Here's an update from Memphis Roar on JOB's recruitment: Johnny O’Bryant (6-10, 245, Cleveland, MS #6 ESPNU Super 60) had the line of the day. Asked the schools that are at the top of his recruiting list, O’Bryant responded, “Florida, Miami and Georgetown and all the usual suspects in the neighborhood (Memphis, Ole Miss and Mississippi State).” Since last year’s Nike Peach Jam, O’Bryant has gained 23 pounds and grown an inch. He runs the floor, plays hard at both ends and has a non-stop motor. O’Bryant has a 3.0 in the classroom and a qualifying 19 on his ACT. That's an important update - shows we're still in the mix with the departure of Cox.

Dont you think we will need to wait at least another week or so until we see any effects that Cox's departure had on recruiting? Recruits aren't going to change their mind the second they hear about a coach leaving, especially an assistant

Recruits aren't going to change their mind the second they hear about a coach leaving, especially an assistant I agree with you, but I think it will take longer than a week. Cox will need to get re-situated and see how close his ties with the kids are, or if he needs to focus on a new group. Persuading kids to come to GU -- a fairly well proven program -- is a good deal different from convincing them to go to a program that hasn't done anything since the '70s, and has a brand new, first time head coach. If JT3 is all over the recruits for whom Cox may have opened the door, we'll be in good shape.

You folks actually think Cox alone opened all these so-called doors? I think you are giving him too much credit.

Telep article over the weekend had O'Bryant listing the following:
Kentucky, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, LSU, Baylor, Florida, Georgetown, Alabama and Miami.
"He said Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury has been the most active"

ESPN review of O'Bryant from this weekend:
"Johnny O'Bryant (Cleveland, Mo./East Side) 2011, C, 6-foot-10, 245 pounds Team: Jackson Tigers O'Bryant, the top center in the Super 60, played very physically and used his added upper-body strength to score through contact on a regular basis. He ran the floor well and displayed excellent touch and body control when he received the ball while on the move. O'Bryant faced and attacked off the dribble from the wing and baseline and rebounded at a high rate in and out of his area. On the offensive glass, O'Bryant finished with power above the rim. Defensively, he has the skill set to start the break with a bust-out dribble. He knocked down 17-footers off the catch with a smooth and confident stroke and was a matchup problem throughout the game. O'Bryant is strong, athletic and mobile enough to defend not only a center but a power forward as well. He has clearly improved both physically and skillwise and is without a doubt one of the elite post players in the Class of 2011."

hoyaboya, a correction: O'Bryant is from MS, not MO.

I know it's been mentioned in the thread on the main board, but hopefully the recent addition to the coaching staff will go a long ways toward making Johnny a Hoya. This kid sounds like a great fit!

Highsmith = dead on.
JOB is a good fit for Kirby's portfolio at GU, and it is not difficult to figure that JT3 wants JOB badly. He's probably the best player GU has recruited since JT3 has been here. Unbelievable talent.

It might be better if we are not expecting our brand new asst. coach to bring JOB with him lest we are all disappointed with our great new hire before our first game! Many other factors involved and we are competing with teams that play by different rules..

Does anyone know Johnny's background? Is he a Greg Monroe type or a OJ Mayo type? Just curious because some high profile kids are just looking for the school that best prepares them for the next level. Some kids are looking to get paid or receive some benefits for choosing your school. If JOB is looking for the school that best prepares him for the NBA then we should have as good of a chance as any other school..............

Good point, Saxa. I don't expect JOB to come necessarily. I see it as a goal and want our staff to think of it in the same way. If we set our goals lower, we'll achieve less than we otherwise may if we set high goals.

newport, let's not fool ourselves ALL these kids are looking to be prepared for the next level; some with a greater urgency than others. JOB, from reports, is a smart kid, good student, sick athlete with a high hoops IQ and a nice skill package. The most impressive thing I've read about the kid on the hoops front is his tenacity on the glass. That is much needed right now. Hopefully I'll get to see him in July @ Peach Jam.

I didn't mean to imply any expectations......just the fact that getting the Asst. Coach from the school that seems to be recruiting JOB as hard as any has to be a help. I certainly won't be disappointed in Kirby just because he doesn't bring us JOB. Although I WILL become a pretty big fan of his if he does!!
