This is what Giga was talking about. You've basically given all credit for Ashanti and Brandon's improvement, Ray's resurgence, and everything Roy does to III. I'm not saying that III doesn't deserve credit, because he does. However, the players themselves might've played a bit of a role, as well. . SFHoya, to me your post is an example of the kind of generalizations and exagerations that have been posted about this subject. To say that Ashanti and Bowman have improved immensely is accurate. Why did they improve? IMHO it is clearly due to coaching. Putting guys in a system that helps them succeed, teaching them to play a far more disciplined game, and helping all of them gain confidence in their teammates. Heck, even there own interview comments reflect that. That doesn't mean they don't deserve credit too. To use another comparison, no one claims the NE Patriots have the most talent, but they have the most success. Why? because the coaches put the guys in schemes that enable them to succeed, and because they create a team atmosphere that results in a team that is greater than the sum of the individual players talents. Again -- OF COURSE our Hoyas deserve a lot of credit -- for working hard, for being talented, for playing as a team. But the key component is the coach and the tone he sets. T3 has done an amazing job and the players are happy to be playing for him.

I think this discussion is absurd. No one can separate the players from the coaches and vice-versa. The SFSer in me sees a dialectic between the two.

As for whether he improved GU athletics overall, no question. The problem is that very few sports programs are built on the back of track, crew, lax, and sailing (sorry Nevada). The kingpin of the department almost went under on his watch, and he should not be immune from criticism because of it. Though a counterfactual, what would have happened if Esherick didn't open his mouth in mid-March? No offense taken, Jersey. It is just the American way. Track has been having a hard time in American with acceptance (doping scandals, although they have handled it more realistic than any of the pro sports in the US); I don't expect any difference at GU. I am passionate about track (as I am with college bball, namely GU hoops), but I would be lying to myself, if I imagined everybody thought like me.

BD - you need some professional help, man. ;D Things have changed for the better. Things continue to change for the better, on many fronts. We've received a quantum leap in record this year when few of us were expecting it. It's due to many factors, not the least of which are the current coaching staff AND the players left for them by the prior coaching staff. Dan, you can't be surprised to see me write that after the past few years. The man ruined a significant portion of my college and immediate post-college experience. (By significant, it may only be 5%, but it hurts).

I have to strongly disagree with the above posts. Frank Rienzo was not "usurping" Joe Lang's authority. Frank Rienzo (and Jim Higgins) were chosen so as to operate outside traditional administrative channels. Both would have more time for travel and for extended and confidential discussions that a full time athletic director would not. It's also unfair to place blame on Joe Lang in a lot of the Esherick hiring/firing talk. He didn't install him as coach, and while Lang publicly supported Esherick as he would any coach, the big decisions on Esherick's contract came straight from the top. Can we all please remember Lang's great quote about not it not being realistic to be in the NCAA's every year... think that might have had anything to do with it?
