Perimeter defenders are nice, but post defenders are the difference makers, especially in college where perimeter shooting is nowhere at the level of the NBA.

I wouldn't throw Vaughn under the bus. He has improved tremendously but has hit the wall, mostly because he has never seen minutes like this and probably was not conditioned for it. He can adjust over a summer and maybe add more spring to his game. That has been the real problem - athletic, long defenders can bottle him up.

Vaughn actually had some nice put backs and tips to keep possession during the game yesterday and he was diving on the ground (he just gets tired easily but the effort was there, can't say the same for everybody else). But I really think this might be the worst defensive unit at Gtown under JTIII. We started off the season as a very good/good defensive unit so it's frustrating. These kids still don't understand that they will only go as far as their defense. A lot of this is simply focus and effort on the defensive end. I'm all for bringing Moses to the hilltop (as I've already mentioned) because he is athletic, can block shots, and (hopefully) board well in college. Another reason why Rak would be great for this team.

FWIW .. Moses visited the Vols/Pearl on the night they beat #2 Kty and Tenn. fans are claiming they now lead after a great visit. Grain of salt ..
I hope JTIII/Staff can pull this off ... Moses sounds like a Impact player on the defensive end and someone with massive potential of becoming a beast in the post.

From Rivals today:
"We've still got a few trips to make before he makes a decision but Moses told me on the way home that Tennessee was going to be tough to beat. They're probably on top right now."

Nothing a good run in the NCAAs won't cure. Let's not give up yet. He knows he saw the absolute best UT can offer, as time passes, things will come back to a more even level.

This kid is ours. We are not losing him to Tennecheat. I must be honest from the video I saw of him I was not impressed.
Now this Tobias Harris cat....impressive.....Kyrie Irving going to Duke impressive as hades....saw him play vs Tyrone Johnson (a kid we are recruiting)...again I was not impressed by him.

Tobias Harris is a monster....Harlem drinks on you before the BET...where and when?
Sadly we are in agreement in this. We need to get athletes! Too many of our big kids are robots in disguise..meaning it is like watching Omega Supreme transform when they have to slowly gather themselves for a meaningful finish around the tin.
What I would do to have a Varnardo type on this team. Not because he is great but because he is athletic and bouncy!!

it seems like with our offense is better with a taller good slasher/well rounded player (brandon, green, etc). obviously every team wants that, but think that Austin a bit too short and Monroe not good enough enough on the perimeter to make up the difference - hopefully hollis develops into one but hope that these bouncy and skilled players come once in a while...

I truly do not understand what you are trying to say. From my perspective, this year Austin has taken the ball to the hole and finished extremely well, and Monroe's perimeter skills are one of the highlights of his game. He shoots like crap from more than three feet, but he is quite effective on the perimeter. What am I missing?

Greg's handle is not great so he can't drive that well. He can pull it off one on one against bigs but if anyone helps out he's in trouble and his jump shot has not been good this year. I do agree austin's slashing and midrange game has been great.

As Bilas said, Free is like a 6'4 power forward. He is perfect for this offense.
I cringed yesterday when Monroe tried to take it the length of the floor and the ball went flying out of his hands out of bounds for yet another...turnover. At least he dunked it with authority a couple times (he was frustrated).

I think Jester is saying that we need more of the skill set he is talking about distributed throughout the roster, not that Greg isn't suited to spend time on the perimeter creating or that Austin is getting to the rack much more effectively. I have been thinking of this as well.
It seems we function better as a unit (maybe the stat gurus can confirm or deny) on both sides of the ball with length all across the back line. That's my main beef with the 3-guard lineup, whereas I think most of us would like a long, athletic 3. I would certainly argue we are better defensively and on the glass with Jeff and Roy and DaJuan/Brandon/Pat versus Greg and DaJuan/Julian and Austin. More length should (but not always)=easier to recover and easier to grab boards. Hollis and Jerelle have upside here, but we need their offensive games to round into shape as well, which leads to my second point.
On the offensive end, Jeff was wonderful because he was gifted and busted his tail. But he had defenders also having to worry about a cutting brandon, a spot up DaJuan, or an automatic Roy in the paint. Greg does not have that right now. In fact, it is not so much that Greg has the ability to combine Jeff and Roy in one player (which is a remarkable testament to his ability), it is that in our offense right now, he has to be both of them. He is trying to be the point forward, our only legit post threat and a defensive eraser and rebounder. With Julian's back to the basket game having faded and Hollis and Jerelle (and my poor boy Henry) not able to mix it up inside, that is a lot to ask of one guy. Sure, Austin's game has grown by leaps and bounds, but 6'4" doesn't give us the rebounding length.
And it's not as if III and staff don't recognize this. Roscoe on the wing would have been nice, hopefully Goodman pans out. And Nate plus hopefully Walker or Moses gives us a post presence to take the load off Julian or Greg (who I hope returns).
Not a new thought, but we just need more options with more skill up and down the roster. And it is again where the transfers and losss of Braswell hurt.

Stop believing everything you read in Newsday! Perfect for Tennessee bc he can't play a lick of defense. Just ask Jayvaughn Pinkston who torched him for 30 plus a few weeks ago. Or ask Rak Xmas who threw his weak stuff into the crowd on numerous occasions at the Peach Jam. Now...back to our regularly scheduled program....(you know what it is!)
