"Shortly thereafter, student anger peaked when an audience member asked if The Hoya’s plan for restructuring would resemble affirmative action. Dozens of students yelled “Ouch! Ouch!” repeatedly, a word the moderators had instructed students to use to express feeling offended at another’s comment." Oh come on bin! That is pure comedy gold! I'm already thinking about ways to integrate "Ouch!" into my daily routine of conversations. Feel like I'm gonna "Ouch!" the crap out of Karl Hess next time he does a GU game. Really, the anecdote above is the funniest thing to come out of the entire saga. Ultimately, if it were up to me, I'd ditch the April Fools issue (not AFI--that's the dudes that recorded "Girls Not Grey") entirely. Not because I necessarily do or don't find it offensive--for me it's all "meh". I'd ditch it because having read it for four years and occasionally since...it's never once been that funny. You're The Hoya. You're not The Onion. In fact, it's not even remotely close. At the end of the day, The Hoya staff is a bunch of college students with varying levels of journalistic experience and credibility. But journalism does not = humor. Two different kinds of writing entirely. So the problem becomes, when The Hoya writes the issue, the authors are dealing with a style none is probably entirely comfortable with. It's the equivalent of just B.S.ing around in your apartment with friends--your humor batting average is probably not that high, and what's more I seriously doubt anyone is exactly coming up with well-timed satire while hanging with your boys. Of course, then when The Hoya tries to get all clever and satirize campus culture AND be funny...it's hit or miss, with the negatives greatly outweighing the positives. It's sort of like the students that are chosen to do the shooting contest at the Verizon Center. Occasionally you get somebody who at least knows their way around Yates, and can comfortably knock down a free throw and drain a three pointer. More often, however, you get the spaz who shot puts the free throw halfway up the backboard, and almost takes out the tuba player with the three point attempt. And they get booed mercilously for it. The problem for The Hoya is, nobody wins 250 bucks if they swish the three. But if they doink it off the tuba player--which they evidently did here--they get "Ouch!"ed instead.

And it all comes fuuuuull circle. (I've calmed down since yesterday.)

AFI look like they write for The Voice, not The Hoya.

While I could chime in with my endorsement of free speech and also comment on how awful that issue was in almost every way, I'd rather point out that I was at Georgetown during the height of campus newspaper satire and humor: the era of The Gonzo. Their April Fool's Day Hoya mentioned -- which I believe gave spawn to the Hoya's current weird attempt -- was absolutely brilliant. I honestly didn't realize that O'Donovan hadn't died until, during the obit, they mentioned he attended a school for the blind and subsequently rose to the head of his class. Also awe-inspiring was the Q&A with God, who had the memorable quote, "As far as I'm concerned, that no-good hippie son of mine got exactly what he deserved!"

The Hoya April Fools day issue had been around before, it had just never been funny until the Gonzo did it. Sadly it hasn't been funny since. Even worse, now apparently half of the campus thinks unfunny and bigoted are the same thing.

Even worse, now apparently half of the campus thinks unfunny and bigoted are the same thing. Bigoted: utterly intolerant of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own. This April Fool's Issue was crass, vulgar, and above all totally unnecessary racial button-pushing. But "intolerant" it was not.

from this week's campus events e-mail:
$500 Grant for Diversity Event from The Hoya Details: The Hoya is donating its profits from its recent April Fools issue to any student or student group to host an event during fall 2009 targeted at raising awareness on issues of diversity at Georgetown. There are no limitations on what the event may be, as long as it concerns issues of diversity on campus and helps contribute to an ongoing dialogue. Interested applicants should send a 500 word maximum proposal to hoyadiversityevent@thehoya.com by April 28th at 12:00 noon. The proposal should describe the event, proposed location of the event, estimated cost of the event, and why the event will increase dialogue on diversity on campus.

The Georgetown men's basketball team brings all students, regardless of creed, color, or political beliefs. I propose a barbeque toasting the history and future of this uniting force. Ideally with a moon bounce. Everyone loves a moon bounce.

Anyway on a more serious note- The provost sent and email out this morning asking for volunteers to join working groups. And because i am feeling either really stupid or really smart this morning, I replied regarding my interest in joining a group. If any of you are still students and are as annoyed by this whole thing as i am i would suggest joining. The more critical voices involved the less annoying the process may be. Ok so enough of my holier than thou crap (for now anyway- ill be heading to the B&G board later), just thought you guys should know and encourage anyone else to join.

All this nonsense bothered me during my 4 years, but it was all very under-the-radar (the accusations of racism). It didn't bubble over until the Jena fiasco the year after I graduated. The GULC kids don't get to play in these University games (not that I'd have the time right now). But good luck suffering through what I'm sure will be mindless and entirely unproductive.
