The loss of scholiast isn't really that big because the alumnus will just reprogram their scholarship money to "needs based athletes" and they can get most of players covered.
If the B1G boots them out, them when the TV sanctions go away, NBC will be right there with a Norte Dame deal.

I'm pretty sure Penn State did present its case - it's called the Freeh Report and it's pretty damning.
