The last event of the day was the sprint medley relay. The men finished 16th with a time of 3:25.32 finishing 7th in their heat beating Penn State and Texas A&M. Sean Suber, Chris Kinney, Theon O'Connor, and Danny Harris ran. It must have felt like home for Theon, as they are usually many Jamaican fans for these relays. The Jamaican HS usually take the sprint events (4x100, 4x400).

Congrats to the women for 2 outstanding runs in the 4 X1500 + DMR + breaking the meet & school 4 X 1500 record. The video's of the races and an interview with Tomlin, Infeld sisters , Whalen are up on www. flotrack.org. All of the women either equaled or hit Pr's on the relays which is about all you could ask for. Its great that Christine Whalen has all of a sudden become an elite runner, after struggling with injuries I presume for most of her time at Gtwn. Hopefully the women are able to field their top lineup for another shot at a title in the 4 X8 today. the women would be a bigger underdog to Tennesseee than they were in the 4X1500 or DMR, but they are running in top form so they still have a shot.
The men were pretty much out of the dmr after the first leg which left them about 3-4 seconds behind the leaders. The other legs were comparable to the top few teams. If the men run well they should have a pretty good 4 X 8 today.

Three more women recruits, all sprinters, have been posted: Adetu Lola Sidwell Friends Washington DC Sprints Kimbers Amanda McDonogh High School Baltimore MD Sprints Woodford Ashley Paraclete HS Lancaster CA Sprints These sprint recruits all look pretty goood and add Stoudenmire from the earlier signing they should be a big upgrade for the womens sprint effort. The only thing the men/women are missing in this years recruiting is someone who can really scorch an 800.

Just saw that Hoya recruit Ben Furcht finished second in the 3k in a good time of 8:24--good performance by him.

More word on Andrew Springer, elite recruit for next year:
Being forced to chase the leaders, Andrew Springer (Westerly, RI) would pass through splits of 59-2:01-3:03 and still have a little more ground to make up on Tyler Stutzman (Western Albemarle, VA). It would not be till 150 meter remaining the Springer would get to Stutzman’s shoulder. There was no time to rest as the two fought down the final straight with Springer getting ahead to cross in 10:01.13 a new US #1 for 2009 and the #14 time in US History. Springer would split 4:03.5 for his 1600 meter leg and needed all of that to beat Stutzman who brought Western Albemarle over the line with a total time of 10:01.87 and a 4:07 split fo his own.

Georgetown added an 800 guy from Virginia, Brian Hencke. His pr's are 1:54.5(800), 49.9(400), 2:30 1k. Maybe comparable to someone like an alex bean(coming out of hs) at 400-1000--though slower than Bean at the longer stuff. He could have an impact with improvement.(shld be able to go faster at 800 with his 400/1k times.
Men and women have both recruited elite sprinters + distance people--they still are short on recruits who can really crush a 400/800-maybe we will take some grad student transfers again like Boylan-Pett for the 800 at least.

Westerly sr Andrew Springer almost single-handedly led the Westerly boys to the title. He ran a 1:55 split on his team's winning 4x800 relay (state record 7:55.05), and won the 1500 (record 3:54.02), 800 (1:56.26), and 3000 (record 8:29.35). He scored 30 of his team's 69 and had a hand in 10 more. Westerly also got a shot win from Mike Intrieri (53-03.50)

A couple of other recruits had big pr's in their state meets:
Tenille Stoudenmire 11.7/23.9 for a third/forth placing at the CA state meet--big perf, faster than anyone else on Gtwn's current team.
Kirsten Kasper: 4:49 mile to win the Mass state champ--5 sec for her--she swam rather tha run track in the indoors, so she still probably has a lot of upside relative to some of the other elite runners. For some perspective I think Renee Tomlin ran around 4:49 in hs and was also an all state swimmer, but was a lot faster at 800, maggie Infeld was around 4:47 and I think Emily Infeld was around 4:43. So if Kirsten can improve a couple of sec at the year end meets she would be right in the middle of the comp hs times of our top few mid distance runners. The newsppaer report I saw in her win also indicated that she ran her final lap in 64 sec, which is unbelieveably quick for a hs girl.

It seems every three or four years Georgetown recruits the #1 HS miler in the country. In the recent past it has been Chris Lukezic, then Andrew Bumbalough, and now Andrew Springer in this incoming class. I expect the new Andrew to follow and learn from the "old" Andrew.
We have some good candidates for XC this year, although on the men's side it is harder to make a contribution as a freshman, because of the longer distance in college than in HS (5 miles vs 5K, and at the NCAA, 10K vs 5K). It is a bit easier for the women to make the transition, because the distance is either equal or 1K farther.
