There are two things I find really strange about this. First, ESPN, for not a lot of money, steal the BE from NBC and effectively pushing a competitor out of the way. NBC, Fox, and CBS are all gearing up to challenge ESPN as THE sports network. Maybe ESPN would rather have the three of them waste time and money battling it out, but to me, for 30mil a year to eliminate a top competitor is a prime opportunity. Second, why is NBC offering so little? Of course they dont want to way over pay, but you have a league that is falling apart. Its down to the scraps. As a TV network you need to be a partner and support your properties. They should be offering more so that these programs can grow and get better. There is nothing keeping UConn and Cincy in the league and there is too little money to help other teams take the step up in level. This amount of money leaves them in a no mans land somewhere between BCS and non-BCS and we all know its easier to drop from BCS than it is to get to the top.

It is a great point jgalt, the damage done by a TV partner offering the lowest possible amount is often overlooked. I hope there are incentives based on ratings or NBC is going to invest behind the product with heavy promotion and attractive production. This asset is damaged and the only way to make it better is by investing, not by continuing to help it deteriorate. It is a very short-sighted strategy considering I do not believe another property will be on the market any time soon.

ESPN has agreed to match NBC's offer for the Big East, agreeing to pay more than $20M annually for six years. bddy.me/Xo5eVq

That sounds like bad news for the football schools and NBC. NBC doesn't get the content it needs and the football schools don't get the money or exposure they're hoping for. Any chance NBC gets back in on the B7 bidding?

From ajerseyguyQUOTE:After working on a multi-year package with NBC Sports Network for football and basketball which will pay between $20 and 25 million per year, the Big East on Thursday also had to ponder a matching offer from ESPN, which is the current primary broadcaster holder for football and basketball for the conference.
After taking a week to finalize its strategy, ESPN on Thursday . ESPN ”matched’ the offer, but whether the criteria of matching includes promotion and programming slots equal to what NBC is offering remains unsettled.
Although the multi-year offer (6 or 7 years) from NBC will bring the Big East schools only between $20 and 23 million annually, the league was counting on prime time exposure on NBC and its cable outlets as well as additional exposure on other networks to carry them through the transition as smaller, but perhaps more unified conference in football and basketball.

Seems like ESPN is paying to stop any competition. Yep. Knew his would happen when it was released last week how little NBC was offering. Really dumb on NBC's part. Should have offered much more (in the $30 mil range) initially. ESPN wouldnt have been as quick to match. There are very few properties left for NBC and they need traditional programming to go with the more niche sports they have. Not because of the ratings but because of credibility. To most its still a hunting channel that also has the Tour de France and NHL. Its basically in the same spot that ESPN was in when they first started, showing third rate sports. The problem for NBC is that all the big properties are tied up with recent contracts. Even if they were going to pony up the money they need to to be a player, they dont have anything to buy. Even worse is that Fox is now trying to challenge ESPN. And because Fox already has connections with the Pac12 and MLB (in addition to NFL which NBC has also) they are in a better spot to cross promote their new channel (and the new cbb stuff). Im not sure what their contract is with MLB but if they can show MLB games on their new channel, that big blow to NBCsportsnet.

So, no longer really dumb on NBC's part necessarily. If they knew that ESPN had a track record of tampering with other conferences to lure third-rate football programs into their pride and joy, the ACC, it makes more sense to write the terms of the contract in a favorable manner, keep the price low, so they can step in and re-claim the (weakened) conference after ESPN/ACC has pillaged its choice of Uconn and/or Cincy and dumped them back on the market. The glorified C-USA Plus will still be sitting there to be picked up by NBC at a heavily discounted price, rather than suffering the ignominy of having their conference eviscerated in public by a rival.

espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/9125952/tulsa-golden-hurricane-formally-accept-invitation-old-big-east-conferenceSo glad we got out of the soon to be named conference. Tulsa, Tulane, East Carolina, Central Florida, SMU, Houston, Memphis, Temple, South Florida, Uconn, and Cincinnati. That would have been a joke of a conference for basketball and will only get worse when Connecticut bails.
