I had a great time at the Newport (RI) Jazz Festival this weekend, an event that was started in 1954.
Some outstanding jazz as usual, and concluded with Blues/Rock band Tedeschi-Trucks. What a GREAT show they put on. Derrick Trucks is an outstanding slide guitarist and his wife Susan Tedeschi also plays a great guitar and is the heir apparent to Bonnie Raitt in the female, blues-rock singer category. This 11 member band puts on an awesome concert. If you get a chance to see them somewhere, do.

Things I learned and/or confirmed from Lollapalooza 2012: 1. I am too old for Lollapalooza. ;D 2. When trying to babysit 10 grown men for a bachelor party weekend at a music festival, bring two-way radios because cell service is going to suck, and it's OK to punch the ones who are acting like whiny little girls (I didn't, but it was close and I would've been justified). 3. Metric is one of the best live bands going and Emily Haines...just the dead sexiest performer out there. 4. You can keep your Adeles, your Ellie Gouldings, and all of your other pop divas with great voices. None of them can hold a candle to Florence Welch. Do yourself a favor and see her sing someday soon. You will not regret it. 5. The Walkmen still like to say they're from D.C., which is very cool, but kind of odd, since they all live in NYC now. 6. Jack White may be a genius, but he needs someone to rein him in. He's all over the place. 7. Best early acts: GIVERS, Animal Kingdom, Yellow Ostrich. 8. Bands like M83 and Miike Snow I love, but they are best seen in a small dark arena, not in a ginormous park at dusk. Their light shows are an integral part of their performances, but something gets lost in the outdoor setting. 9. Perry Ferrell may still be one of the coolest people alive. Aside from Metric, the aftershow with Franz Ferdinand and Jane's Addiction was hands down the best concert of the weekend. 10. Stay away from the DJ stage. Particularly after a hurricane rolls through town and everything gets muddy. Don't you ravers believe in showers? The only negative was that Temper Trap got cancelled because of the storm. But I've seen them before and will see them again (with a lot fewer than 70,000 people surrounding me), so not too upset about that.

Seeing Two Door Cinema Club, Matt & Kim and Major Lazer at 9:30 this fall. Any thoughts? Never seen any of them live.

I have seen the first two. They're tons of fun on a bun. Matt & Kim are a little too twee for me, but they're still a good show. I'll be at the 2DCC concert too.
Haven't seen Major Lazer.

Just got back from a great free Weezer concert at The Warner Theater.
Sure, it was kind of a downer to have the whole thing sponsored by Microsoft, but:
- Microsoft actually put on a great event, with free food and water, lots of giveaways and door prizes that included five guitars signed by the band.
- In the middle of their set, Rivers Cuomo went off on a totally ad lib tongue-in-cheek riff about the whole sponsorship deal (singing, at one point, "I f**king love Excel spreadsheets!!"). It was pretty funny.
Overall, I still miss Matt Sharp and don't think there'll ever be a reunion, but the band is still pretty solid, playing for about 80 minutes and selecting songs from their whole career, not just new stuff or just stuff from Blue. And Rivers Cuomo's sardonic wit was present throughout, asking at the end before playing Buddy Holly if anyone had a guitar for him to play, since he gave away five.
Good stuff and a nice way to spend Saturday afternoon.

About 10 days ago went to a similar corporate gig featuring Train. Our health system held an outdoor concert in a wheat field, the site of our future new half billion dollar medical center in Fargo, free for staff and guests. 15 thousand people there for the show. Great atmosphere. Full moon behind the stage, sun setting, and mass of humanity stretched across the wheat.
Lots of songs I knew, but before show I don't if I would have paid to see them. After the show, yeah, I definitely would.
Overall, a great show by a fun, sing-along-able American pop band.

After all the phenomenal reviews lately, I hope Bruce leaves something in the tank for the DC show in a few weeks. Seeing Rush a few nights before as well.

After all the phenomenal reviews lately, I hope Bruce leaves something in the tank for the DC show in a few weeks. Seeing Rush a few nights before as well. I don't think you have much to worry about on that front. It's no secret that I am not the world's biggest fan of The Boss's music, though I respect both his influence and legacy. But if nothing else, I do hold him in high regard for how he treats his fans. Even though his concerts are outlandishly expensive these days (goddam 1-percenter!!!), Bruce Springsteen has always, for his entire career, given his fans their money's worth and much more. Epic 3+ hour concerts are rarities for most artists (who are established enough to be able to do such a long show). For him, they are the rule rather than the exception. (I should add that I love that Robert Smith is also among the "my fans are paying for a show...I'm gonna give them a SHOW!" group.)

I've seen Bruce before. I'm just hoping he saves something for us after 4 hour shows in Europe last month and busting out stuff for other cities

Saw Pretty Lights finally this weekend, I've wanted to for about 3 years. Probably one of the best light shows I've ever seen and it helped that the concert was at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. If anyone gets a chance to see any show there, I strongly urge you to do it! Incredible venue not only for the sights but it also has great acoustics as well.

Dan... thanks for the on site reports on the new E Street Band and the Boss' latest tour. I sure wish I could catch up with them somewhere along the way. It's been quite a while since i've seen them live. One of the BEST live performers in Rock history.

We Are Alive - Bruce Springsteen at Sixty-twoFor Springsteen fans, the New Yorker ran an outstanding piece on Bruce a few weeks ago by writer David Remnick. It's long. When you have a few minutes to devote to reading, check it out. Nearly half a century ago, when Elvis Presley was filming “Harum Scarum” and “Help!” was on the charts, a moody, father-haunted, yet uncannily charismatic Shore rat named Bruce Springsteen was building a small reputation around central Jersey as a guitar player in a band called the Castiles.

I, unfortunately, saw a stinker. Alto player Sonny Simmons, who approaches 80 yrs of age and who has lived a tough life at times, truly did not have it. The fire is out, at least for the show I saw.

Saw Bruce at Citizens Bank Park over Labor Day weekend. From the Summertime Blues opener to the Twist and Shout close he put on one hell of a 33 song, 3 1/2 hour show. He is simply anazing.

Boz, please spill some details about the TDCC concert you mentioned in the election thread!
Two Door has been my favorite new band, but I was slightly disappointed in the new TDCC album. Love the first one, like the second one. I just think it feels like maybe they took themselves a little too seriously and left out some fun. The best tracks on the new album are the live tracks of the old songs, so I'm curious about the way the new songs sounded and how the band looked live.
Now when I got the new Satellite Stories album I instantly fell for its quirky Finnish-accented, odd English lyrics with all the fun alt pop goodness of the first Two Door album. Of course, Sat Stories is basically the Finnish clone/knockoff of TDCC, but the new album exceeded the very high expectations I had after listening to the EP. I think the new track "Sirens" is genius.

I actually have not gotten their new album yet. I was going to buy it last night, but forgot until the end and then the merch table was mobbed and I, being mostly sober, was not in any mood to hang around with the kids.
I heard them play some of their new songs, and they were very good live. But TDCC is always very good live (my third time seeing them; first two were short sets at festivals; wish I had seen them when they were touring with Phoenix, but I missed that).
So, I can't really assess old vs. new very well for you. As for the show itself, it was excellent. They are a band full of energy and they had a really impressive, almost Miike Snow-like, light show (which actually makes a pretty big difference).
They pretty much played Tourist History in its entirety, along with a few new songs.
They're not the most technically sound band in the world. They're still pretty young and new to headline touring, and there were a few glitches throughout the show. But they more than make up for that with their energy & enthusiasm.
If you like their music in studio, I'd say definitely catch them live if you can. They run through the show pretty quick, about 75 minutes, but that's pretty good for a still young band.

I'd love to see them as would my daughter. I think they are playing Minneapolis this month, but can't quite get there
