Duke has commitments from #2, 14, 20, and 28 on Scout rankings. I'm sorry SF, but that is way better than a "nice class." I think it is unbelievable for 1 school to get 4 players in the Top 30. I agree that Kentucky is off the charts, but Duke has a massive 2011 haul as well. Getting commitments does normally impact how other recruits think about a school. The Duke example you cite to is the exception rather than the rule. It's not unbelievable. Nothing is "unbelievable" when it is not even the best in its year. There's a class like that every year, if not two or three. Using "unbelievable" doesn't make any sense. Also, scout loves the class, but in RSCI - across rankings -- it's not as strong. 1 Top 10, a couple of Top 20s and I think the last is around 60. Lastly, I think the class is overrated, frankly. I admit I'm no guru. but aside from Irving, they all seem ranked a bit high (is Cook really 20 when Markel was like 68?) and taking two PGs in one class dilutes the value. It'll be a Top 5 class, likely a Top 3 for the year according to the rankings. Personally, i think it underachieves. But neither situation leads to "unbelievable." As for the "scare off" thing, I have to put a little friendly jab out there because it seems to me that's your first post after every commit. It strikes me odd every time we get a commit the reaction isn't "yeah!" it's "who will this scare off?" Just me. I know it happens, but...

Your friendly jab is based on a false premise. My first post after the Hopkins signing was "Bingo!" I know you like to parse words like "unbelievable" but Bingo! is pretty darn close to yeah! Duke's 2011 class is a great one. Not a nice one. Stop polishing Duke's proverbial knob. I think you are a troll.

Hey, I wasn't trying to start a war here. I'm sure you're plenty excited about the recruits.
As for Duke's class, agree to disagree.

Rivers is a great player, but one great player doesn't make a class great.
Everyone else in that class is a complementary piece.

If we're going to fight about Duke, can we laugh at their claim we haven't been nationally relevant in years? That and their use of the attendance during the Esherick years to claim Georgetown doesn't have any support is pretty amusing.
The idea that maryland has been more relevant to national basketball recently was my personal favorite.

jersey, I deal with it almost daily from a good friend who is a Duke fan. To him, we're a third-tier program that hasn't done anything of relevance since Reagan was president.
I remind him that despite the fact they won a natty, we thrashed them last season, regardless of what he and other Duke fans think of our program.

Duke fans are so pathetic - they have a 9,000 seat arena on campus which their fans (especially their students) can't fill even when the team is very good - see link below. When Coach K is gone and the team is playing in the NIT, Duke's front running fans will be no where to be seen. Duke fans are like many Yankee fans - most of them disappear when things don't go perfectly for them. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3100960

I still don't know why we get so worked up when Duke comes up. Sure we hate them, but in the way that everyone else does. I guess it's different because GU grads and Duke grads seem to have constant interactions in the workplace and in life, but still. They're not Syracuse or Nova and we're not UNC or UMCP. But drop Duke's name on this board, and a new page sprouts on a thread in an hour.
Don't get me wrong, I like that they're on our schedule, I love beating them, and I hate that they won last year (in a horribly down year for the tourney). I'm just not sure they merit the level of discussion they get on Hoyatalk.

In my defense I was 5 when that happened. But in any case, I don't really get riled up by UMass.

If he commits to Duke, we should pick up interest.

If he commits to Duke, we should pick up interest. Only if we follow the rules set forth by the Dookies. Poaching Austin Rivers = good. "Poaching" Tyler Adams = bad.

Teams like Duke get a lot of coverage on this board because a few members are incapable of allowing objective positive commentary of other programs without attacking the person commenting. I don't see a problem with discussing other programs. Basically, we're familiar with the BE teams and a few outside the conference that compete for the same recruits as we do. That list includes Duke, UNC, OSU, etc... As for Duke, this season will be a nice recruiting case-study on how five/six McD's players at the 1-3 will handle K's distribution of minutes. Former #1 ranked h.s. player Dawkins is not even mentioned by most media and fans. Curry is a proven scoring machine and shouldn't have a problem handling the move to the ACC. Singler can join that group and play the 3. It doesn't let up with the guards coming in 2011. There's a question of toughness at the 4/5 and that's why I think K wanted to poach Nate and had Adams. (Could you imagine Nate learning how to flop? ;D) Duke is one of the best examples of recruiting over in a loaded position. For example, will Thornton feel slighted by the arrival of Rivers or MG? Do you think K cares? Thornton has three choices: 1.) work your butt off and earn the PT; 2.) watch the #1 G in the next class play more than him and be o.k. with it; or 3.) transfer.
