Clark came of age today as a Hoya and Sims took another step toward the same.

Just got back from the game.
We fell behind in the first half for a few reasons: 1) not knocking down open jumpers as has been the case the past few games, 2) Providence's hot shooting from 3, and 3) again, not getting calls on either end of the court (I think we had maybe something like 10 fouls to their 3 in the first half).
What turned it around in the 2nd half? Defensively, we forced a LOT of turnovers in the first 6-8 minutes of the 2nd half, and turned many of them into easy baskets. I thought two guys who played really well today were Jason Clark and Henry Sims. Sims' activity level was high (although I'd like to see him dunk it rather than be cute near the rim), and Clark saved at least 2-3 turnovers by himself on poorly thrown passes... let's just say thank god he has long arms. Greg's thunderous dunk at 49-44 really got the crowd amped until we finished the 15-0 run. Chris and Austin shot much better (as a result of getting a LOT of easy baskets in the paint), but Jessie... the slump has continued. Clark came in really early today and I assume that will be the case until Jessie turns it around.
Negatives today: Inability to break the press, especially late in the game. Chris not demanding the ball in transition, which led to some unnecessary turnovers. Inability to inbound the ball (aside from one find inside to Austin for layup, can we do a little bit better than just inbounding the length of the court when we are under the opponents' basket?). The non-student crowd: can we please stand up when it's a 1 possession game with a minute half to go? Pretty please? And to the group of about 10-15 students (mainly girls) who left at the 5 minute mark: stay home next time. That's pathetic.
Overall, another gutty win which has been our MO against Providence recently (i.e. weather their early hot shooting and counter with a big second half run before holding on). We can't assume our offense has completely recovered, because Providence had no interest in guarding anyone, especially late, so a focus on executing the offense will be crucial before our next two games.

sleepy....i disagree.....we should have hammered PC, they played a very passive match-up zone, and allows Greg to do what he wanted in there passing wise when they came to double....I like that we overcame their hot start and won but we should be 15 pts better than this team....I agree with what someone said earlier. For a bunch of guys who are reasonably good shooter, they have got to pick up the 3pt shooting, cause teams are going to keep packing it in with more size than what PC has. Austin has got to get it going from the outside, Jessie too. The positive was probably that they took the lead and expanded it with out DaJuan. Herny and Monroe look like the enjoy playing with one and another. IT will be interesting to see against THAT team next game how we match-up with their bigs of Onauku and Jackson. Cause jackson is one of those lunch-pail get after guys like Blair is, and will push and force himself into the play to get a board and wont"stay" boxed out. With the way we are playing right now we shouldn't expect to hammer anyone, let alone a team that is 3-0 in the Big East, despite who those three wins are against. This Providence team is better than the Providence team we beat last year, and we didn't hammer that team either. Like I said I didn't see the game, but the fact that we were able to comeback from a double digit deficit means a lot right now, no matter who it was against. Sadly I am not sure if Freeman or Sapp will improve their three point shooting, because the problem is more than just a "slump".

one positive is that, apart from one or two possessions where we allowed Randall "Panky" Hanke to get 2 offensive rebounds and a putback, we went toe-to-toe with a good offensive rebounding team and won the overall rebounding matchup by 9.

thats kinda what i was getting at "how we are playing right now" PC played 0 defense in reality, and we could have stomped them out much earlier, and not let them back into the game late. 2-3 passes and they thought their job was done. i see them becoming the new Notre Dame very soon, live and die by the 3.

Did Omar get any run in this game? I didn't see him in the box score. Any particular reasoning? He's earned at least some PT and considering how much he was contributing earlier in the year I find it strange that he wouldn't get any. I know that Sims has been taking a lot more minutes the last couple games and we have stressed rebounding with Sims in there, so is it that Sims has taken Omar's minutes? Do you think he'll get in there more again in the future? I like seeing a kid working that hard get rewarded and I think he does add a lot of hustle and effort and occasional 3 point shots, but I also like what I'm seeing from Sims. Sims has obviously been working hard too.

I saw from the gametracker that Jansen got in during the first half. What was that about? Has he been having good practice sessions?

Really thought GU set the stage for the comeback at the end of the first half, doing three things:
1. Getting after loose balls--and converting a few cheapy baskets
2. Made a couple of solid defensive stops
3. Began to go through Monroe in the halfcourt offense
These three things carried over into the second half and allowed us to go on the 21-2 that put the game to a comfortable (just barely, it turned out) margin.

exactly Nevada (or at least I think i know what you are getting at)...if things go according to plan, Omar will see less and less minutes because our top recruits and the guys we need to go all the way will be coming into their own. Omar is settling into where he should be, our 8th man -- he can seen minutes when necessary but Henry and Jason should round out our solid 7 (Vaughn as 8) man rotation as we come down the stretch.

49 point second half by GU. The boys got after it.
And I agree about Clark and Sims becoming our 6th and 7th men as the season progresses. Both looked good today.

What was the deal with the prolonged delay with 58 seconds left in the game - what were the refs reviewing?
Huge shout out to the student sections for the longest "We Are" - "Georgetown" chant I have ever witnessed during this prolonged delay!!!

My arm was about to fall off after that We Are Georgetown cheer at the end. I'd also like to know what the delay was for.
Aside from our spurt in the middle of the 2nd half, we played pretty lousy today. Lots of turnovers, sloppy play, and silly fouls.
Sims had his best game yet - the team actually played better when he was in the game and DaJuan was on the bench. It looks like he's really starting to find his place out there, and he looks a lot more confident. Jason Clark also continued his solid form - he's the sort of guy who does the little things well.

Keno Davis was arguing that the clock did not start after the Hoya bucket so it was not a legitimate possession when their guard lost his dribble out of bounds. He was wrong, but it took like 4 minutes to clarify.

Rockaway makes a great point about the non-student fans: Wake up and get into the game! I am sick of standing on my own at obviously crucial parts of the contest!
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but it is maddening!

I agree with all of that. Greg alone had 5 turnovers, a couple of which occured when he just wasn't paying attention. Chris also had a sloppy game. It seemed almost impossible to inbound the ball through/over Hanke. Yes, a W, but not a "solid" one in my book. Jason and Henry were very good, though Henry missed two layups on unforced errors (and his teammates missed at least that many more). It's especially good to see Henry improve. Austin was clearly our best offensive player today throughout the game, though DaJuan was our best in the first half. At times on offense, we literally looked like we didn't know what to do. We were not prepared for this game, and Providence was. We have the superior talent and we took it, but unimpressively. added on edit: We don't seem to have anyone we can count on to nail free throws consistently, like we could with Jon. I thought Austin was going to be that guy, but he's been shaky lately. As a team we shot 60-something percent for the game, a little below what one should expect of an elite team, but not horrible. But it concerns me that we don't have anyone who seems confident and consistent.

btw this, in my mind this game was nearly identical to the Providence game last season. We weathered an early hot shooting run to fight back with lots of gutty plays.
A much needed win
