I'd love to know how Utah State gets their large, loud student section to chant everything in unison so often... seriously, it's impressive.

So impressed with the Utah St. student section. The team looks good too. Their cheerleaders could be the best in the NCAA.

Assuming Utah State keeps rolling, I think that could end up being a very good win for us at the end of the year. Disagree. They're 0-2 against teams with an RPI under 100. Half their wins are against teams with an RPI between 100-200 and the other half are against teams with an RPI between 200-300. They only have one test the rest of the season, against St. Mary's. With their schedule, even with a 27-3 record, I wouldn't give them an at-large bid.

That's not exactly their fault. They got screwed against BYU, and no one can be reasonably expected to beat us.
They haven't lost any of the games they're supposed to win. Lot's of teams on their schedule are down this year compared to last year and past years: Utah, Nevada, Northeastern, Long Beach, Western Michigan have all been better in the past than they were this year.

Their staff knew what the conference toughness was going to be ahead of time. If you're in a spot where you think you've got a good chance of dominating your league and you know the rest of the conference is going to be comprised of bottom of the barrel teams, you get on the phone and aggressively try to schedule as many top tier opponents ooc that you can. If they lose to St. Mary's and don't win their conference tournament, the committee is going to look at their season and see that they have zero quality wins and beat a bunch of high school varsity teams.

I think it's a pretty big and possibly unfair assumption that you know how tough your conference will be ahead of time. No one knew exactly how hard the BE would be this year or how bad the ACC would be. Also they as a rule refuse to play guarantee games( we were a huge exception) and since no highly rated teams agree to play them home and home they don't get the match ups you're suggesting they need to schedule. Second of all just because a team hasn't beaten that many quality teams doesn't mean they're not a good team. Ken pom has them rated at 31 using tempo free stats and adjusting for competition. They clearly do somethings very well. The team passes the eye test if you watch them. Only 5 of their 21 wins have been by single digits. Only 2 wins came down to a 1 possession game. They're not scrapping by bad competition. They're winning going away for the most part. Plus there are plenty of teams who have faced bad teams and lost, you have to give them credit for not taking a night off and continuing to win.

Not saying they're not a good team. But I'd love to be able to play 2 or 3 games against quality competition and then spend the rest of the season kicking the crap out of sub 200 RPI teams. But when you lose those quality games, your resume doesn't exactly look appealing.

When I said "assuming Utah State keeps rolling" I meant maybe one more loss, and winning their league tournament. I meant it in a way that they'll be a tournament team, and we'd be one of only two or three teams with a win over them. I'm not by any means saying they have the most impressive resume out there.

Screaming,
I understand where you're coming from but you're misinformed. For years, no major conference team would do a home and home with the Aggies, because that's a good team and there's nothing to gain. That being said, Utah State still doesn't have the name of a Gonzaga, where they can just schedule a bunch of giants before they dominate their conference.
So Stew Morrill tried to make some concessions this year. He offered a one-for-one with a number of teams, playing them, starting this year, at their place, and then playing the return game in Salt Lake City at EnergySolutions Arena where the Jazz play. Nobody bit. Again, nothing in it for the big conference teams.
I know for a fact that he had St. John's down for a 2-1, and they pulled out. I know that he had Rutgers, and they pulled out. He tried Michigan State, and they wouldn't do it, either. Again, Utah State is five years removed from the Big West Conference and still doesn't have the sexy name that a Gonzaga or Butler has.
Stew Morrill's been barbecued in the past for playing a soft schedule. This year isn't his fault. The WAC was very good last year. It sucks eggs this season. It's not easy scheduling teams who don't want anything to do with the Spectrum. As the old saying goes, it takes two to tango.
That being said, even if that team doesn't win the WAC, if they finish 30-3, no way the NCAA leaves them out.

On another note - it is time for DePaul to start earning their Big East chops. Tonight would be a very nice beginning.

Well, Utah St is almost certainly going to make the NCAA either way. They made it last year despite several bad losses and really only one good win. Kenpom type numbers help their case a lot.
It is an interesting debate, though. Assuming they don't win their conference tournament and they lose to St. Mary's, they could very well end up with ZERO quality wins, but only one bad loss and something like 30 wins overall.
