Question: Are we an underachiever if we put 3 guys on the All-Big East first team but don't win the BE title? No, a team with no seniors following a 12th place, NIT team that barely went .500 and with no new players that are contributing a lot stat wise the fact that we are in the hunt for a title makes this JTIII's finest coaching job to date imo

Ummm, yeah .. about that national recognition thing, I wouldn't worry about it too much - apparently we have a JULIUS Vaughn on our squad.

The three starting guards were a perfect 7-7 from three.
The team only committed 8 turnovers to 14 assists.
Both teams got 31 rebounds, and Pitt is one of the better rebounding teams in the game.
WHAT A WIN!!!!!!!! Best win of the season for sure. GO HOYAS!!!!!!!!
Cheers also to the 130-or-so fans at BlackFinn who packed it in and were loud and awesome.

"Thompson just had a better checkmate move than Dixon when he went to the matchup zone in the final minutes, which instantly led to Pitt jacking up contested jumpers and GU taking control." If that's not out coaching I'm not sure what is? The best thing about this move is that he did the exact same thing at Verizon back in '06 with the same result. I believe Pitt was also Top 10 ranked in that game. We went to the matchup zone and Pitt couldn't score for the last 8 minutes and we pulled out a close one. When JTIII made the shift tonight I was thrilled.

Chris had an awesome game. Apparently, when he does well, so do the Hoyas (no surprise, but check this out, from the AP following tonight's game):
"Georgetown is 13-0 when Wright scores in double figures but has lost all three games - to Villanova, Marquette and Old Dominion - in which he didn't."
Kinda makes sense when he has 1-7 games like Sunday, but damn, keep it up Chris!

Getting closer to February basketball. Improve the rotation and communication in the straight man, lock down with the match-up and reduce the turnovers and we are there. Such an improvement over last year on the boards generally, but need to grab the loose balls. Would be wonderful to have a sixth weapon with a Hollis breakout over the next three. Time for a kool-aid. +1

great win. the winner of the game was going to be the team that finally decided to play defense. fortunately, we started playing solid d with 6 minutes left. other than a few minute stretch the first half, we did a great job limiting turnovers. decent job on the boards. offensively, this team is almost unstoppable when we don't kill ourselves with TO's.
i was happy to see greg aggressively post up down low. now, he just has to make those bunnies. the lack of anything from the bench is still a major issue. pound rutgers saturday and get ready for the gauntlet next week.

My Thoughts:
1. No TV coverage for me so I listened to the game online. Rick is the best play by play radio announcer I have ever heard. Have to love an announcer who does play by play, analysis, and color all exceptionally well.
2. We need bench production at some point this season if we are going to have a realistic shot at the Final 4 and a BE Title. Foul trouble will be an issue in enough games, so that the bench will have to play minutes. Their production doesn't necessarily have to be on the offensive end but they need to be able to do two things - 1. Be a threat to make an open shot and 2. Play competent defense. Hollis used to be able to do both, and I am not worried about him getting back his stroke. Benimon isn't really much of a shooter now, but he knows what he is doing on the offensive end and plays great on D and the boards to make up for it. Henry shows flashes, but we need him to show more consistency and play within himself. I have not seen enough of Vee to know where he is at. I would like these guys to be able to contribute 40 minutes a game combined, and be able to give more if need be. I'm optimistic, but we need continued development.
3. Very happy about the work around the rim. We shot the 3 ball well, but we only took 10. Often times when they start to fall, a team gets 3 happy and loses focus on the offense and easy buckets. This team exploited the early hot shooting to get it inside and to blow by defenders for easy lay ups. Our offense is much more efficient when we shoot a low number of three point hoops.
4. Rebounding and turnovers. JT III can coach and the players can improve. Rebounding has improved dramatically from last year. GM, Vaughn, Clark, and Benimon are all very good on the glass. Our biggest weakness from last year is gone. Turnovers - our biggest weakness to start the year - has also improved dramatically. As we continue to face tougher defenses - UConn, Nova, Pitt - our turnovers have dropped. This can only be explained by the players playing within themselves as well as increased confidence and aggressiveness. We are not always looking for the back door pass or difficult cross court play - which results in a high number of TOs. Now we are utilizing dribble drive and isolation to let our players talent get hoops. Great work improving.
5. Composure. I was rattled listening to the game over the computer. Very impressive how this team keeps its cool. Anyone who has ever been to the PEC can tell you it is an intimidating place. This win bodes well for tournament time.
6. Hate to look ahead, but this nucleus of players is impressive. Perhaps the potential for next year will be enough to bring Monroe back. Personally, I hope we win the title this year and he goes pro.

Is that like a Victor Shomnick? Which game was it that we had Antonio Freeman playing for us? Walsh made that mistake both during the Villanova game and last night.

TAS, Antonio played in the NOVA game. The worst part was it was in a pre-game "things to watch for" piece. Some editing depts have clearly been trimmed due to the recession.
Last up, Henry Thompson!

I don't have a problem with shooting as many open 3s as we can, but I was really pleased by the way we didn't force the long-range shot where it wasn't open. In particular, Austin made 2 on consecutive possessions in the first half, the second of which (the bank shot) was arguably forced. Here's a guy who has been the consistent offensive leader in recent games, yet (yes I know he had foul trouble) he never decided that it was time for him to force the issue, because his teammates were picking up the slack. That sense of team is very encouraging.

ESPN can't give the Hoyas coverage tonight because it will only further illustrate to their viewers how much they screwed the pooch tonight by putting a game between two top 15 teams on the U (might as well be on the "Ocho"), while their two flagship networks showed a God-awful UNC team and two Big East non-factors.* *OK, Cincy is a little better than that. They're a pretty good team, but my point stands. In defense of ESPN.. these games are scheduled WAY in advance and no one expected Pitt to be much good this year.

Oh, and one more thought: I think all the talk on the board about the big 3 or our 3 stars isn't giving enough credit to JV and JC at all and is frankly counterproductive. It's the same problem as with the talk about whether this is GM's or AF's or CW's team. This isn't how basketball is played. Even when you've got a Danny and the Miracles situation, one player can't win a game without help. Nor can 3. Just because JV and JC haven't had 27+ point games this year doesn't mean they aren't making huge contributions. To think otherwise is to focus too much on points. JV is our leading shot blocker this year, and JC has the highest percentage of steals on the team (3% of every defensive possession he's on the floor--good for top 300 in the nation ... in a defense that doesn't encourage steals). Couple that with JV's 6 assists this game and great passing all year, and Jason being called upon to shoulder toughest perimeter defensive assignment every game. Both of these guys play hard, have made improvements on both ends of the floor and they're smart and unselfish enough to let the offense come to them. I am not sure I get this post (besides wondering who Danny and the Miracles are). I think everyone agrees that Clark and Vaughn have been awesome and are obviously crucial cogs in the machine. Who has said their contributions aren't important or valued? And, exactly what productivity is being countered by discussion of the Big 3? It's a discussion and I can't see how it is counterproductive to or frankly, has any impact on, anything.

Anaysts on our game: Goodman: - Pittsburgh was the biggest surprise for the first half of the season, but the Panthers aren’t a legitimate Top 10 team yet and that was clear over the last two games – an overtime win against Louisville at home and a loss to Georgetown at home last night. Don’t get me wrong, Pittsburgh is still a good team – but not an elite one.
Parish: Notable game from Wednesday: Pittsburgh's eight-game winning streak ended in a 74-66 loss to Georgetown. Chris Wright led all scorers with 27 points. The win pushed the No. 12 Hoyas to 14-3 overall, 5-2 in the Big East. No. 9 Pitt is 15-3 overall, 5-1 in the Big East. Which means Villanova is now alone atop the Big East standings. The Wildcats are 17-1 overall, 6-0 in the Big East.

Was really good to get a win at Pitt and break their 31 game home streak. Lots of good things our guys did as have been pointed out by many on this thread. But--- -Our interior defense for most of the game was terrible. -We had incredible success with of our threes. Without it we might have lost. Kinda the Marquette game in reverse. -Pitt was terrible with their threes.
So what I'm saying is that an awful lot of things went our way last night while we played only a so-so game.
