Since this is an obvious issue, my hopes are that after tonights game, we can start working on the bench in some of our lower profile games.
Clark should be getting more minutes period. He is not a liability on Offense and he plays really solid D. The only knock could be his size (lack of weight) but I think his length makes up for this. I would rather see him then Omar.
Vaughan needs to be an integral part. He is a big that is comfortable playing as a big. His O is a liability at this point, but his D and rebounding effort are there.
Wattad makes me really nervous. He seems to be a foul machine and when he is guarding on the wing, his guys frequently drive right by him. I don't think it is a lack of effort, but I just don't see the foot speed. He had three awful possessions during Pitts run on Saturday.
Sims is clearly rail thin but I liked that he was brought in during the first half of the Pitt game. He presents a mismatch for other teams and if they can get him to mix it up inside, he might settle down when he is out there.
I think we can get through most of the BE without this being a major issue but come BE Tourney and NCAA Tourney, we are going to run out of steam at the current pace.

I'm with you on Clark for sure. I hope JT3 has Vaughn running his behind off in practice. He looks really sluggish to me on the floor like he's carrying a little more weight than he's accustomed to or just generally not in game shape. Can't even comment on Sims as he's seen so little PT and I'm with you on Omar. I sorta like Omar as a spot up shooter but other than that, totally lacks footspeed/agility. He's almost the opposite of Jeremiah but not good enough on offense to counteract JR's defense but better on defense than JR was on offense (who's not really?)
Regardless... would love to see Clark get significant minutes especially since Jessie seems to be struggling.

I'm not sure why Clark isn't getting more minutes - he is the only guy off the bench who has shown himself to be ready for the BE at this point. Wattad was atrocious against Pitt (terrible pass out of bounds, airball 3, blown by on D), Vaughn simply doesn't contribute when he is out there, and Sims has talent but doesn't seem ready at this point.
Clark actually contributes something, while with the other three we are just hoping to get by for a few minutes.

He loses his man way too often, something that can't really happen if he's on McAlareny (or, really, any of the Irish shooters)

I think we need to keep giving Omar mins. We need to take the good with the bad. He is a good shooter, but streaky at least until he gets his confidence up. But he could be a zone buster for us if he is hot. Clark - agree on all points, more time = more confidence. Vaughn - def need to keep giving him time. Perhaps give him some more time with monroe, so he doesn't have to carry the offense he can just concentrate on defense and rebounding. Sims - I really think he is a lost cause this year. he looks totally lost out there.

I think the fact JTIII gave Sims sometime in the Pitt game is a good sign. I think it means he is improving in practice, and he didn't do anything poorly against Pitt, so hopefully he will get some more time tonight. We will see, but I think he going to be more of a contributer come late February.

Give Omar and Clark more minutes. Take away some from Sapp. I love Sapp but he is in a mega-rut and HAS NOT been productive especially considering the amount of minutes he's getting. Give Omar and Jason more and see if it causes a spark. In addition, I don't beleive you can blame Omar for getting burnt on one possession by Brown, when immediately prior to the play he was pinching helpside on Blair. You can point out the fault that he turned Brown the wrong direction with his defensive positioning once he made the rotation after pinching down on Blair.( who neither Greg Dajuan nor julian could stop btw). Also as far as his bad passes those were very uncharacteristic and also involved Julian Vaughn not rotating to the correct space in one of the two incidents; Granted Omar shouldn't throw the ball to a spot but in his defense he ran the play correctly julian was out of place. Still the guard is responsible for not throwing the ball to empty space, even if the big failed to rotate correctly. The airball was ugly. Didn't even look like he looked at the goal before jacking it up. Clark is great on D, but still not convinced about his O. (what did he do really, have a run out garbage dunk to end the game?). But right now I want both getting more minutes. If you want Omar/Jason/Sapp chasing around wings on the perimeter without being "a step behind" you'd better be willing to live with no help defense down low. Pick your poison, and I agree, the poison should be based on the opponent (i.e. if they're shooters are good dont pinch with the guard on defense, but if they cant shoot, pinch to help the bigs on D).

I would like to see GTIII use all of Julian’s fouls tonight. But he only uses him to rest or eat minutes for Greg. I guess there is something that JTIII sees different than what we see in Julian.
Jason has really hustled and played well when he is in there. He also is really good and comfortable on the boards for a guard. I would like to see him get more minutes, but not at the expense of Chris or Austin.

If Sapp hasn't been productive, what has Omar been? Look, I'm pleasantly surprised that he is even getting on the floor, but right now he is a shooter that can't shoot. He had one good game (Tenn) and outside of that is 4/24 from three. He doesn't contribute nearly enough otherwise to deserve minutes if he isn't making 3s. We don't have much of a choice but whenever possible I'd rather see Clark getting his time - or Sapp.

I agree with hoyaboy 100%. I really have no clue why Omar is getting so much run. He hit three 3s against TN. that's it. From what I can tell, while he tries hard on defense, he is not even above-average defender...he cannot rebound a lick and he doesn't seem to be especially adept passing the ball. he is basically a square-up shooter if he has a wide open space. i don't think we need that as much as we need quickness and hops on D...something that Clark potentially provides more of than OW.

"he cannot rebound a lick"
He's had more rebounds this season than Vaughn and Sims and about the same as clark.

Yeah, Omar had been one of our better D rebounders, statistically: HP

well if you look at averages, he has less per his actual minutes than everyone but sims...additionally, i was addressing the OW vs. JC differential really, but thanks for your input.
regardless, i am just going by watching the games and he doesn't seem able to provide us with any substantive contribution when it comes to fighting for interior rebounds...maybe saying not able to rebound a lick is a bit extreme, but i just don't see it with OW...
edit: sorry those hoya prospectus numbers don't really mean anything to me without some kind of narrative. i am a litigator and we have experts for pesky numbers

1. I would like to see Vaughn and Monroe on the floor together at some point.
2. Wattad laid an egg against Pitt but otherwise I think he's been ok. I disagree with his defense being that bad - he drew some nice charges against Memphis and has shown good positioning. Foot speed is not the best, but I can live with that if he hits 3s and doesn't turn the ball over.
3. Love Clark, fine with him getting more minutes if circumstances call for it.
4. I think the idea that we will "wear down" during the season is overblown. I'm all for giving guys a few minutes rest here and there but I would prefer JTIII to max our starting 5 as much as possible each game, with subs only when people (1) need rest, (2) are in foul trouble or (3) can take advantage of certain match-ups.

Actually I'd prefer if we waited a bit until after the Cuse/Duke/WVU stretch next week to start tinkering some more with the bench. The good thing about our schedule is that its so top heavy that if any of the guys start clicking in February, they'll have a much easier go at it.
