A long time Hoya fan from Pittsburgh. Very frustrated over this seasons developments. I would like to see the Hoyas in the NCAA, but I do not see it happening. Here is why: I see the following teams as bubble teams. Providence, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Southern Cal, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Michigan, BYU, San Diego State, UNLV, and UAB. From this list I think only Oklahoma State, Kentucky, Maryland (unfortunately), and Ohio State making the field of 65. I show the following breakdown by conference. If a conference is not listed then it receives only 1. Big East - 7 Big 12 - 6 PAC 10 - 5 SEC - 5 ACC - 7 A10 - 2 B10 - 7 Mountain West - 3 This also assumes that the Horizon (Butler), West Coast (Gonzaga), A10 (Xavier or Dayton), C-USA (Memphis), MAAC (Siena), and WAC (Utah State) only get one bid. If the team in parenthesis loses then that takes one at large bid away because I think those teams are in. That is why Saturday's loss was so big. The Hoyas needed to finish .500 in the Big East. No worse. Just my opinion. I think they can win tonight and the last 2, but they will lose at Nova. One last comment. Can we please get these guys into the weight room in the off season? They get beat up down low by bigger guys (Blair, etc.). All I am asking for is some Jerome Williams effort. Look forward to hearing any comments.

Barring a near-miracle, I don't think many (if any) around here thinks we're getting into the NCAAs this season, either.

the worst part about NOT making the ncaa's is having to play in the nit
theres nothing worse in sports in my opinion
nobody cares...the players know it
id have no problem with jt3 turning down the bid
its not a postseason tournament

They certainly need some more practice as a team. This year would be the ideal year ( if Greg stays) for the team to go overseas in August. They need the practice time together without worrying about classes. THE NIT would also get them two or three more games. We have the skills to win, we beat Memphis, UCONN and the Twerps. I think the practice time can improve the defense.

While the NIT stinks and is not to be compared to the NCAAs. I think this team, since we return the nucleus next year, could benefit from playing a few games outside the BE and continue the development. The team would likely be a little refreshed to play anyone outside the league, and who knows, maybe we can find something out about a player who not gotten much playing time this year. There will be some decent teams in the NIt, as always, so it is a net plus for a young team that needs to develop.
That said, I am still holding out hope for the NCAAs, we need a 3-1 finish and a few BE wins but why not, a little luck and some timely meshing and maybe we can do it.

In general, the NIT is a lesser tournament and while we can argue the motivational benefits of those actions... I can see the point. However, with this team, they absolutely should go. They need to continue to play and work on things. One of the reasons it's extremely unlikely they will make the NCAAs this year is not just because of losses to Marquette and other good teams, it's the time they didn't come to play against Seton Hall and Cincinnati and West Virginia. The latter two aren't bad teams, but we didn't come to play. The NIT gives the team the opportunity to prove it can go out and play hard and well versus something other than the cream of the crop.

In my mind if we win three of the next four and win at least one game in the BET...because of our SOS and quality wins, I think we are in.

So a 12 seed allows ujs to start against a 3 or 4 seed.

If the Hoyas lose, I think the only way they get to the NCAAs is by winning the BET - or (perhaps) by making a run to the finals.

We had to have two of the three between Marquette, Ville and Nova for us to make it regardless of the BE Tourney. After losing to Marquette, the next four are must wins.
Of course, things can change in the BET, but this is about as must win a regular season game as it gets.

We've given up all margin of error. Our predicted RPI will leave us out unless we (1) sweep the rest of our regular season games, or (2) make a deep run in the Big East tournament with a 8-10 conf mark, or (3) win the BET.

We haven't beaten a Tourney team, even a bubble team, since Syracuse-7 losses in a row. Even if we go 3-1, we could be playing Tuesday as a the 9/10 team, and a win against St. John's or DePaul doesn't really help our resume. I think we need at least 2 wins against legit opponents, or else we're on the outside looking for a lot of help. For the record, Utah State is not getting an at-large bid. Their resume is incredibly thin, and losing to St. Mary's on Saturday killed any minor hopes they had.

IMO
3 of the last 4 and then 2 in the BET would do the job.

I think 4-5 wins overall gets us in based on SOS, I'm not worried about RPI. Our SOS is very high, very few teams if any in the BE have a SOS as high as we do, if we can get 5 wins in any combonation, there is no way were out. We Are

Let's not look at "what ifs" - we need to win all four and at least two - maybe three in the BET - unlikely but possible - if we are not .500 in the league we do not deserve to be in - no team does.

There is long history of teams with sub .500 conference records making the NCAA Tournament so that's not the concern, the concern is our computer numbers. The predicted RPI (43) ain't so hot unless we win all of the last 4.

Whatever your platonic ideals of team quality are, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee doesn't share them. Going 4-0 and losing Wednesday to a bubble team would leave us 9-9 and 18-12 overall. Compare that to Arizona (8-10) or Villanova last year-9-9 in a weaker BE, with nothing non-conference.
