We haven't lost a Non conference game @ verizon since Oregon in 2007 season.
And we've only lost 4 Non confernce games @ verizon under JTIII: Temple, Illinois, Vandy, and Oregon.

In my experience, "trap" games are virtually always road games. I know we don't have the confidence in the home court advantage the way Syracuse or Pitt or Louisville or Marquette fans do, but I don't think it can be dismissed. If you throw out last season (which I think is justifiable because there was a whole lotta unprecedented stuff wrong with that team), JTIII teams have lost only 2 home Big East games since 2005. Even if you count last season, III's teams have only 2 "bad" home conference losses during his entire coaching tenure--Cincinnati last year and Providence to nail the coffin in the last 2005 regular season game. In other words, if we aren't in the middle of some unforgettable collapse, we don't lose games like this. I expect the gang to come out and play, and barring outrageous foul trouble, take care of business. Why throw out non-conference games? Trap game is always a misnomer, in my opinion, but we've definitely had some duds in Verizon, and two of those came against USF. We didnt lose, but it wasnt so comfortable, even for the 2007 Final Four team, if I recall. ON EDIT - I guess that was the 2008 team, not 2007. I put USF in the same class with SJU. Some times, you look back and wonder why we ever thought the game would be close, but other times, we are sweating out the last 5 minutes of a 5 point game. South Florida annoys me. If you beat them, you're supposed to. If it's close, or you lose, it's never good. Checking the awesome Hoya records maintained by DFW: www.hoyabasketball.com/records/bb-2000s.htm2006 - Beat USF 50-47 at home, right before the Duke win. I seem to recall them having a chance to win at the buzzer. 2006 - Lost 63-56 to USF in Tampa in the last game of the season, ending a chance for a bye, if I recall correctly. 2008 - Beat them by 10 on Super Tuesday. Nothing like checking a BB for election updates while paying attention to a boring game.

So, the point is that aside from those 4 losses, the two against ODU, and the crapfest last year, we are great at home? Ok. I would argue that we barely have a home court advantage in non-big games. Verizon is awesome for the Dukes, Lvilles, Cuses, Novas, UConns, but it's a snooze fest for USF, SJU and Providence. I would argue it could be one of the reasons those teams hang around against us. That said, what matters is that we are on a roll right now, and I agree with the general principle that we would never take a 14-7, 4-5 BE opponent that just beat Pitt lightly. We will take care of business.

There's a decent amount of evidence out there in different studies that says home court advantage has a lot more to do with travel, familiarity of venue, hotel stays, etc., than it necessarily has to do with crowd noise. I realize Verizon is hardly a juggernaut in terms of cheering, but our guys are used to it and its dead for the other team. Travelling from Florida mid-week with homework, etc. isn't a picnic.
I think it is much more of a trap week because South Florida is much better than their rep at this point. The talent is finally coming together a bit (before it all leaves) and we're the ranked foe.
8 losses in five years at any home is pretty freaking impressive. We're a good team, and many teams need their home court to get up. I wouldn't be surprised if it gives us an edge in neutral/away games.

This would be contradicated by the fact that as I just mentioned above that we almost never lose at home in the "non-big" games. If you're saying that we don't win by 30 every time but only win close, I don't think that undermines the argument. The win is the thing.

Off the top of my head, i can think of 5 games we lost last year at home alone. We are a good home team when we are good, and a bad home team when we are bad. It seems that is more the case than anything else. It's just my opinion, but there isnt much worth noting about how we play in Verizon, other than all teams play a little better at home.

The average team plays +8 versus being on the road, so it is actually a bit more than a little. For example, we're favored by 12 over S Florida by Ken Pom -- never mind if that's valid, that's about an 89% chance of winning historically for his 12 point favorites. We're 5 point favs versus Villanova -- 7 points -- and he has us at 65%. The amount it swings revolves around the margin -- closer to even the bigger the swing in chance of victory, but even here it's adding about a 1 in 4 chance of victory based on home court.

No, you are right. Saying a "little" is silly.

Our homecourt advantage is small.
But let's say this were in Topeka, Kansas. Score? Exactly.
It's not neutral but even neutral we'd win this 8 or 9 of 10. And we will tomorrow.

RPI wise, they are better than 50% of the ACC teams and UNC. While a team we should beat, we will need to earn it.

God bless ESPN 360!
I'll be in class from 7-10, but I definitely won't be paying attention now that I confirmed it works in the school building.

Main point tonight is stopping Dominique Jones. That guy can shoot and he can make his own shot. Unlike Hazell, he drives to the basket as well as spotting up. Mr. Clark, Your job tonight is to stop Mr. Jones. Stop Jones, Stop USF. make someone else shoot. Oh right, they got nobody else.

I realize there are a lot of classes that are absolutely mandatory, but I hope there's a lot more of "I have class from 7-10, but I'll definitely be at the Verizon Center instead" than the above statement. Weeknight attendances have always been difficult for both the non-student and student fans. Shouldn't be the case.
