This is horrible: www.attorneygeneral.gov/press.aspx?id=6270It sounds like everyone from the President to the AD to Joe Paterno knew about Sandusky molesting a 10 year old in PSU locker rooms and no one said or did anything about it. Everyone should be fired. What a pathetic response by PSU. And, I have to say, this really changes the way I feel about Joe Paterno, someone who, as an outsider to PSU football, I thought was a football version of John Thompson, in that he cared about winning, but he cared just as much, if not more, about doing things the right way and in his players getting an education. Just pathetic that he knew about this and did nothing.

I always waited for the day Penn State would get busted for something but not like this.

Further reports make it pretty clear that JoePa at least reported the assault to the AD, but still. It seems like just doing the minimum here isn't enough. The AD doesn't do anything? Go to the police.

Go to the police. As a Penn State fan (both my parents went there and I lived in PA until sixth grade), I'm pretty disappointed. And like you, I always thought Paterno did it more the right way than most. He did report it, Sandusky was already retired (or at least I think so), and I get that it'd be hard to make sure you turned your friend of thirty years into the police, especially if you had reported it once already (someone was giving you a mental out). Still, it's not sexual harassment or cheating or something like that. It's sexual abuse of a child. There's a line, and that's it, isn't it? Unless he was lied to (it's been reported, Joe, and the police are not pursuing...), there's not a lot here to like even if he reported it to the AD.

Sandusky had left the program in 1999. According to the NY Times: "According to the attorney general’s office, Paterno alerted the athletic director, Tim Curley, about a 2002 incident in which a graduate assistant for the team said he saw Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in the shower at Lasch Football Building on the Penn State campus. The graduate student said he went to Paterno’s home the next day and described what he had seen. Paterno, in turn, told [athletic director] Curley... But [Curley] did not alert law enforcement, as required by state law, Kelly said." www.nytimes.com/2011/11/06/sports/ncaafootball/former-coach-at-penn-state-is-charged-with-abuse.html

shellshock is how I would describe the reaction of the Penn St fans around my office. They are not even thinking about Nebraska which literally had the ball rammed down their throat Saturday by Northwestern in the 4th quarter.

I honestly don't see any way that JoePA can come away from this unscathed. Even if the AG grants him some kind of immunity in exchange for his testimony, it's not going to help him in the court of public opinion.

They're not alleging sexual abuse. They're alleging rape.

If he did these things, and I surely don't know, there is not a hot enough circle in Hell for him.

Sick and however much pain that those youngsters had to endure and be haunted with, just hope it returns to all of the negligent PSU administrators, coaches, etc...times infinity. Paterno trying to dismiss himself from this is disgusting. He has a responsibility as a person and this wasn't an internal matter--it's a disgusting low life criminal act. Paterno will be gone soon enough (and I'm not talking from coaching) so punishment won't matter to him, but rest of them--hope they get punished in a manner that makes them wish they never were born.

Two things on this:
1. Colleges keep on getting pilloried for having their own punishment system outside the traditional justice system (honor courts, etc). This has often received criticism by feminist groups, who allege that, for sexual assault cases, punishment and the determination of guilt or innocence are tilted heavily towards the attacker. But colleges keep on doing it.
Upon first glimpse - as there's a lot we don't know yet - this may be another case where the ivory tower preferred to handle things internally, and you don't go to the cops because you *never* go to the cops. Colleges tend to justify this by the claim that universities are a learning environment and different from the real world (you may guess that I don't buy into this, and you'd be right - I'm just thinking of an explanation for the actions of Paterno).
2. What is more interesting to me is that there was apparently a point where Sandusky was still allowed onto campus but wasn't allowed contact with kids. The logic and reasoning behind that decision, to me, seems to be the key to a lot of decisions re: culpability.

Prior to a friend bringing up this subject with me, I had noticed the headlines but had not read the stories. Sad to report, I just did. Pretty unbelievable. Add to that the reporting to Paterno, the AD and the 3rd guy... and no follow through, sounds just like the Catholic Bishops who chose to look the other way ... for decades.
The incidents are bad enough, but for others in positions of authority to "drop the ball"? fail to pursue? cover up? ... for what? to protect Penn State's reputation? -- at the expense of more child victims? That is disgraceful.

That is disgraceful. I've always respected Penn State's program but never liked Paterno or his phony "I'm not in this for record.." bit where he and Bowden waged a "geeze off" to see who can stay the longest. After reading this stuff--I think Paterno should go to Prison with rest of the people who knew and didn't do a thing to protect the victims. It's one thing if you have no idea something is going on--another to act like it's something that should just go away.

No, Sandusky was merely told to stop bringing kids onto campus, and when he didn't stop, even then the University did nothing. What is the ratio of KNOWN pedophiles in the PSU population over the last 50 years? Maybe 5 in a million.
What is the ratio of KNOWN pedophiles in the American priest population over the last 50 years? Maybe 1 in 50.
So how many more incidents were covered up by the church than were by PSU?
Joe has given millions to the Catholic church for youth over the years.
