Just a great great win against a very good team at an extremely difficult place to play. After Nova, I still walked away from this team impressed and hopeful about our chances, and today just validated that. We play hard, we play smart, we are back to being a JTIII team. What a difference a year makes.
Chris was just phenomenal today. We have a big 3 that is just killer.

"Thompson just had a better checkmate move than Dixon when he went to the matchup zone in the final minutes, which instantly led to Pitt jacking up contested jumpers and GU taking control." I am never one to jump to give credit to the coach when the players are responsible for a win or a loss. But this one came down to III and Dixon (an early-season COY candidate) and III flat-out won the coaching battle. I will also reiterate my support for Austin as this team's MVP... if I could save one of AF, JV, CW, JV, or JC... AF is my number one choice.

Great win. I was yelling with about 6 minutes left that we needed to make a run and get some separation, so my takeaway is that things work out better when the Hoyas/refs/basketball listen to my rantings through the television.
More seriously, my thoughts: 1) Both coaches made great halftime adjustments on offense--the back and forth of the first few possessions was impressive. 2) I completely agree with the post that asked if any starting in the country 5 was better than ours. I think we could stand toe-to-toe with Kansas, Kentucky, and Texas until the bench comes in. We may not win them all, but we will have a great shot even against the very best in the country. 3) We got a bit lucky with Gibbs missing from 3 as much as he did. He took some long ones near the end of the game, but the fact that he went to the same spot on the floor on consecutive late possessions makes me think that's a spot he practices from. He also got a late game open look where either of 2 guards could have gotten a hand in his face--looked like we were almost daring him to shoot after he had missed a couple. 4) Don't know that I agree with the consensus that JTIII outcoached Dixon--I thought our guys made the push at the right time to pull away. More execution/hustle/bounces than coaching. That said, I thought JTIII did a really good job this game of managing rotations. Kept Austin on the floor as much as possible and kept our starters fresh for the 2nd half by stealing minutes with the bench in the 1st half. 5) I'm saying this in a positive way rather than to take anything away from the hustle and effort we're getting Vee/Hollis/Sims, but I think Benimon is best bench player right now.
Bottom line: great effort, great win and let's keep in tough at Rutgers--no looking beyond any games.

Oh, and one more thought: I think all the talk on the board about the big 3 or our 3 stars isn't giving enough credit to JV and JC at all and is frankly counterproductive. It's the same problem as with the talk about whether this is GM's or AF's or CW's team. This isn't how basketball is played. Even when you've got a Danny and the Miracles situation, one player can't win a game without help. Nor can 3. Just because JV and JC haven't had 27+ point games this year doesn't mean they aren't making huge contributions. To think otherwise is to focus too much on points. JV is our leading shot blocker this year, and JC has the highest percentage of steals on the team (3% of every defensive possession he's on the floor--good for top 300 in the nation ... in a defense that doesn't encourage steals). Couple that with JV's 6 assists this game and great passing all year, and Jason being called upon to shoulder toughest perimeter defensive assignment every game. Both of these guys play hard, have made improvements on both ends of the floor and they're smart and unselfish enough to let the offense come to them.

3 have 3 guys who can go for 30 on any given night and 2 other guys who can go for 20. There's a lot of offense in that starting 5.

Any coach who doesn't prepare his team for Chris diving to the hoop on the baseline inbounds is committing malpractice. We use that play game after game after game. It's almost the only one we have.* * and it's one more than we had last year Not true. You'll see a bunch of cross-court missed threes.

Read article today that said Gibbs was interested in coming to Georgetown until Hoyas signed Chris, then he sighned with Pitt so that he could play the point. He made the right choice. he would never have beat Chris out here as starter.

Have a feeling we are going to get a lot of national media love after this. Unless something like Baylor beating Kansas happens, our game was really the biggest remaining game until Saturday. Would be nice and well deserved. Maybe we should, but we won't. Unless it's during a game on ESPN and it comes up in the in game discussion, you won't hear about us. Same as every year. Greg still won't be dominant enough. Bench still will be too weak. Sorta like Hoyatalk without the talk part.

ESPN was all over us in 2007--Majerus and Lavin in particular could be seen actually drooling when talking about the Hoyas.

"Thompson just had a better checkmate move than Dixon when he went to the matchup zone in the final minutes, which instantly led to Pitt jacking up contested jumpers and GU taking control." If that's not out coaching I'm not sure what is? It's out-coaching over the final 8 minutes after the first 32 were relatively even. Yeah, that's the most important part, so feel free to feel giddy. ;D Both teams had problems adjusting their defense to what the opponent was doing--Brad Wannamaker ain't THAT good like the Hoyas were making him look for a while there. III made a darn good adjustment on the matchup zone--split the difference between our 2-3 zone (which Pitt kept driving through in the second half) and the man to man (where we struggled at times with switching on the perimeter). Got the best of both worlds, and Pitt stopped scoring for a reason.

We're only trendy to talk about when we're consistently good. After last year, expect less than stellar coverage. As proof, see the abbreviated Chvotkin call on SC which was basically the only coverage of the game. Did they even mention Austin? If you're a Georgetown guy, how can you even argue this? I didn't watch much else this week in terms of CBB but if John Wall had an irregular bowel movement, that'll get more coverage.

As an addendum, I don't think we've played a team that I think is better than us. I'm a homer and I admit that. I'm also not that flippin' smart and I'm OK with that too. But I've watched a lot of basketball and I don't think I've seen a better team as an opponent yet.

We aren't going to get the coverage of the Dukes, UNCs, Kansases, and Kentuckys so I don't see the point in getting worked up about it.

ESPN can't give the Hoyas coverage tonight because it will only further illustrate to their viewers how much they screwed the pooch tonight by putting a game between two top 15 teams on the U (might as well be on the "Ocho"), while their two flagship networks showed a God-awful UNC team and two Big East non-factors.*
*OK, Cincy is a little better than that. They're a pretty good team, but my point stands.

Question: Are we an underachiever if we put 3 guys on the All-Big East first team but don't win the BE title?

Question: Are we an underachiever if we put 3 guys on the All-Big East first team but don't win the BE title? That depends...does the All-Big East first team still have 10 spots?
