I actually have not gotten their new album yet. I was going to buy it last night, but forgot until the end and then the merch table was mobbed and I, being mostly sober, was not in any mood to hang around with the kids. I heard them play some of their new songs, and they were very good live. But TDCC is always very good live (my third time seeing them; first two were short sets at festivals; wish I had seen them when they were touring with Phoenix, but I missed that). So, I can't really assess old vs. new very well for you. As for the show itself, it was excellent. They are a band full of energy and they had a really impressive, almost Miike Snow-like, light show (which actually makes a pretty big difference). They pretty much played Tourist History in its entirety, along with a few new songs. They're not the most technically sound band in the world. They're still pretty young and new to headline touring, and there were a few glitches throughout the show. But they more than make up for that with their energy & enthusiasm. If you like their music in studio, I'd say definitely catch them live if you can. They run through the show pretty quick, about 75 minutes, but that's pretty good for a still young band. Didn't get to go to the show and I'm pretty upset about it. Had really gotten into them lately.

Nasar Abadey and his working band, Supernova, at An die Musik in Baltimore. Abadey on drums, James King on bass, Joe Ford on alto, and Allyn Johnson on piano. Outstanding music!

Any opinions about the Kendrick Lamar/Imagine Dragons mashup on the grammys? Great to see that kind of energy. Don't know either act all that well (have heard a couple of ID songs and have heard of KL but not any of his stuff), but nice to see artists not go through the motions on an award show.

It's Jazz Fest time here in New Orleans. Friends, family, food, music. What could be better?

Finished off the Fest with Bobby Womack, Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard, and Trombone Shorty. Great times!

Young and talented tenor sax man Jimmy Greene just released his new album, Beautiful Life. Years back, Greene finished second in the ultra-prestigious Thelonious Monk competition to jump start his career. Now at the peak of his musical talents, he is joined on this incredible album by an outstanding rhythm section: Renee Rosnes, Christian McBride, and Lewis Nash. Also sitting in on various tunes are jazz luminaries Kurt Elling, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, Latanya Farrell, and Kenny Barron, as well as long-time friend and first winner of The Voice TV show, Javier Colon. Finally, incomparable guitarist Pat Metheny sits in on the album's first tune.
But what completely set this remarkable album and artist apart is the backstory. It is Greene's personal and uplifting tribute to his daughter Ana, who died at the age of six in the unspeakable tragedy at the Sandy Hook School in CT two years ago.
In Jimmy's own words: "My daughter Ana was born on a Tuesday morning in early April 2006. Her life was ended in her first grade classroom on a Friday morning in mid-December -- six years, eight months and ten days later.... Much attention has been paid to the way my precious Ana died, but this album attempts to paint the picture of how she lived -- lovingly, faithfully and joyfully. In a way, this recording also represents a reaction. Not a reaction to the discourse sparked by the events of December 14, 2012, but rather the reaction of a father after having witnessed a miracle -- the miracle of his daughter's beautiful life.
If you have a chance to check out this beautiful album, or see Jimmy Greene in person, you will not be disappointed. I will never cease to be amazed at the talent and inspiration our musicians possess and share with us. Thank the lord for them.

Have yet to see him live, so he is on my don't miss list. I have Mission Statement, and will acquire Beautiful Life shortly. I got Nash's Highest Mountain strictly because Greene is a sideman on that CD. I first heard him on CD as a sideman. Really tragic about his daughter. I had read that somewhere on the interwebs. Greene is one of my favorites of the younger tenor players out there. Also, love it when Elling features on a CD. Looking forward to getting this.

Cape Town, South African vocalist and guitarist, Jonathan Butler was outstanding in a free concert at Lawless Chapel on the campus of Dillard University. The concert was sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation to honor Dr. Martin Luther King. Wonderfully spiritual music. The Dillard University Choir and the New Orleans Nu Legends, consisting of Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Max Moran on bass, Donald Harrison on alto, David Torkanowsky on piano, and the great Herlin Riley on drums performed as well.

Just found this - first concert I ever went to (I was 12 years old) - clearly the internet has EVERYTHING.
Hard to replicate this these days.

Dr. Michael White, Terence Blanchard, and Charles LLoyd at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Heard a little Elton John, but that stage was far too crowded.

The Grateful Dead the last two nights. Trey was made to front that band. Amazing.

Was more of a Jerry Garcia fan than the Dead but for the first time the band felt just about there with Trey up there. I bot the PPV on Friday and Sunday. Scarlet Begonias was something else. As always, I can always use less Lesh singing but I understand he's more than earned his right to do so. I've never seen the need for Drums/Space but like I said I'm not really a dead head so much as a huge fan of the Jerry Garcia sung Dead songs and the JGB.
Songs you guys wanted to hear but did not over the 3 nights? I was sure they would play He's Gone last night, a personal favorite but no can do. Also really wanted me some Sugaree, Morning Dew, Wharf Rat and Going Down the Road Feelin Bad and was surprised not to see those in Chicago which I hoped the band would treat totally independently of the late added California shows.
Looks like I really wanted the June 2 Santa Clara setlist. This looks like the strongest one by far to my tastes.
“Feel Like a Stranger” / “New Minglewood Blues” / “Brown-Eyed Women” / “Loose Lucy” / “Loser” / “Row Jimmy” / “Alabama Getaway” / “Black Peter” / “Hell in a Bucket” / “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo” / “Wharf Rat” / “Eyes of the World” / “He’s Gone” / “Drums / Space” / “I Need a Miracle” / “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” / “Sugar Magnolia” / Encore: “Brokedown Palace”
