Isn't anyone going to talk about the Peavy trade? I was actually starting to like Richard, but he doesn't have a Cy Young...
Also, should Kenny make an attempt to keep Peavy on the South Side for, say, the next five years or so?

Peavy is signed for the next three years with a team option for the fourth or maybe two years with an option for the third. I can't remember.

The New York Metropolitans are like a horse that needs to be shot on the track.

Thanks Dan...reading the comment section of that article gave me the biggest laugh I've had in awhile.

Humor, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Methinks that a Hoyatalk poll would show that a vast majority of readers found Cam's remark hilarious.
To quote Abraham Ribicoff, "the truth hurts."

Boy imagine if a fan in Philadelphia had poured a beer on the Cubs center fielder? That'd probably be grounds for an Outside the Lines special on the entire Delaware Valley being evil.
Quite the day between watching Donovan and then Shaneo pelted with beverages from the stands.

Apparently Jared's non-Subway-diet brother is a Cubs fan.

I don't know how, but it looks like the Twins are planning on making a race of it. Jon Rauch is the bullpen guy they should have gotten halfway through LAST year, and while Pavano isn't exactly going to win you a World Series by himself, well, Jeff Weaver. And with Span-Cabrera-Mauer-Morneau-Cuddyer-Kubel as their top 6, they've got one of the best lineups in MLB.
And I bring this up, not because I expect the Twins to make the playoffs, but because I wanted to contrast what they've done since the trade deadline with what the White Sox have done. And I'm interested in hearing what Hoyarooter thinks about the Thome trade. Heard Jayson Stark compare him to Matt Stairs from last year and that's the only use I can see an NL team make of him.

I think Thome is probably good for a couple of key at bats along the way. Also, what about Garland moving dugouts on the night? You wake up wearing one uniform in one dugout and you go to be wearing the uniform in the other dugout.

I'm on vacation, so won't likely be on the board again until next Tuesday. Besides, I'm in mourning.
I thought the Thome trade was a little weird for the Dodgers, since Thome will be nothing more than a very expensive pinch hitter - unless the Dodgers make it to the world series, and then, guess what, they have their DH. So I think that's really why Colletti made the deal.
I really have to laugh about one thing. I wasn't real keen on the Dodgers signing Padilla (although he has pitched pretty well in both of his starts) - until the last two days, when the Giants signed Brad Penny, and the Rockies traded for Jose Contreras. Yep, the same guy whose ERA is about 100000000 over the last month or so. These moves make the Dodgers look like geniuses.

We'll see how Brad Penny for the Giants pans out. That was definitely an eyebrow raiser for me, considering his serious struggles in Boston. But he had some good years for the Dodgers, so he's familiar with the NL West. We seriously need a 5th starter for this stretch drive, as 1-4 (Lincecum, Zito, Cain, Sanchez) have been solid lately, particularly Zito and Sanchez. Also, looks like Big Unit will come off the DL sometime in September to pitch out of the bullpen, something I like a lot. We have a really tough schedule closing out the season, we will definitely need all the help we can get.
The Giants' acquisitions before the deadline to add to our stagnant offense have been pretty bad - Freddy Sanchez has mostly been injured, and Ryan Garko has had one big game but is otherwise batting around .200 for us since the trade. Plus we have Sandoval and Molina hobbled at the moment. Nice. I think number one priority for the Giants in the off-season (outside of keeping our stellar pitching intact) has to be getting a power hitter, then maybe a speedster. But for this season, I think Giants-Rockies for the Wild Card will go down to the wire. From an outside perspective, I don't know who I'd choose.
All the NL divisional races right now look pretty non-existent - unless something drastic occurs, it will be Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers.
(EDIT: OK, I really like the Penny acquisition so far. 8 innings, no runs, Giants beat Phillies 4-0.
Lincecum vs. Pedro tonight, present/future vs. past, should be fun.)

RIP Brad Lidge.
After a full throttle attempt at breaking the blown saves record, Manuel finally did it tonight. Facing bases loaded and one out (of his own doing), Cholly yanks big bad Brad.
Madson closed after Myers threw 1 1/3 scoreless on the other side of Lidge to seal his season-ending fate.

With the rainout today, it sets up a very, very interesting day tomorrow in the AL Central with a doubleheader taking up half of the four games b/w the Twins and Tigers. Can the Tigers save Detroit? Can the Mauer sow up the MVP by leading the Twins and their futility infielder laden roster to the playoffs? Tomorrow may answer those questions. Luckily it's my first day of 1L classes.

I think Mauer has already SEWN up the MVP.
Looks like we're even. I'm sure it won't mean anything, but I'm pulling for the Twinkies (or, to mention the new team moniker I've provided to them, the Vampires).
