One of the best recruits for the women's XC (and track and field) team is Emily Jones. There is a good interview of her on the recruiting process at www.dyestat.com//?pg=us-Misc-Features-Holzherr-Recruiting-Interviews-Jan-09&PHPSESSID=75be3d8ee2e18b396ac51911124cbeb3Gotta love her quote: I ended up making a verbal commitment to Georgetown University in early October. I felt that Georgetown offered a protected small -chool environment within a large urban setting. I loved how diverse the campus felt and was excited by what it offered academically. There just seemed to be so much happening there! Finally, I also really connected with the coach and team at Georgetown. Coach Chris Miltenberg (at Georgetown) is so excited by what he is doing with his running program. I wanted to be part of that. And: When I found what I thought was the ideal place for me, I found myself wondering, “Why doesn’t everyone want to go there? It’s so perfect!”

Looks like the women are building back up. Top 10 at Terre Haute and now it looks like the recruiting is picking back up. Emily Jones seems like an elite level recruit. I saw that Kirstin Kaspar is also committrd to the Hoyas.

The women seem to be doing better than the men as far as recruiting mid-distance and distance runners.

Womens's recruits: Jones is an elite distance X/C runner on the order of McCafferty/Infeld and would probably be in our top 5 XC as a freshman. Kasper should also be able to contribute as a freshman, though would probably not be expected to make top 5 XC as a frosh(more likely to contribute right away on the track. Stoudenmire would be our top sprinter immediately. Gregory and Schneider would need (moderate/major) improvement in their times to have any immediate impact. The women would benefit from adding someone with really good 400/800 or 800-1500 speed( to replace Maggie Infeld) since the elite distance recruits are really 1500 + types--most of the elite 800 types have already signed so I'm not sure if they will have any luck for this yr.

Reformation, thanks for the update on the women's recruits. Looks like two or three elites in the mix. Now if the men can do half as well.

Reformation, thanks for the update on the women's recruits. Looks like two or three elites in the mix. Now if the men can do half as well. I stand corrected--Rachel Schneider actually has the fastest mile pr of the women recruits. With a small improvement she could contribute right away in the mile--she wouls still need major improvement to contribute in xc and the other track events. As far as the men's recruiting goes there are a couple of elite recruits: Bobby Peavey-distance + Justin Crawford hurdles. Peavey is probably a similar level recruit to a Levi Miller, while Crawford would be roughly similar to a Chris Kinney. The men are reportedly still in contention for a top 800m runner Sadiki Whilte and miler Andrew Springer. The men need to sign a couple of high elite runners at least in order to avoid a big fall off in their traditional strong middle distance corps as their current stars like Bumbalough depart next year.

Good to hear about these recruits. Hope the Hoyas get Whilte and Springer. Dylan Sorensen 15th at Foot Locker signed for the men. He probably has a lot of upside, though has not yet recorded any elite times on the track due to injury in his jr year. Saw an interview with him in which he indicated that he is targeting sub 4:10 for the mile this yr--Its hard to say whether he could contribute right away without seeing what he can actually do on the track--he was moderately recruited-choosing gtwn over Indiana + Syracuse

This just in:
Big news from the Virginia State Meet today. Bobby Peavey of Kellam High School, fresh off PR's last week of 4:12.26 in the 1600 and 2:29.68 in the 1000 at his regional meet, lit up the Boo Williams Sportsplex and set a new state meet record of 4:09.31. The race was an epic one as Anthony Kostelac of Albemarle, who anchored Albemarle's US#5 all-time 4x800 meter relay last night in 1:53, took second in 4:10.xx. The previous meet record was held by none other than current American mile record holder Alan Webb (4:12.11).
The kid has been the model of consistent improvement each year in all events. He dropped his 1600 from 4:34 to 4:25 to 4:18 to 4:09 in his four years and his 3200 from 10:00+ to 9:35 to 9:23 and now to 9:08.

Great news for the men got Andrew Springer, their biggest recruit in a few years-probably since Bumbalough. he has the top time in the US so far this yr for the 2 mile and #2 at the mile. The men now have a pretty good class at 1500-5000, it would be good to see them get an elite recruit in the 400-800. They had lost out to get the country's top 800 recruit Zach Greer(1:47xx) to Oregon.

Springer ran a 9:02.58 in the 2m at the New England Championships. Emily Jones won the women's 2m in 10:35.47. She has the top 2 times in the country this season after running 10:29:57 last week.

Nevada, they look like top notch recruits. You would know better than me but it seems like the women's middle distances should be covered for the next few years with Emily Infeld, Katie Mccafferty and Emily Jones

Of course, we will miss Maggie next year and already are missing Liz Maloy. For a while the men were a worry but in the past week or two they are looking better wtih their recruits. They were very close on a couple of really elites last year and this year (Chris Derrick, Greer to name two).
