Practice Facility....JTIII's comment about the practice facility was less than encouraging. As HSB mentioned someone asked if the campaign was kicking off. Coach looked around and said "i am looking to see if someone's here (administrator i assumed) that could answer that question." After not seeing someone he was searching out he simply said "it better". That was NOT a good response. Seemed like a sensitive subject. I think we as a bball community need to all do our part to write to the AD write to DeGeoia and really make it clear there is support for this thing. Does NOT sound like a done deal at all. Maybe i was interpreting wrong but coach's comment left me feeling less than optimistic. We need this thing to stay competitive in recruiting/the national scene and to retain JTIII... Absolutely agree. My sense from Coach's response was that facility fundraising, let alone construction, isn't near starting and/or is clearly not in a place he's happy with - despite previous recent posts that high level donors were told that the fundraising was imminent, that wasn't the response from coach. Heard last year that science facility construction was ahead of the MSF, and also that GU was looking for a big ticket/marquee donor to make a large initial donation to kick things off. Also clear is the fact that Coach/the basketball program want it more than the fans do; Coach almost seemed irritated by the question, which leads me to believe he's doing all he can and needs others to exert whatever influence we have. Don't know if that's a letter writing campaign, or threat (and action) to withhold donations if it's not started, but I'm open to suggestions and will be happy to participate. Couple of unrelated observations: - Enjoyed walking through the signature line with my son, and always makes me proud to see the program that Coach, staff and players have made. Markel was first in line, bright and outgoing, engaging in conversation and appeared to be genuinely happy to be at GU. He's coming into a good situation with several great mentors. While I'm singling out Markel, to a man, each player was great - can't say I'd be as happy/polite to be up early signing autographs and answering hundreds of repeated "how are you doings"/"welcome to GU"/"looking forward to seeing you play"s. Coach noted he was pleased by the distribution of youth and experience; don't underestimate the value of senior leadership and experience on this team. - At the early part of practice, Jerelle, Nate, and Moses were off on a side basket pounding the hell out of each other. Moses took an elbow or hand to the face and walked off to get it taken care of before returning. Haven't seen that much size and aggression in such numbers on this team in a while. They will be great for each others development, and I like the implications for our low post presence. - Will be interested in watching Hollis' development this year; interesting stuff going on.

No indications on the starting line up they specifically mixed it up i'm sure. Austin and Chris were on separate teams.

Wouldn't be ideal..
but Jerrelle has started to get a bad rap IMO.
I'm not sure why when looking at projected rotations and minutes breakdowns that people simply have omitted him coming into this year.
We hope for the more talented kids to jump over him, but Jerrelle grasped the system on both ends fairly well (and quickly) last year. He wasn't a threat, but he at least knew where to be on the floor.
If he's quicker and has worked on his jumper, there still will be a spot for him.
based on III's history, I wouldn't be surprised to at least see him start at the beginning of the year and wait for Lubick (or Sims) to replace him once they prove they're capable. Even now, they still have over 2 weeks to get that done..so no time to look at that as any real indicator.
I hope Henry, and Nate both displace him. Moses, as well. As they all have more upside. But as of right now, they have to prove it.

Agreed.
Jerrelle impressed early because he was obviously a quick learner and he hit the boards. He disappointed late because he seemed to be too tentative on offense for someone that got as many minutes as he did as the season progressed.
However, if he has shown he can play effectively facing the basket and boards, I don't have a problem with it.

Any reports on what Henry did (other than use Twitter) over the off-season to improve his overall game? We have reports/interviews of Julian working with Hibbert, but did Henry participate? Does he look stronger? If he could contribute 10+ quality mins., it would certainly help keep the 4/5 rotation fresh and out of foul trouble.

To add an addendum to my report, which others have noted, is that Chris made some of the same mistakes we've been harping on for years, most notably dribbling into trouble and getting stuck under the basket, then trying a heave or a prayer of a layup. Love the guy, but he's gotta fix that.
Also, it's clear that Henry's working hard and wants to improve, but Julian is clearly in command out there. It was great to see Moses working on his footwork one-on-one with an asst coach. We might have a solid frontcourt by mid-season.

Jerelle has the experience. With Greg gone, I would be surprised if his 12 mpg are reduced. If he works hard during the game, Julian becomes a BE force in the post and Austin, Chris and Jason hit from outside at last year's rate, he will get plenty of space at the 4 to shoot, board and attack the basket. Continue to practice the six-footer, Jerelle. Teams will dare you to shoot it.

mmmmm, I beg to differ. I don't see JT3 benching his senior, 3 year starter at PG for a freshman and a guy who barely played.

Couple of thoughts from the practice. I thought Julian looked far and away the best of the bigs. Chris and Markel looked the best of the guards. Markel still has to learn the offense but his natural talent is undeniable. He's super quick and the ball looks like a yo-yo on his hand. Vee and Jerrelle looked good as well. I'll echo everything that was said about Bowen and HT. I thought Henry looked like a better version of himself from last year, same kind of mistakes but less of them. I'm a big Henry fan but I wouldn't expect a big jump from him. I'd also caution about getting too excited about Moses. He's definitely athletic but he is a project. If he sees more than 3-5 mpg the team is either going to be great or terrible.
Chris was out of control for most of the scrimmage and Austin seemed to just be going with the flow. Austin doesn't bother me but Chris needs to be better for this team to finish where some of us expect.

Unless he has made a major jump in his offensive game, I would hope that Jerelle's minutes are limited this year. He was a breath of fresh air last year because of his intensity and effort. However, he simply had no offensive game and even his rebounding tailed off as the season got longer. Hopefully, between Henry, Nate, Moses and Jerelle we have some improved rebounding and some semblance of an offense from that spot on the floor.

Is anyone at all concerned that with seniors that are trying to make their last impression on nba scouts (cuz lets just be totally honest and acknowledge that both Austin and Chris want to get to the league) they will really press this year and try to impress. IT seems they are both right on the cusp, but neither is a lock to be drafted. I dont think either would do this intentionally to the detriment to the team, but you see this all the time.

I don't think benching was the issue, just that the backups could be capable in case it were to happen. Like I said, Chris looked good for the most part.

The day started badly with an hour in traffic getting there, but worth it. This was easily the best open practice yet. Kudos to the Hoop Club and staff for a great event. The team is obviously still a work in progress, but looking good. Good to see the big guys working on interior D and rebounding. Julian, Henry looking like they've put in some gym time. I asked Hnery about his new number and he said "It's my new thing." As noted above, Jerelle looked strong and was hustling. Vee was helping the frosh and was maybe the fastest running the floor. Those two should earn some minutes. Moses is going to be a project but has an NBA body and was playing the other guys tough on D. He was often a bit confused with the offense, but this early, many of the guys were getting out of position. Moses has a huge set of hands as we noticed when he was signing an autograph for my kid. Looking forward to the season.
