Yes a huge fan of the hoyas and personally I have never been to BET. I have attended few Knicks games but never BET. I remember once going to MSG during the BET but didn't have tickets but yes the atmosphere was amazing from the outside and just hanging out around the arena. I only ask the question because other conferences rotate and was wondering if this was ever talked about and not trying to talk down MSG. I guess another reason while watching the ACC tournament several commentators mentioned how empty the Georgia Dome seemed to be during the games. It was dumb of them to put it in the Georgia Dome in the first place just to play nice to GT. And as UNC-VT showed, just because the game is not in Tobacco road doesn't mean the bluebloods won't get preferential treatment. Atlanta is a SEC town in everything, it would be like us moving the BET to Chicago just because we have a secondary part of the market. I know Marquette and Louisville fans complain from time to time about the New York having the lockup, but screw them.

I think that there's an unwritten rule that you have to have been part of the conference for at least a decade to have an opinion. It's like the Big East's version of post count.

It would have to be the bball half, no? We'd have St. John's as a pretty big chip in that debate. Except that Saint Johns has like no fans, and really the fan bases of the catholic schools are significantly smaller than the fan bases of the bigger football schools. If you've ever been to the BET, it's pretty clear that Cuse has far and away the biggest contingent followed by UConn. So, really, if MSG had a say in it, there's a good chance they'd rather have the football schools, and I don't know that the fact that St. Johns plays home games in MSG would mean that MSG would be forced to host their conference tournament and be unable to hold a different conference tournament there. Re: playing it in MSG, it's the best. And the saturday night championship game is the best too. The BET is easily the best of the conference tournaments. I've watched a little of the ACC tourney and it has been comparatively dead. I flipped over to the BC/Duke game, which was tied with about a minute to go, right as Cuse/WVU was going into OT, and it was absolutely night and day. The Big East tourney at the garden, especially during the night games, just has a special feel to it that other conferences cant match. I really don't see the logic behind having it in a dome anyway, just have it in an NBA arena.

And where else can you find fans vomiting in toilets (hopefully) at around 1pm? It is a great college b-ball experience - but I think i would take my kids to an Eagles-Giants game before I took them to a nighttime BET game. But that's OK - there's a time and a place for everything, and kids at a BET night game is neither the time nor the place.

Yeah, why go to New York every year when you could go to such fabulous locations as Newark, Hartford, and Tampa. Not to mention Milwaukee in winter.

There is nothing like the semis and finals of the Big East tournament at MSG.

I have been to 25 BET's including Providence, Hartford, and MSG. MSG is the best, no reason to think about changing it or discuss it. MSG IS the BET. Besides, it's been good to the Hoyas.

Simply put, it's the greatest five (!) days in college basketball. There isn't a better setting out there: not the St. Pete Times Forum, the Georgia Dome, the Conseco Field House, none of them.
I saw every game there I could this week (incl. the 6 OT game and right through the finals) and can't wait to get back.

Additionally, it will always get huge crowds because it is in the middle of the largest population center in the country. The ACC was empty because the metro area has 5.6 mil people (the 33rd largest in the country). New York has 18.8 mil people. The PAC 10 could hold their tournament there and it would get a huge draw (that is sarcasm, just so everyone knows)
If the BE was to split, the Football schools would give the BBall schools MSG and Name as concessions to the split. The football schools are mostly not even traditional BE schools (except Cuse and UCONN) so why would they care. Also MSG is as close to center (population wise) as the BE fan base gets. But if you Just look at the Football schools the center would be somewhere more like WV than NY.

The crowds are not solely because of New York--if it were, the place would be full of SJ, Rutgers, and Hall fans, and none were to be found this week. The schools that travel well (Syr, UConn, even WV of late) help fill the place.
Georgetown does not "travel" well, but that's another topic.

The schools that travel well (Syr, UConn, even WV of late) help fill the place. Georgetown does not "travel" well, but that's another topic. It is a combination of factors. College Basketball fans in NYC Alumni of BE schools in (or near) NYC BE Students who love the idea of a trip to NYC BE Alumni who will take the excuse for a trip to NYC Cuse & UCONN are two of the biggest fan bases. But really, NYC for a college hoops conf. championship? From the best conf. in the country? And you get to take a trip to NYC to boot? with all the great bars, restaurants, shopping for the wives/girlfriends.... easy transportation hub. GU may not have the quantity of fans like Cuse or UCONN -- and when the Johnnies are good a lot of local NYers come out, ND has the subway alumni, but GU got pretty good support in recent years at the BET. There really is no comparison whatsoever to other locations or other conf. tournaments. Anyone and everyone who has ever attended a BET would agree. For those of you who have yet to do so? Next year will be a GREAT Hoya year to be in the Big Apple to watch GU redeem itself! GO HOYAS!!

Three other arenas make sense - the United Center and the Verizon Center. The ACC's done this in the past, as mentioned. So let's examine.
1. Chicago (United Center) - eh. DePaul stinks. Notre Dame is a draw, but Notre Dame's a draw anywhere. Easier haul for Marquette and Louisville.
Chicago holds its own with NYC in shopping, hotel rooms, etc.
2. Boston (TD Banknorth Garden) - Close to Providence and UConn. The biggest college team is a Benedict. Pass.
3. Washington (Verizon Center) - Not a bad option. Georgetown's usually competitive and a draw. Lots of alums from most other schools here. D.C.'s a good transportation hub and has some shopping and lots of tourism options, plus lots of nice places to eat.
But, as has been said repeatedly, why? Why do you junk a tournament in the World's Most Famous Arena, in a city which is essentially the capital of the world, to hold a tourney in the Verizon Center?

"Chicago holds its own with NYC in shopping, hotel rooms, etc."
Except that in New York all of that is withing easy (even drunk!) walking distance from the arena. I take it that you've never been to the United Center.

I know Marquette and Louisville fans complain from time to time about the New York having the lockup, but screw them. Like when? I've never heard or seen any such complaints. On the contrary, from everything I've heard MU and 'Ville fans are thrilled to be able to book their trips to NYC ever year, rather than to Cincinnati or to Memphis, as it was in the days of CUSA.

Im just saying that in NY because there are so many people it is easier to get people to attend an event when in another city there would not be enough people who are interested in going (of course the BET is a huge draw regardless, but if for some reason it wasnt, being in NY would help keep fans in the building because it is more likely that there will SOME people walking around think "ok sure ill head to such and such event")
