The one great advantage in playing only six or seven guys is that the starting five becomes similar to a great NFL offensive line in terms of cohesiveness and ability to run the offense. Syracuse will be a HUGE test of just how good this Hoya team is. The DOME and the four players Johnson, Onuaku, Jackson and Joseph are new tests for the team. My keys to the game:
1) Julian Vaughn & Greg Monroe must stay out of foul trouble. If either gets a quick foul or two then Sims must play and be creditable. I believe this game will be close and the Hoyas must have the two post players in the game to get good shots down the stretch.
2) Chris Wright's shooting. Against the Syracuse zone the shots will be there for Chris and the way he has been squaring his body is a thing of beauty. He could really go off.
3) Tempo: Look for the Hoyas to run when it's there but on half court possessions I think JT3 will have them run a lot of clock on each possession. This Syracuse edition (like most of them) plays to the crowd and looks to go highlight reel whenever possible. Making them work on defense for 30 seconds could keep our starting five out of foul trouble and frustrate the Orange.
4) Emotions: I truly believe something "extra" will happen and I have to believe Benimon will be involved. There is so much hype surrounding this game and the intensity will be tangible. It is essential the Hoyas keep their cool and not be penalized with uneeded technical fouls. This is a big game and the sporting world will be watching. I say Benimon could be involved because his no nonsense approach could get under the skin of high flying pretty boy Johnson and Canadian Joseph.

Turnovers will be the key to this game. The Hoyas have cut down greatly on their turnovers since Marquette. The Cuse zone causes a lot of turnovers by the guards when they get stripped trying to drive the lane or make lazy passes at the top . This leads to breakouts the other way. I agree matchup zone is the best way to go. I could live with losing this game because Johnson and Triche killed us on 3pt shots rather than drives to the basket. Got to keep in touch with Routins on the perimeter though.

The Key to this game is to stop Dash Riley for 40 mins. Oh wait .. he won't get any run until his Sr. yr .. never mind. on a serious note .. Chris , Jason , Hollis and Austin - we need two of these 4 to be shooting well against that over-rated zone and keep our bigs out of foul trouble. Triche is an average guard(been saying it all yr - NOT IMPRESSED) and Jardin is inconsistent. Rautins(who was scoreless last game) and Johnson must be contained and not given many open shots. They are good at second chance pts and points off of turnovers(Kris Joseph plays hard and has gotten much better). We've got to box out and avoid stupid turnovers. One thing I can say about our team is that we've taken better care of the ball in recent games which is great. Over-all , I feel we win in a tight game and our guards eat them up along with a big game from Julian. Their fans are the most annoying of any team in the country and pure trash. They should've been swallowed instead. HOYAS WILL WIN!

Looking forward to beating the living ship out of the #1 (RPI) team in the country...
Their front line is strong and athletic but not tall or talented. Inside outside, work them and make them move their feet - they will foul and fall.

3. UConn and Nova both hurt us this way, and our guys have started to pick up a nasty habit of not getting back on defense after a miss or turnover. We're going to have to do a much better job of correcting this problem and consistently get back in transition D. I don't recall the Hoyas getting burned like that against Nova, not like they were against UConn. Here's my take on the keys to the game. Syracuse does not have the guards that Villanova does and therefore can't penetrate off the dribble as well. So how Syracuse can hurt you and get high percentage shots is off their fast breaks and off their offensive rebounds. Wes and Kris can also blow by you for an easy dunk or layup in the half court if you give them a favorable angle. So....the Hoyas must indeed not turn over the ball. Try to make the Cuse get all their points in the half court. It would decrease their fg% and it would take some fire out of the Cuse team and its crowd because as someone mentioned previously they do get a jolt from the highlight-type plays. Try to make the Cuse into a jump shooting team. The Cuse can score from the perimeter but its not their greatest strength. The only one you want to keep from going crazy from the perimeter is Andy. Most importantly when Syracuse's misses the Hoyas must box out and grab rebounds. I'm going to say this again that tomorrow would be a nice time to consider putting in Jerrell for a few minutes alongside Greg and Julian, especially if the Cuse front court (which is talented) is dominating the boards. Make the Cuse play slower than they want in the half court and we'll see just how discipline they are. If they prove to be great at this and if they knock down a slew of outside shots despite the defense Gtown throws at them, then, well it wasn't meant to be. On offense unless Jason, Chris and Austin are just going "off" from the perimeter like crazy, this is not a game in which the Hoyas can afford for Greg to be passive or to miss 10 out of 14 shots. The Hoya offense is the perfect vehicle to attack the Cuse zone but it won't make a difference if our guards aren't making their threes and outside shots.

no question, if our bigs stay in the game we counter some of their best strengths much better and create advantages of our own, like getting their bigs off the court by attacking inside.
just picked up some interesting observations about the fuSU-MQ box score from one of their boards, worth posting here:
Rick Jackson 5/5 and 7 blocks Arinze Onuaku 6/7 shooting +22 rebounding advantage Brandon Triche 5 assists, 1 turnover Wes and Kris double-doubles
22 turnovers 1-8 3 point shooting 4 fouls on Kris and Wes only won by 5
Jackson and Onomotopea are not having that sort of stat line against a real front line, our rebounding is much improved (especially compared to a short MQ team) and if we can get TOs like that, well wooohooo!

Syracuse homer Sean McDonough scheduled to do play-by-play - at least Bill Raftery and Jay Bilas will be there to keep him honest. May be time to pipe in Rich instead.

Tough matchup but I think our guys are up to it. I don't think Cuse is better than us.
We need the same minutes from Jerrelle that we've been getting and Hollis to add some offense. Beyond that, defensive switching has to be crisp and we have to utilize passes to the baseline to spread out the zone and create passing/driving lanes and, as expected, strong inside/out passing with Greg at the top of the key.
I like us in this one but it's gonna be a nail-biter. HOYA SAXA!

Well, I was corrent in predicting a Hoya victory over Rutgers, so I'm feeling pretty good about my prognosticatory acumen these days. I think Tas and some others are a bit overly optimistic. I see this one as a fairly easy Cuse victory, somewhere in the 10-15 point range. Boeheim is very good at getting opposing big men in foul trouble. I see Monroe picking up 2 quick ones and battlling foul trouble the entire game. This is not a game we should be expected to win. Will need to bounce back Saturday against Cuse.

Your picking 'Cuse by 10-15?!?!?! With a pick like that, it is clear that when it comes to prognosticatory acumen, these are not your salad days.

I should clarify... Ranch, one bad prediction does not enhance or detract from your credibility. That was a poor choice of words. You're clearly waiting for the wheels to come off of our Hoya train and then pull the "I told you so." However, taking the starting 5 exclusively, in my estimation (and, admittedly, I could be a complete homer), I'd take Julian and Greg over Arinze and Jackson. Triche and Rautins vs. Austin and Chris isn't even remotely close. Edge, Georgetown. The matchup nightmare that is Johnson and their deeper bench is what makes this a toss-up in my mind (again, could be wrong). I think our TEAM is better. Syracuse has some guys that get theirs and it hurts them at times. Their guards are their biggest weakness as far as I can tell and I expect Jason, Austin, Chris and Hollis to exploit that. Greg at the top of the key and Julian down low should open up that zone enough to be effective. If we keep the Cuse in the sub to 70 pt. range, we win this one.

In simple terms, we're rebounding and shooting better than we have all season. We're putting up 70-80 points a game, which is a major difference from teams past. CW is playing the best ball of his career.
Limit the rebounding differential, expose the zone by hitting open shots, let Greg give their defense fits in the middle. We're playing this game at the best possible time for us, and seeing the Rutgers beatdown leaves me with no question that we're playing our best ball right now and are ready to go toe-to-toe with those clowns.

Last year we had only one big man and we still could have won at the end if Chris' shot had gone in. We can win this one! we are much stronger than last year. If we do, we'll have the confidence to make a run at the National Championship. This is a very important and winnable game.
