Maybe the best argument it just to have another period (15 minutes? 10 minutes like Costas suggested) and see who's ahead at the end of that? And so on... I tend to agree with this but it may need to negotiated in the TV contracts over commercial time and whether networks would pay "extra" for extra time games. Other sports seem to get along with it so it shouldn't be a big deal, but this is the NFL after all, and they make more TV money in one week of regular season games than the NCAA makes in a year. Basketball works fine with a 5 min OT--a 10 min period in football would allow for at least one series per team. I hate to stroke the egos of the hockey fans on this board, but hockey has it right. Do what you want in the regular season. You don't want to be playing 80 games with play-forever-overtime rules so it's great to make it easier to score, and oh, by the way, make it really exciting when you alter the game (not this start on the 25 crap. Yawn). But when it's the playoffs, just keep playing. +1. The college overtime is abhorrent because it changes the game you are playing. No kick return, no deep ball, it completely changes the game. The NFL "fixed" an unbroken system -- only 52% of teams that won the toss won the game -- simply because people can not be bothered to learn and think. It's like everything else out there -- but even though I can verify my opinion easily as true or false, I won't! People always said that the kicking team never got a chance. But they did. IT'S CALLED DEFENSE!

Romeo Crennel > Mike Tomlin & Dick LeBeau kc lost to denver the first time they played them. i imagine that pittsburgh would have had a much better showing if they saw denver earlier this season (like kc did). if i were tomlin, i would have made ike taylor walk back to pittsburgh. he couldn't cover a chair yesterday.

so the nfl makes up all these new playoff OT rules because they didn't want a coin flip to decide a playoff game. oops. guess that didn't work out too well. I really don't understand the rule at all. I am totally confused as well Boz. I was watching the game and some guy went on and on about a million different OT possibilities but the one thing I DID hear was -- "to ensure each team gets a possession". Next thing, on the very first play, Denver hits an 80 yd TD and the game is over! OK, so in the long history of OT, that was what I would have expected. Somebody scores, it's over. Until I heard that harrange about all these new rules and variations of rules and so on. Now I am totally confused. Since 1958, Colts beat NY Giants in OT for NFL Championship -- system seemed to work just fine. This is like New Coke. Why? Get the marketing guys OUT OF THE GAME!

It's pretty easy - if the team receiving the kickoff scores a FG on their first possession, the other team gets a possession to match or beat it.
Otherwise it's sudden death.

The Steelers had almost a full season of game film to digest. It doesn't matter that they didn't play Denver twice. Kansas City handed the defensive gameplan to Pittsburgh on a silver platter. For some reason, they chose to ignore it.

People always said that the kicking team never got a chance. But they did. IT'S CALLED DEFENSE! Such a tired, overused argument. It's as if MLB decided to change the extra innings format and if the road team scores in the top of the 10th, they win the game.

[/quote] Well, that's not completely comparable. Because unlike in football, in baseball, you don't get runners on second and third the next half inning if you go 1-2-3 on defense. And that's why the 52% number actually happened -- because if you kick off and stop a team on D you have a short field to a FG of your own. But, that said, you have a point, which is why I favor and always have favored just playing 10 or 15 more minutes.

The simple fact is that Tebow and Thomas made a great play, the Pittsburgh defenders did not. When you think about it, the new rules did not change the outcome of the game. For the "old school" purists, the result would have been the same - Denver wins. Wait until or if the new rules affect an outcome. Anything else is sour grapes, pure and simple.

Waiting until the outcome does change would make it more likely it is sour grapes., doesn't it? Actually commenting now proves there's no sour grapes.
Your comment really makes no sense.

The new rules had no impact whatsoever on the outcome of the game. The result would have been the same. If someone expresses a dislike for the process when it did not cause the result, it seems likely they are attempting to rationalize or explain away a loss by their team. You have to question whether opinions would be different if the Steelers won.

You have to question whether opinions would be different if the Steelers won. No, that doesn't make any sense. We know it doesn't change the outcome. Disregarding the fact that neither KC nor I are Steelers fans, even if we were, there's no motivation to complain, because our complaints, even if honored, wouldn't have changed the game. So, it's not sour grapes. Sour grapes would be IF it had changed the game. My complaint is with the system as provided, not with the result. This is more or less proved by the fact that result would not have changed under what I was saying. I beginning to wonder if you know what sour grapes means.

Yes, that was a great game. Still can't believe the niners almost lost that game with the Saints coughing the ball up as much as they did.
Pats offense seems to be humming along, doncha think?

Let's hope we do not hear any more about TT or T----Time until the playoffs are over Tim Tebow is a role model for young people but Bill Belichick schooled him last night. There is a huge difference between being a good option quarterback and being an elite NFL quarterback like Brady.

That call on Umenyiora was criminally bad. This game should be over already. Just unbelivably bad.
