I saw the original version as a kid. Scared the hell out of me.

hoyainspirit, I did not mean to imply that I had seen the crappy remake. I saw the original, just after seeing AoD. In fact, I saw it on the Mall, so when the UFO flies past the Capitol in the movie, I was looking right at the Capitol. Freaky.

I'm not sure why we started this thread in the first place. Don't you know, elvado, that it's not acceptable to be proud to be an American anymore? www.fox40.com/videobeta/?watchId=1ece9d19-68c9-48e3-8ecb-3894f4a8f6caI'll need to consult with Christine O'Donnell on this, but I'm pretty sure that the first amendment doesn't create a separation of patriotism and state.

That's from Fox (and Drudge has linked to it). Therefore it is irrelevant/fake/biased/racist (take your pick).

Hopefully the garbage we elected this month can fix this pressing issue.

That's from Fox (and Drudge has linked to it). Therefore it is irrelevant/fake/biased/racist (take your pick). Well, what's the other side of this story? You've got a kid and his veteran grandfather and then absolutely nothing about what the context of this decision was in, or what the history of this kid is at the school. There may not be any other side of the story - it might just be a horribly stupid decision. But since it's FOX and Drudge and it fits the narrative, you'll never find out.

You'll never find out because it will not be addressed (even to correct or put in perspective) on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, PBS, MSNBC, Washington Post, NY Times, LA Times, etc.

There may not be any other side of the story - it might just be a horribly stupid decision. But since it's FOX and Drudge and it fits the narrative, you'll never find out. The news report indicates that the station did try to contact the school and the superintendent of schools, but had not heard back, probably because of the holiday. Since Fox and Drudge do have a hold of it, though, for that very reason, I'd be surprised if there was not a follow-up with a response. It's really hard to try to imagine what the other side of this story would be. But I'll tell you what. If it turns out this kid was beating people with his flag stick, or riding around with it in the parking lot bullying other people and shouting, "Hey, wetbacks! This is my country. Suck it!", then I will totally condemn him for that. (But really, it still shouldn't mean he can't fly the flag on his bike. That is not the behavior that needs to be corrected in that extreme scenario.) As for Jersey, you'll have to clarify for me. By "the garbage we elected this month," do you mean Senator Barbara Boxer or Governor Jerry Brown? It is a California story, after all. (I know, right? Go figure!)

It's news on Drudge because it fits the narrative of our schools aren't patriotic enough and ties some ambiguous racial excuse into it as well.

If a 5th grader were told to lose his Kufi it would damn well be national news though wouldn't it?

Yes, because that would tie in with Drudge's narrative and would get the birthers going. These flag stories grow tiresome - the story would be no different if he tried to fly the Stars and Bars.

Come on, let's stop pretending that kids in public schools have rights.

You think so? Last I checked, my kids still do the pledge of allegiance to the Stars and Stripes every morning in school. Been quite a while since anyone pledged Allegiance to the Stars and Bars.
What this really stands for is the proposition that the news media cares not for the trampling of what it perceives as "majority rights". However, you step on the rights of one of their favorite minorities, and all hell breaks loose.

Roughly 10 years ago, the determinative issue in the Republican primary was whether the Stars/Bars could fly on government property in SC - only reinforced by the "black baby" whisper campaign against the McCain family. I'd like to think that times are different, but suffice to say that handling of the Obama presidency in certain circles has not inspired much confidence.

In other circles it is simply Obama's handling of his own Presidency that erodes the confidence...

I agree, the NY Times should stick to printing important stories: www.nytimes.com/2010/10/31/fashion/31Unwashed.html?_r=2&pagewanted=all

To be fair, they make the argument that smelly people are a national trend, from California to Pennsylvania, and not just a local story.

Here is your response from the school superintendent: www.kcra.com/r/25754519/detail.htmlBased on that, I think I am going to go a head and file this one under "horribly stupid decision." Listening to what he has to say, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of context that would explain it in any other way. Displaying the flag is not following the first amendment responsibly? Really? You're going to stick with that? I'm sorry, but if students at a public school in the United States of America are getting offended because someone is displaying the American flag, those students are the ones who have a problem that needs correcting, not the student who is displaying the flag. You can complain all you want about how this is not the most important news story going on. Fine. I won't disagree with that. But that doesn't mean I can't find it appalling. Because it is that too.

Was I the only one hoping that the flagpole (or flag-stick, as it were) was going to become dislodged, slip into the spokes of his back tire, grind the bike to a halt, and send him over the handlebars and into the curb?
I loathe children of all nationalities and patriotic leanings.
