Thanks to both Dans - Porterfield and McQ. This is the kind of communication that, I think, our community has wanted for some time, particularly on the seminal issues of facilities - MSF and McDonough. May others who work or will work in McDonough take note of this approach. His pitch of a "Training Facility" is well done, when something like a "Practice Facility," in name, might not attract attention from the alumni cocktail crowd. There should be no doubt that this facility will not help us to bring major games on campus, but it will at least give us something and a more significant opportunity to rework McDonough once the training facility is constructed.

Actually, Nevada Hoya beat me to it by about a half hour over on the 37th & O board.

It is extremely important that we develop this proposed facility now, in advance of the public phase of our next capital campaign. I'd be interested to know what exactly "develop" is supposed to mean, in this context. Not that much time left...

When clicking on the link, I only get the GU seal and a blank page... anyone else? On edit: this page is not Firefox compatible... c'mon Georgetown!

I'd be interested to know what exactly "develop" is supposed to mean, in this context. Not that much time left... I won't speak for this project or campaign, but projects in general have to be ready to go when a public campaign is launched--you can't approach eight figure donors with open questions. When do you start construction? When do you commit to finishing it? What is the capital versus operating budget? Will the project use bridge financing (borrowing in advance of gifts received) to stay on target? Are all general contractors, architects, etc. in place if the project goes forward? Are project deliverables set? Are the intra-University and regulatory (ANC) pieces in place? The difference between a transformative gift and a donor walking out the door could come down to one or more of these type of questions. Three words a donor should never hear: "we don't know."In short, Athletics must come to the table with a plan thoroughly vetted in a practical sense, financially and institutionally. It can't show up at the table with a moving target.

If meeting all of those criteria is an absolute requirement, then I don't see how it's going to be ready by the time the next university capital campaign (the sequel to the Third Century Campaign) goes public.

And already Dr. P is communicating more effectively than either of the previous AD's I've known at GU. This is exactly the sort of thing that remedies the consistent "lack of transparency" arguments that people always make when discussing donation levels. If 6 months from now, another letter like this is sent w/ a link to a place to donate for a facility, I would highly bet it ends up a success.

Interesting note - in all of Dr. P's talk of facilities - no mention of the boathouse. I wonder if it's dead.

His pitch of a "Training Facility" is well done, when something like a "Practice Facility," in name, might not attract attention from the alumni cocktail crowd. I reiterate the point that strummer has made time and again that the only way to market this building is to name it "The Allen Iverson 'We Talkin' bout' Practice Facility."

Figure this is the best place to put a comment that doesn't warrant it's own thread.
I really like what they're doing with GuHoyas.com I like the HoyaInsider episodes with interviews of different athletes. They also seem to be utilizing various forms of media better in the past. More highlight videos and more frequent blogging. It's certainly a welcome development.

This doesn't warrant its own thread, and it's not about basketball, but ...
Emailed Dr. Porterfield with a "please make football mildly competitive again", and got a well-reasoned response. I'm a very small-fry donor, but getting a response from him in less than 48 hours (and relatively late at night) continues to speak positively of his efforts.
