Suffice it to say of all the Editedy fake Italians from New Jersey, Rossi is the worst. Unless he wore an Armani Exchange t-shirt and hair gel, he is clearly not the worst (though I just about summarized the fashion sensibilities of everyone in my high school). Yes, I went to a public high school in NJ. Yes, I'm Italian. Yes, even the non-Italians looked like "My New Haircut". The guido/club/Staten Island image has set back Italians as a people more than any portrayals of La Cosa Nostra ever did.

For the record I dislike that as well. I also have problems with St. Patrick's Day.

Are these games on TV in the US? Yes, on ESPN/ESPN2. The US kicks off against Brazil in about six minutes, and if the Italy game was frustrating this should be a palette-cleanser, as I don't expect the US to seriously threaten Brazil, and a tie would be a fantastic result. Unfortunately, Brazil's recent weakness--shaky backline play--is tough to take advantage of when the USMNT has been having all sorts of problems scoring goals in the run of play themselves.

Thanks - so there are some benefits of waking up this early.

Well, that central midfield role is still up for grabs, considering Ricardo Clark and now Sacha Kljestan have decided to both use their opportunity to showcase themselves in the role to get stupidly sent off. Maurice Edu can't get healthy fast enough, and Jermaine Jones can't get "American" fast enough.
Hate to say it after two Confederation Cup games, especially considering qualification isn't secured yet and everything really comes down to the group draw, but 2010 is more likely to be a repeat of 2006 rather than 2002.

When will Jones be eligible? I think I saw something about a 60 day period? We need to work him in ASAP. Maybe they needed this humiliation to realize that 2002 might as well be 100 years ago....

I saw maybe half the game, what with being at work and co-workers who weren't watching the game doing actual work and a stream that kept going down, but jeez o pete, that was an awful, uninspiring performance. I had good vibes coming off Italy, even with a 3-1 scoreline, but I suspect I'll have to pay good attention to find positives when I get to the DVR tonight.

but I suspect I'll have to pay good attention to find positives when I get to the DVR tonight. Here's a positive: your DVR will have more free space after you delete the game. That was pretty bad. Meh, hit two posts late...Feilhaber's was just unlucky, was an excellent buildup and layoff pass but it hopped on Benny and he still got good action on the ball but it wasn't gonna stay down. Conor Casey's header...well, least they threw in a competent set piece for once lately. And at least this is keeping Casey from playing against DC United on Saturday. Now the question is: does Bradley go with the crazy all-subs kind of lineup against Egypt with basically nothing to play for? Brad Guzan needs a tuneup for Gold Cup after all.

Ok, since I'd already seen half the game, I didn't pay that much attention, or at least not close enough to find many positives.
With Egypt's win today, though, the US could still advance with a Brazil victory over Italy and a win over Egypt. To do so, they'd have to beat Egypt by 3 to make up for that goal differential, and need a net of 7. So, screw defense! Altidore and Casey or Davies up top, Adu, Torres, Dempsey, and Donovan in the midfield with Clark, and a 3-man backline of Spector, Onyewu, and Boca/Demerit! Sure, it'll probably mean getting smoked, but if you want to flame out, flame out interestingly.

nothing is prettier than a well executed backdoor pass.

I like the idea of giving other guys a look. There were some positives in the last two games, I'd like to see get built upon. That being said, there are also a some guys who don't like they are contributing much or are trying to do to much.

Torres must start. Find a place for him before Mexico calls him up because I'm pretty sure he can still jump. He is the kind of creative field player we desperately need. Adu must get at least a half. Sit/rest Donovan maybe and certainly Howard. With players who are stuggling but are not going to lose their spots like Dempsy and Altidore I think you play them because despite their shortcomings they are the best we have and will almost certainly be starting in South Africa- so season them and let them work through this. But Beasly should have seen his last minutes in the red white and blue. Ditto Kletjsen.

Yup, he played in the Cup qualifier at Costa Rica, which was an official FIFA competition and therefore permanently cap-ties him to the United States.
