so it's true this kid is old for his class (real old)? When Gonzaga's 6-foot-1 guard Nate Britt charged into the lane against DeMatha's 6-foot-8 Mikael Hopkins and scored on a slick spin move, Purple Eagles' fans boasted, "He's a sophomore. He's a sophomore." So DeMatha fans answered, "He's 18. He's 18." washingtonexaminer.com/sports/2011/02/dematha-tops-gonzaga#ixzz1FT2A8I6n

I don't know if he's 18, but I've always heard that him and Jenkins are two years older than their classmates.

Some states have an age limit on kids playing sports for exactly this reason, but the private schools can usually do whatever they want. Sad for the kids.

article earlier said they were intentionally left back a year in middle school. Does it matter?

article earlier said they were intentionally left back a year in middle school. Does it matter? I think age matters a lot in terms of projection. If a player is 16 and dominating 18 year olds, that's not only more impressive but he has two more year to develop his skills. I think that is overall more relevant to a pro evaluation. Since college gets the kid anywhere from 17 -21 to about 20 - 24, there are some benefits to the college to them actually being older. (They still may have less development). I mean, Roy and Jeff could still be Hoyas right now! (though obviously 8/hrs a day on their job has helped). I feel like the general rule of thumb is that physical peak is somewhere around 27 and that players improve significantly until about 26, improve more slowly until about 30, then are just fighting off physical declines with experience after that. So maybe I think there's + and - to an older player from a basketball perspective. But then there's also a question of the reason for holding back -- which is often academic.

Related to this, this is why it was dumb for the Warriors to draft 24 year-old Epke Udoh over 20 year-old Greg Monroe. I get the defensive focus. I get that Greg may never jump like Epke.
But good lord, that's FOUR years of advanced development that Greg has ahead of him that Udoh already has had -- and Greg was already a better player.

Diehard warrior fans will tell you that they wish they had drafted Monroe. That was just a dumb move by warrior mgmt.

So if Nate Britt came to Georgetown he would already be considered a man? That would make some on this board very happy.

I kind of disagree. I mean, certainly Greg is the better player right now and is also much more likely to develop into the superior player long term. But Greg would have been ill fit for GS's Nellie-ball scheme. Not to say that Udoh is a very good fit either. I guess I'm just happy that GS passed on Greg because he ended up at a team that's long term probably much better for him fit wise.

I actually wished at the time that GM fell one spot more to Utah but seeing how things turned out there, not sure it would have been any better than Detroit.

I dont know that Britt is 2 years older than kids in his class (Ive always heard 1 year older). However, I do love his game. He can handle, dish, shoot, defend, great bball iq, great kid. Only problem may be size.

Well, for once I'd be happy with a kid that was "old" for his grade. We've heard plenty about how Roy was young for his year. How Monroe was young for his year. Let's try the opposite and see how it turns out.

This kid needs to be our #1 backcourt priority for '13 if he isn't already. We have to be able to keep local talent with us.
