Maryland's program is known for Gary Williams outspoken criticism of everything not UM or ACC and a terrible fanbase that routinely chants personal slurs against opposing players that have nothing to do with game being played.
But now we can add groveling to the NCAA to that list, this from the Wash Post:
"Maryland's media relations staff dispersed an e-mail yesterday touting the Terps' NCAA tournament credentials. Included were quotes from national media members, including Sports Illustrated writer Seth Davis, who said, "I simply cannot imagine the ACC getting only four teams into the NCAA tournament."
A team that has lost three in a row down the stretch with an identical record as the Hoyas and a losing conference record does not deserve any consideration.

Would you expect anything less from 'ol Gary? First Paul Hewitt of GTech, and now Gary? If they are the "best" conference in America, why would their teams have to resort to begging in order to get into the tourney?
Are JT3 and Beilein doing this? I would think there's a slim chance in hell that they are.
We just continue to outclass the ACC in every way, shape and form. Without help from ESPN.

The ACC will get the benefit of the doubt...
They've had 2 teams within the past 6 seasons to finish the regular season with unflattering records and then go on to the final four...
North Carolina in 2000...and Tech in 2004...
If you throw in a struggling Maryland squad from 2001, that would be 3...but that squad was able to 'right the ship' just before the ACC tourney...

Unflattering? Wasn't GTech a 3 seed last year? Sounds pretty good to me.

9-7. But they had an RPI of 16.

Wasn't sure what their conference record was, but I did know they had a decent seed...

23-9 overall (after the ACC tournament). Their resume included a win at (eventual champion) Connecticut.

It's really too bad the Twerps beat Duke twice, as that's really all they have going for them. Take those two games out of the equation, and they are 14-11, 5-9, with absolutely no basis whatsoever for an NCAA bid.

GTech was a 3 seed...they were T-3 in the ACC which was ranked #1 in the country.

The best thing to come out of this:
Michael Wilbon will be going on a hunger strike in protest of the NCAA's snub of Maryland...
The Washington Post will refuse to cover the NCAA tournament and just focus on the arrival of new Redskins WR David "another bad creation" Patten...
Maryland students will riot on selection Sunday, eventually marching on the White House, before the Dept of Homeland Security "disperses" the crowd through the judicious use of air support...

Actually, Wilbon and Kornheiser both think that Maryland should be left out at this point, barring a win over UNC (as of yesterday on TK's show, anyway). They differ from a number of the terp-centric broadcasters around here in that regard, though.
And the big news is not Patten but the Coles-Moss trade, in which the 'Skins are eating more cap money because Coles didn't like Gibbs' system.

Alternatively if they'd beaten Clemson or NC State twice they'd be a much stronger candidate for a bid. The fact is, they did beat Duke twice.

If they can keep May off the glass, they can beat a McCant-less Heels squad... Don't want to see them beat the Heels, but I would like to see them amongst the 64...

Maryland does not belong in the tournament. Maryland has only two impressive wins all year. Both against Duke, other than that they stink. The top 3 teams should go to the NCAA tournament and thats it from the ACC. If we are talking reality here, Maryland would have to win the ACC tournament to be in the NCAA's. If we are talking NCAA selection committee and its bias towards the ACC,all Maryland has to do is win against Clemson. If we are talking Lenardi talk, then Maryland is already in. N.C. state should go before Maryland because they swept Maryland twice and are playing better basketball down the stretch.
I personally think GW should go, but they won't

Hopefully a 3rd loss to Clemson sends MD down to the NIT.

That's about as easy as keeping Refrigerator Perry away from the buffet line. May DOMINATED Shelden Williams. DOMINATED. What's MD going to do, box him out with 3 people? May will eat Nik Caney-Medley for lunch and the combo of Ibekwe and Garrison for a delicious after-dinner snack. In the last 4 games with McCants out, these are Mays #'s: 12/14 - Nc St. 22/11 - MARYLAND 31/11 - Florida St. 26/23 - Duke But, you know, if John Gilchrist goes for 30-10-15, Maryland could win too... Maryland has absolutely no business being in the tournament. If they make it over some deserving team, there should be an investigation.

Maryland has absolutely no business being in the tournament. If they make it over some deserving team, there should be an investigation. Let's not be all bent outta shape because it's Maryland... The NCAA committee has been doing this for years...leaving deserving teams out of the tourney...rigging certain brackets to be significantly tougher than others or so certain teams will be knocked out early... As much as we'd like to think this comes down to sportsmanship and 'teams deserving to go to the tourney', this is about money... Mid-majors will be left out, so more big conference teams can be invited...gotta keep that money amongst the Big Boys...

If you can't do better tha :500 in your own conference, you don't deserve to go to the NCAA tournament. If they win the ACC tourney - they get the automatic. But if you have an entire season to prove yourself, and lose half your conference games or more... you had your chance already. Go home. (and After the NIT) Retool for next season.
Same thing applies to us.

FOr the record I don't think MD deserves to make the dance. However, I'm not sure I agree at all with the blanket statements that teams that aren't .500 or better shouldn't get a shot.
GT was 9-7 in the ACC and went to the final game last year. Are you telling me one more loss and they shouldn't have made it in.
If you can win games in the dance you deserve to get in.
MD has a very inconsistent record this year, but the committee probably says: If they can beat Duke twice they can win a game or two in the dance.
Just my $.02
