With the rage that is being directed towards the staff in re: to Semaj Christon not getting a commitable offer, I am curious about how people would like to see the remaining scholarships available shake out in the next two years. As I understand it, we've got 10 locked up for two years (note: I think the Bolden commit sticks).
Ten in: Porter, Trawick, Hopkins, Adams, Whittington, Lubick, Bowen, Ayegba, Starks, Bolden.
A lot of nice Big East role players, no Big East stars. Time to hit a home run. In my book, I don't think we should take a commit from anyone until the following six are off the table.
1.) Kyle Anderson
2.) Nerlens Noel
3.) T.J. Warren
4.) Devonta Pollard
5.) Troy Williams
6.) Nate Britt
I think if any of those six want to commit, they can do it tomorrow. No one else.

How do you know Porter isn't a star? Or Starks? Or Whittington for that matter? All three of those guys have a ton of ability. I think you're being presumptuous with a bunch of freshmen and sophomores, who haven't proven one way or the other what they're capable of.

Well, I actually do think its fair to say that a sophomore who earned little to no playing time during his freshman year probably won't end up being a star. A solid, competent, and effective role player? Sure. Star? I doubt it.
As far as the freshmen go, you're right. Who knows? Its beside the point though, as one of them becoming a star shouldn't prevent us from trying to land another high-impact player.
If I had to pick 3 in an ideal world: Anderson, Noel, Britt.
I would be thrilled to lock up either Pollard or Warren too, but just feel like we have a lot of 3/4 depth at the moment.

In response to daytonahoya, I think you make a fair point. Just a gut feeling from what I have seen in person, which admittedly is a limited sample.

Charles Smith went two years with little-no playing time, and became the best guard in the Big East. Starks got little to no playing time because he was playing behind Chris Wright, not because he doesn't have talent. I could come up with 10-15 examples of guys who became great players after not playing one or two seasons

was going to post this in Christon thread, but how do we know for sure that he didn't get one? because he hasn't committed yet?
I very much appreciate the recruiting info provided by TP, allen, RDF, deacon, krukster, kg and others, but unless I missed something, we only have a lot of circumstantial evidence, right?
I realize there is a large element of tea reading in these things as well, and that folks like those I mentioned above are far better at it than I am. And of course, the staff and most likely the player won't say anything. But it seems like people are saying if he had gotten one, he would have committed already. Is that for certain?
But if he in fact does not have the firm offer, and even if we get Kyle and then perhaps some fantasy combo of Noel (I think we have to have a true C at some point) and Warren/Williams, the we still have one true PG, correct? I realize Kyle, if we get him, will do a lot of handling and distributing for us, but is the staff really putting themselves in a position to have only one true PG?

My only point is that, if he commits, the roster will seem to be heavy with Big East project/role players (with high ceilings for sure) and lacking in the more predictably, productive 5-star prospects that tend to carry teams deep into the tournament these days.

While your points are valid and I don't entirely disagree daytona, I think its very fair to be skeptical of Starks becoming a star. While he did play behind Chris Wright, his minutes did not increase at all, even with Wright going down to injury. When Starks did play, he made virtually no impact. He could certainly become a good, solid point guard for us, but I do have trouble saying that he could be a star. Unfortunately, we haven't yet seen flashes. Hopefully, he proves me wrong. I'd be thrilled, but right now, I just don't think we'll be seeing Markel on the front pages of espn.com or si.com during his career. We're talking bonafide star here.

Fair point. I also wonder, if he doesn't have one and we don't get him, who else is a PG besides Markel (who all of us, I'm sure, would love to break out)? If Britt is the target (not say he is/isn't or that he should/not be), isn't that a pretty big gap between primary ball handlers? |

When Britt is a Freshman Starks would be a senior. So Britt learns behind Starks for a year then takes over the reigns from Starks in his sophomore year. Same thing that is happening with starks.

Porter will be a star in college.
Whittington has the potential as do Trawick and Markel.

Umm, just about every team in the final four this year didn't win with five star recruits. Derrick Williams from Zona was an after thought (although not in FF, was a top two pick). No one from Butler was a marquee recruit. Uconn had some solid recruits but no one anticipated Lamb being that caliber of player. VCU clearly didn't have any marquee recruits. UK was the one exception to your earlier comment with two top recruits in Jones & Knight.
I think we are finally building a legit roster from top to bottom with three to four year talent which is how the mid majors have been doing it and I think is how you can compete for titles with maybe one key big recruit like a Jones, Irving, etc. to get you over the hump, not to build around.

Guys who can do things the program lacks or are significant players who are self motivated. No more of the do what's asked and that's it. It's about time to get someone in the backcourt who will not treat defense as if it's an optional thing that you do when stage is bright or when game is close.

Nobody is raging that Christon doesn't have an offer-at least I can speak for myself and a few people I know posting--but can tell you we're tired of "Let's wait........." and last year was a rare year where Hoyas landed very high quality players in Spring--that doesn't happen very often. You keep going the "wait and see" route and you end up with depleted roster due to transfers, and always hoping that 2 years from now--you might be able to contend if so and so develops......... If a kid is willing to work, possesses talent, and wants to come-and you would take him if Player X says no--then take him. Always believed that players who want to be in your program and believe in what you are doing will achieve more then guys who go for other reasons (winning now, putting guys in pros, stay close to home so family can see me--every game is on tv--they can see you play anywhere, etc...). The Jeff Green/Hibbert group is prime example and I'm already on record as eating crow for getting upset over "losing" Christmas and Johnson last year--because everything about this current group has me excited to see them play. Understand waiting for guys you invest time in like Anderson--but also understand that any team who wins a title has more then 1 player at each position---and if you don't or a guy is turned off by competition--what will happen when it's time to face tough competition? |

You make some great points RDF. The only thing we all seem to be overlooking though is this: maybe the staff is withholding an offer for reasons other than Kyle. Be it academics, ability, fit, we have no idea why we possibly haven't given a commitable offer. While this is generating some interesting discussion and debate, maybe we should all refrain from jumping down the staff's and each others' throats for waiting or not-waiting for certain reasons. Lets just have faith in III and company, who have been fantastic on the trail lately.
Anyways, back to the topic at hand: who of those highly rated recruits do you want in a Hoya uniform in a perfect world?

not to mention the fact that what none of us have seen semaj play other than highlight tapes online? c'mon seems like staff is well aware of what putting all their eggs in one basket with a player has done. The net has been cast WAY wider this year than in years past and i think its a direct result of missing out on the players they seemingly felt good about landing

Our transfers have recently been of the late stretch offer type: Nikita, Omar, Benimon, Sanford versus guys we signed as early targets. Maybe a lesson has been learned from that as GW & Porter were our late gets and neither of them seems to fit the desperation get that the others were to fill out a roster.

Agree with Daytona in that down the line we may have 1 or more 1st team all BE performers. porter has unlimited upside, jabril could develop into a stud, not enough is known about Starks. that said, at a minimum, we should wait until September 20th before we sign another ballhandler.

allow me to clarify. from the little i saw of starks last year, he has a lot of improving to do before he becomes a star caliber player. that being said, many posters on this board who may have more exposure to markel than i believe he has a high ceiling. Therefore, I don't know enough about him to formulate a definitive opinion, but from what I hear, he has ton of potential and therefore could be a star.
from what I know about jabril, the kid is already a stud...and he he develops a consistant outside....the kid will be a star.
