I'm a little behind in my GU Lacrosse news, but a big fan. What are the expectations from some of our lax fans on the board? Who will be our stars, and what would you consider a successful season?

Well JJL, after two seasons of lackluster performance from our top rated recruiting classes not many people want to hope.
02/27/10 vs. Maryland Multi-Sport Field 03/03/10 vs. Harvard Multi-Sport Field 03/06/10 vs. St. John's Multi-Sport Field 03/13/10 at Syracuse Syracuse, N.Y. 03/17/10 vs. Delaware Multi-Sport Field 03/21/10 at Providence Providence, R.I. 03/27/10 vs. Duke Multi-Sport Field 04/02/10 at Navy Annapolis, Md. 04/07/10 vs. Mount St. Mary's Multi-Sport Field 04/11/10 vs. Notre Dame Multi-Sport Field 04/17/10 at Loyola (Md) Baltimore, Md. 04/24/10 vs. Massachusetts Hartford, Conn. 05/01/10 vs. Rutgers Multi-Sport Field 05/08/10 at Villanova Villanova, Pa.
This is our first year in the BE. You can see from our schedule that we are now playing Notre Dame, Nova, and Providence. The top three teams are Gtown, Notre Dame, and Cuse. There is an AQ so two of them will have to hope for an at-large.
Someone was saying on the laxpower board that how we do on our first 4 games will be a good indicator. 2-2 should be nice but I am hoping for 3-1; people say that would too good, though.
We have never beaten UMD at home, but done so twice at theirs. We beat Harvard in OT last year. If we don't beat St. John's I'm going to cry. Syracuse is coming off of two national championships, so I'm thinking not.
In the worst case scenario (knock on wood) we go 5-5 with the rest with Ws against Delaware, Providence, MSM, Rutgers, and Nova. If we don't have substantial wins this season, like against Maryland, Harvard, Cuse, Navy, or Duke (or ND depending on how they do) we are going to have yet another tournament-less season.
The expectation is that the seniors will step it up this year, with Dowd, Ehrmann, Kocis, et al leading the way. The guys apparently looked good in fall ball, but that's like saying the football team did well against Maryland in the summer.
The Hoyas have made it only once to the final four, losing 12 times in the elite eight. The NCAA MLax tournament only features 16 teams so we haven't really made it far.

Thanks for the post, I was wondering what people with more insight were predicting coming off probably our worst season in over a decade (even 15 years?). I'm thinking we bounce back after a humbling season. Personally I'd be happy with a return to the NCAAs, and just build on that going forward. Historically our defense has been solid, but the offense has been inconsistent. In your opinion, are we on track for a more potent offense?
I'll be able to catch a couple games at GU this season, and will definitely be at the Loyola game up here.

Perhaps a semi-non sequitur, but I've always found lacrosse rankings maddening. There are so few D-1 teams that teams barely over 500 end up high in the rankings. For example, last year the final poll had Maryland at #14 with their gaudy 8-6 record; then at #15 the poll had a tie between Bucklnell (9-7) and UMass (8-5). We finished #18 at 7-6.
The first time I noticed how silly these rankings are was in the days before Hoya Blue when the SID would put up posters around campus to advertise big games. I believe it was the #6 ranked Hoyas, with a record of 5-2 hosting #9 ranked Johns Hopkins, who were something like 4-4. It seemed odd to me, so I investigated and learned that, at that time, there was something like 45 D-1 lacrosse programs and only maybe 20 of them who were D-1 in anything more than name.

The situation has improved a bit, but not that much. Unfortunately, as much as lax people like to say that the field has been opening, it hasn't happened that much in MLax. WLax is a different story. There are Cinderella stories now and then but they don't really grab the gold. As for the offense. What can I say? Every year we have had the same discussion. Every year we have players that ought to explode and get mad hat tricks. Every year we play a subdued style of Lax. Look at the painful example of Scotty Kahoe. Kahoe spent four years at GU at multiple positions, had several injuries, and was not hall of fame bound. He transfered to Cuse for his "masters" and went crazy - unfortunately in a good way. So maybe this year will be the year we get it together. I predicted Brendan Cannon will have a great senior year but we ended up not making the tournament. Sticks crossed. Look at past year threads for our style of play, what that means for our team, our coaches, our outlook. If anyone is really interested: www.laxpower.com is pretty good about all kinds of lax news and discussions. Go to Forums, Mens D-1, find the Gtown thread. It is a repeat of all of the above, only from people who know much, much more than me.

I asked the same question of the laxpower board and was only told that there isn't a tournament. It might have something to do with the max number of games you are allowed to play. Fall ball counts in some way toward that total. Then again I don't see the ACC tournament being scratched.

WGTB Sports is unable to broadcast this game due to the amount of media already at the game. Tune into guhoyas.com, ESPNU, or Maryland radio for coverage of the game. We'll do our best to get the rest of the season to you live on WGTB Sports. GO HOYAS!

Ugh. The Hoyas let one slip away this afternoon. The Terps absolutely owned the second half, thanks mostly to a stretch of uninspired, turnover-prone offense by the Hoyas.

There was too much other media(ESPNU, Maryland Radio, guhoyas.com webcasting), which left no room in the press box. We didn't think we would be able to broadcast the game until late in the week, due to the desire for most of our volunteers to go to the Notre Dame game. Once we found out we were able to, there was no room.

This loss was my fault guys. Came home from the ND game and watched the first half of the game on ESPNU. I drove down to watch the second half in person. Clearly I shoudn't have left my house and jinxed the team. My bad.

Men win against Harvard 13-12.
Harvard came back and scored 4 goals in 1min 40 sec (last 2 min of the game).

yeah sheesh crazy 4th quarter. Glad we pulled out the win. Team looks a lot better than last year IMO. Definitely have some work to do, but it sure looks like an NCAA team.

Pluses: 26 goals in two games against good competition.
Minuses: Play some damn defense and stop freaking out in the second half.
Overall, this definitely counts a positive start to the season, but they better tighten up. Anyone know who played goal? I heard Davis sat against Maryland.

Not sure who it was but he made a few good positioning saves, didn't look like our strongest play out there today.
Also, whats up with Barhney, commentators were talking about how much we missed him (obviously) but how long are we going to be without him?

Yikes, sounds like a crazy finish. Glad we got the W.
Caught some of the replay on MASN tonight. The MSF looks really cool with the mounds of snow pretty much completely circling the field.

Barney appeared injured in the maryland game( prior to it starting) and they were tlaking about whether or not they were going to red shirt him or not.
