I'm not sure Nerlens is a fan of Pete Thamel, but at least he must have some sources. I won't get my hopes up given there's a new rumor every hour.... PT might be trying to employ Jedi mind tricks on NN, linking his name to his Tweet, knowing the disdain NN holds for PT. I feel like Thamel knows that NN is getting sick of the rumors so is going to start some Georgetown's way...maybe Edited NN off.

Ummm, really? The blue blood programs kill themselves for the top prospects now, completely understanding that a lot of them are going pro after one year. The only reason a lot of the kids stay is because they wouldn't get drafted in the first round/lottery. Do you really think that Cuse / Duke / UNC /UCLA are recruiting different players than UK is right now? The only difference is they aren't successful at getting recruits like Calipari is--I mean, UNC, Cuse & OSU were finalists for Davis; UCLA & Kansas were in Terrance Jones' top 5. Heck, Duke's best player the last two years were 1& Dones. So, considering they're all recruiting the same players, what is he complaining about? Really, the only difference b/w Calipari and Coach K / Roy Williams is that the latter two don't actually care about whether their top recruits go on to be successful in the NBA. For example, Calipari wasn't the one lobbying for the NCAA to move the draft deadlines back so he had "roster certainty". And Calipari doesn't beg his players to stay another year when they could be lottery picks now (think Harrison Barnes wishes he had been able to go pro out of HS?). Calipari might be paying his players, he might be cheating, but he's honest about what he cares about--taking players that should be eligible for the draft and making sure they get better during the year they aren't allowed to make money for their labor. In my opinion, that's a lot better than the hypocrisy from coaches like Coach K. Not to mention that the players he gets that stay four years graduate. He's not Gary Williams or Bob Huggins. Pretty sure none of his players are hitting women either.

Sorry for the digression but...
TBird, You should read the article first. He doesn't rip on Calipari at all. He actually says he thinks he's a good guy and genuinely cares about his players. He's just lamenting that Cal has found a way to use the system in his favor and that changes the landscape of college ball. Now everyone will go for one and dones. Obviously teams do it already but he thinks it will become more extensive.
The article is just saying he wishes things were different but he understands that these are the rules. I think we can all agree with that.
Most importantly though and not covered in the article... Cal's last two schools probably aren't too pumped about vacating those wins he "earned." Not sure if it will happen to UK but I wouldn't be surprised.

T-Bird: I have a Lexington born and bred, UK alumnus wife who makes Ashley Judd look like a casual fan. I get to hear a similar argument to what you made at every family function. And it has some merits in my opinion. But, in a perfect world, do I think the Coach K's and Roy Williams' of the world would recruit these type of players...no. However, the NCAA is about the farthest thing in the world from a eutopia, and what makes them great coaches is the ability to adapt to what they "need to do" to win championships. In the current college bball landscape, recruiting one and dones who care about an education about as much as Kim Kardashian cared about Kris Humphreys is the best model to increase your national title odds. Calipari already has cornered this market. And like any shrewd business, makes it extremely difficult for others to tap into his market share. By offering "promotions" like paid summer league camp invites, a direct line to World Wide Wes, an osbcure position in the basketball office, a junior marketing consultant job within Nike's group that deals with UK hoops - he offers incentives others cannot or will not (All of these examples are something a connection to recruited players have received through the years). And by the letter of the NCAA law, NONE of these actions are illegal. Can the NCAA ever prove that an AAU coach isn't qualified to be a paid summer camp employee? Or that giving the cell phone information and scheduling a lunch with a friend like WW Wes to an uncle that's an inspiring agent is anything more than a friendly (no money exchange) gesture? That a brother of a player with a college degree couldn't get a junior marketing position on his own? All of it is shady and working within the gray area, but nothing that will ever warrant NCAA action under the current system. I thought Eamonn Brennan (now with ESPN where this article would have never happened) was spot on in the article below taht he wrote when Cal was first taking over at UK, where he talks about no specific Calipari incident, but rather his "aura" of impropriety. We all know it doesn't taste right, smell right, or act right, but no one has any proof that its gone bad. (as for the Camby, Williams, and Rose issues at UMASS and Memphis, it dealt with 2 agents and an SAT, which Cal maybe should have known about but could never be attached to). rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/blog/the_dagger/post/Should-Kentucky-worry-about-Calipari-s-recruitin?urn=ncaab,151749 Brennan concludes the article by stating that at 27 wins a year, the UK faithful won't care. Well Cal @uk has won 35 in 09, 29 in 10, and 36 so far in 11, an Elite Eight and Two final Fours. And UK fans MORE than don't care how he gets it done if it ain't illegal. As for Gtown, I'm torn. Do I like the integrity that is synonymous with our program? Of course. Do I want to win championships? Maybe more than I like the integrity!

To pretend otherwise is naive. The only reason UNC/ UCLA / Duke / whoever isn't recruiting classes like UK's is because they are unable to. Calipari wasnt even recruiting like this at Memphis, bc he couldn't while he was there. UK winning a title with Calipari isn't going to change that. To bring this back to Noel, as RDF said--Cuse is using the exact same tactics as UK, except Boeheim can't even figure out how to use Noel in a role that will maximize his ability. Coach K and Roy Williams are going after the same guys as Calipari, but they have such a horrible track record turning McD AAs into lottery picks, a lot of the really good players aren't interested anymore. Not to mention the fact that those two care more about their programs' success than their players' future success. Heck, even JT3 knows that the very best recruits are deciding based on a programs ability to get them into the NBA. I'd bet anything that Noel's decision (and Pollard's) will come down to what program they think will be the best at getting them into the NBA and which coaching staff and players he likes the best.

can we talk about this thread for it's intended purpose, nerlens. Now, I don't know about you guys, but the ongoing saga of his recruitment is driving me insane. Every other day it seems as if someone new is in the lead.

Every other day it seems as if someone new is in the lead. Yeah but we need something to entertain us as the long, long off-season begins! And the uncertainty will make it that much sweeter when Nerlens realizes that his future will be much brighter (and cleaner) with the Hoyas.

Yep, and this is why hoping that Zo's speech might have some influence on Noel is, sadly, laughable. Let's face it, one and dones aren't really concerned with the level of education they will receive during their only year on campus, nor are they planning to return to that campus to pursue their degrees. There could be an exception to the rule, but that player is very much the exception. Two and dones could be a different story, because at least they'll be halfway to a degree (hopefully) upon departure.

He said one or two years in an interview sometime after his Gtown visit. So he is at least entertaining that thought contrary to what I keep reading here. He also realizes that he projects as a power forward or maybe even Jeff Green type small forward at the NBA level which means he needs to polish his skillset and get stronger physically. He's 6-10 215 lbs right now which is rail thin. He would probably have to get up to 225 for small forward and 240 for power forward to be physically ready for the NBA.

Nerlens Noel and Georgetown would go together like peanut putter and jelly while Nerlens Noel and Syracuse go together like cocaine and waffles.

Nerlens has a new blog entry associated with the Jordan Brand Classic all star game that has just been posted. Make of this quote what you will: "I’ve narrowed my list down to three schools: Syracuse, Kentucky and Georgetown. Basically, I’m just looking for a school where I feel comfortable that has a style of play that’s more up and down so I can get out in the open court and play to my strengths." www.slamonline.com/online/college-hs/high-school/2012/03/nerlens-noel-jordan-brand-classic-diary/
