Jelan is playing in the Summer Jam in Milwaukee right now instead of playing in Memphis. He is playing with his hoops planet AAU team. They lost their first game by 10.
Per NY2LA at the Summer Jam:
JELAN KENDRICK 6’6 GUARD – HOOP PLANET
Talented guard is a leader in every sense of the word. His Hoop Planet team has been on the losing end of a couple close contests here in the NY2LASports.com Summer Jam and Kendrick is making it a point to get his team together after every game and talk about what they are doing well and what they need to do better. A positive competitor, his energy on the court is tremendous, and his desire to win is second to none. With a host of elite college head coaches looking on, Kendrick showed a quick dribble and burst and some serious hang-time around the cup on his way to two 25+ performances on day two.

Jalen's team got knocked out of the tourny. Don't think they won a game, but he played at a very high level. Just did not have the horses with him. He showed a great maturity and leadership even with the tough situation. Jalen's demeanor is a lot like Markel's, great to have.

JT3 has been in Wisconsin the last 2 days watching Jelan play. JT3 has also been watching Brandon Dawson (2011 wing).

Just out of curiosity, where do we stand with Dawson?

In an update on Rivals, Jerry Meyer conjectures that Georgia Tech, Georgetown, Texas and Kentucky will be high on Kendrick's list when he releases it later this summer.

From ESPN (GBOA Challenge):
"Surprise player Jelan Kendrick is the top senior in the state of Georgia. Kendrick has been gaining notoriety this spring and deservedly so. He has improved immensely since I saw him last at the 2008 Pangos All-American Camp. Due to his wiry frame and extraordinary long arms his game has a Chris Douglas Roberts (New Jersey Nets) feel to it. He is quite slick with the ball in his hands and is a very smooth scorer. He has swift crossover to separate from defenders, and he can finish with either hand around the basket or nail the pull-up. His jump shot is consistent out to the stripe and his release is feathery. Kendrick needs to get stronger and not hunt for his shot so often, but he is certainly one of the top prospects in the country with a high ceiling."

Tech since its local, Texas, because they have been very HOT in the recruiting circles as of late and Kentucky for obviou$ rea$on$. he's my favorite in this class so trying not get my hopes up too high.

Has had home visits from Kentucky, Memphis, Georgia, Florida International, Oregon, Georgetown and Cincinnati, according to Scout. Not the most impressive list...interestingly, Kentucky just took a commitment from a wing (Stacey Poole) that is similar in size to Kendrick.

Kendrick recently met with the Indiana coach staff (his cousin, AJ Moye, used to play for the Hoosiers). In my opinion, he is the one remaining player in this class I would want most(watch out for Georgia Tech). He's a stud. From rivals:
"They actually came to the school, came to Wheeler High School)," said father Lonnie Kendrick via phone last evening. "It went well." . . . Edited. Do not post subscription material.-Admin

Jelan was at IU this past weekend. It looks like it is down to us, IU and GTech. Let's just hope Rivers didn't get into his head during his visit! (anyway, my understanding is he is closer to our guys, particularly our 2010 guys) than the IU team.

The writeup of Jelan's visit to IU in Scout was pretty ho hum. The writeup and comments from the kid did not come across as a home run - nothing bad just minimal wow factor. GT is now down to 3 or 4 targets for 2010 without any success to date and this is a local kid. Hewitt has been focusing his recruiting on local kids so I would look for them to make a major push here.

Really? I thought this sounded pretty good: The Hoyas have long been considered a strong player in his recruitment. "Georgetown had been recruiting me when I first came onto the circuit and a lot of people didn't know about me. They believed in when and thought I had star potential from the get go.
"What's special is that me and the coaches have bonded so well that when I get a chance to go up there and hang with them they're real calm like we're some sort of family."

Quote above is from Dave Telep - titled "Kendrick likely will sign late" (subscription article): tinyurl.com/yjdn6nvApparently expected to sign in the Spring, which could be good for the Hoyas.

Great sign for us that he is signing late.
Jelan is taking his third official visit this weekend. He is going to Bama to see the Bama-LSU football game (this is his 2nd trip there - he already took an unofficial there).
He officially visited Indiana last weekend, and he visited us officially the weekend before that.
Looks like he wants to see a good football match-up this weekend.

Guess not. Kendrick commits to Memphis.
Picked PT over winning, IMO.

Very very strange decision to me. You would think he would wait to see how Pastner did since he was already considering waiting until the Spring. My understanding of Kendrick is that he's an extremely good player, but not a 1 and done lottery pick lock. Why would you go ahead and commit to a coach who has not coached before if you weren't?
I really wanted him and it sounded like he would be perfect for us. But for some reason I'm not as upset as if he would have gone to IU. I guess I just feel like Memphis and we don't offer the same things to a recruit. Still this sucks. Hopefully the momentum on Roscoe changes because it would not be great to come away with only 2 of our targets for 2010.

Pretty sure Kendrick thinks of himself as one and done -- and a lot of people do, too -- and whether or not it is true, the rumor is he was concerned about coming to GU with Wright and Freeman still here.

What PT. You got Robert Sallie, Witherspoon, EMail, Will Barton, Chris Crawford, Joe Jackson and Kendrick....all of whom want to play in the backcourt. Head scratcher.
