Sadly, the point in the article that there are people who probably need to be told this is true.

According to the article you linked, the poster was created by a feminist blog, presumably for humor's sake (but what are the odds of anything on a feminist blog being funny?). Some Navy chick then linked to it on an official Navy facebook page and at that point it magically became "OMG A US NAVY POSTER WHISKY TANGO FOXTROT OMG!" Well, that's more of less what I figured, but what's almost funnier than the poster itself, is (A) some of the reactions it elicited and (B) the Navy's response on Facebook, wherein they did not treat it at all as humor. I'll cut the Navy a little slack on their response, since they probably couldn't have posted what they wanted to in response to the "outrage." But not sure why they wanted to go ahead and put the poster on their FB page anyway. Anyone could've seen this coming. Anyway, this is veering a bit away from the normal innocuousness of most Friday Fun Thread links, so I won't keep talking about it. But really, my problems with #8 persist.

I'll cut the Navy a little slack on their response, since they probably couldn't have posted what they wanted to in response to the "outrage." But not sure why they wanted to go ahead and put the poster on their FB page anyway. Anyone could've seen this coming. 1- The responses are horrible, especially the overwrought Tea Party responses (how dare they spend taxpayer dollars on this!) and the poor sad sacks who were themselves raped or had friend(S!) who were raped and really deserve no empathy for it -- one whines about being raped in basic training in 1975, reporting it LAST YEAR, and the Navy has done NOTHING about it. 2- I think the JO who posted this understood the humor, and very few others who even mostly sort of get it can explain why exactly it's funny. The humor is that it takes all of the traditional "Stop Sexual Assault" tropes, which coincidentally are all directives to a potential victim to not be so darn victimizable, and turns them on their head, directing them at assaulter instead. Instead of "watch your drink" and "never leave the house alone" it's "don't drug that person's drink" and, uh, "don't rape someone just because they're alone." 3- Anyone could see this coming. Really? I think the only way we get through the day is by not realizing how terribly below-average most of the people around us. The people reacting adversely to this poster are the same ones up in arms about the Chinese making us dress up in silly costumes and dance for them.

33 years ago last night, a night that will live in infamy, The Star Wars Holiday Special aired. Never forget. On. My. Goodness. I started to watch it and had to turn it off when the 3d hologram psychedelic circus started. After telling my 15 yr old daughter about it she insisted on watching it with me. It was quite funny watching it with someone to mock it. The 1978 commercials were classic.

I realize it's Syracuse week and we should all be focused on fighting and defeating the Orange plague.
However, there is another evil that we are going to have to face soon:
Oh, I am totally seeing this. For the AC-130 scene alone, if nothing else.
;D

So the Andromeda Galaxy isn't nearly as close as I thought. And boy Voyager 1 is REALLY far from home.....

This just totally blew my mind. Felt like a kid again - used to love reading biology, astronomy, etc and learning how things work and fit together.
Very interesting that Y chromosomes are shrinking. Perhaps we should lob that particular grenade over in some of the political threads and then run away . . . .
Also the idea of visible bacteria is just creepy!

This is quite wild. I guess Amazon is the "pneumatic tube" system he contemplated?

Peas as large as beets! Weaklings who don't walk 10 miles! No mosquitoes!
As off as he was on a couple of these, very impressive how close to the mark he nailed a lot of things that weren't even close at the time he wrote this.
