I hate to burden the Board with a personal item, but I can’t resist the urge to tell you all that my daughter is an excited and proud member of this year’s incoming freshman class.
She knows the meaning of Hoya Saxa as any freshman should. But as residents of Syracuse, NY I made sure to prepare her for the inevitable question, “what’s a Hoya?” The locals hurl that as if it were a dig. She knows to reply, “It come from the term Hoya Saxa, which is Latin for "you can't spell sucks without SU!"

Nice. LizziebethHoya, class of 2008, also posts on this board and can share similar experiences about being a Hoya from hell, ahem, I mean Syracuse.

My favorite insult from the GU/SU game at the Dome last season was a sign an SU student had saying "YOUR MOM'S A HOYA". I kept asking, how is that an insult? Good work Roman! My dad did the same for me as I grew up in Nova territory. Glad to see it continues

Congratulations. As the equally proud parent of a senior daughter and a sophomore son, I would point out that the best bonding opportunities coincide with Hoya home games.

Cnogratulations! Not to toot a relative's horn either, but my daughter (whose best experience of her accepted student weekend was getting her picture taken with Chris Wright) will be joining yours as an incoming freshman this weekend. She already knows that HoyaChris speaks the truth.

Roman,
As both a Georgtown grad ('81) and long-time Syracuse resident, I often get the same derisive question from Orange fans, "What's a Hoya?" My response (which is always delivered with a smile) is "everything you want to be -- but aren't"
Best of luck to your daughter. Can't wait to see the whole ROMAN family decked out in WAG shirts this February at the Carrier Dome.

I've always like Jahidi Hoya's answer to "What's a Hoya?"
He simply says, "Yes"! Then walks away leaving them dumbfounded!
As for you Hoya parents.. Dan, Chris and Roman.. congratulations! May you all be able to make time to be in DC for some great Hoya Hoops this season. It's going to be a GOOD ONE! I guarantee it!

Roman - huge congrats to a proud parent and to your daughter for excaping the sucking black hole of Syracuse U. As a central New Yorker who actually rooted for the orangeboys back in the 60's and 70's, I was thrilled to see the light when I became a Hoya, and have been thankful every day since. As for the inevitable query, my stock answer has usually been "Someone with brains, good looks and class - three things that will automatically preclude you from attending Syracuse".

What's a Hoya? It's not fruit!
Congrats to all the incoming Hoyas and their families!

It's not there now, granted, but I can see the future and this thread is in serious risk of drifting into the latter stages of CD/BD territory.
;D
Congrats, Roman & Roman's daughter! Go Hoyas!

Make sure she joins Hoya Blue so she can have the pleasure of doing things like buying multiple plush Ottos when home only to deface them and do things like hang them in Red Square and rip them apart during basketball games. I am so jealous of all new Hoyas. I would do anything to be one of them right now.

I graduated in 88 and one of the replies to "What's a Hoya?" I often heard was "Your future employa"
