My 2 cents, from someone who was seeing action for the 1st time this summer:
- Monroe played well, especially when he seemed to get angry a few times and take it to people in the post. Had a nice hook with the right hand (off hand) that was impressive; another very nice move where he took a power dribble, faked one way and finished the other. As someone mentioned he ran the court pretty well in spots and was rewarded with easy buckets -- if he went all out more often the guy would be pretty dominant -- as it is he will be one of the top frosh in the Big East if not the country. Also, up close he has impressive size and a great frame - don't be surprised next year when he stands next to Blair, Harangody, etc and towers over them. A solid athlete, not the most explosive, but pretty damn good for his size. Also would like to see him mix it up a bit more underneath - sometimes he seems to shy away from contact.
- Jason Clark - I am very excited about this guy. He is going to be disruptive at the defensive end. Great speed and athleticism. I love his length, and he put his long arms to use a few times at the top of the press. On the offensive end his dribble needs some work (a bit high), and didn't see him shoot from long range, but he has an attack mentality and can finish around the basket. Also made some very nice passes. Good looking prospect.
- Vaughn was a real highlight for me - this guy is going to help immensely next year. about 6'8.5 I would guess, with a nice build (though can stand to get stronger). One thing I loved is how he gets after it on the boards -- seemed to be involved with most rebounds, and he has a nice wingspan that allows him to get his hands on a lot of passes. Another thing I loved -- his touch for a big - can catch at the foul line, turn, and put up a soft shot. Not an A+ athlete, but I think some on this board have sold him short in this department. Caught a sweet alley-oop from Freeman in the halfcourt (other team was playing zone). Also blocked/altered some shots. Was icing his knee after the game, hope nothing major. Bottom line - getting this guy eligible this year is a home run, and I see him playing big minutes.
Other quick takes: Sims didn't do too much, but really didn't get many opportunities. Like his length, and his shot in warm-ups looks great for a big man. Obviously needs to put on some muscle before he can be a big factor in Big East under the boards.
Nikita, as people said hit a number of long range shots and looked good doing it. As has also been written, he has put on some muscle, so he is not getting pushed around as much as last year - having said that, needs to finish stronger around the rim. I don't see any reason why he can't give us at least 10 solid minutes/game -- having a 6'7 lefty spotting up at the 3 pt line and draining threes is a nice thing to have.
Wright and Freeman - what can you say, these guys are studs. Yes, Wright is wild at times and needs to be more controlled. Yes, Freeman seems to coast at times. But Wright is as explosive as they come, and when you see it in person you can't help but be impressed. And Freeman's shot is so pure it's silly - when he puts it up from the wing you always believe it's going in.

My feeling that people are going to sleep on these two big time this year - Hoya fans included. Between the hype for Monroe, seeing what Sims and Vaughn can do down low to help replace Hibbert, and wondering if Summers is going to step it up, it almost gets lost in the shuffle that these two were top-ranked, McD's all-American recruits with only 1 year (or less in Wright's case) of college experience. What a great problem to have.

I agree KC, I think the national media overlooked Freeman a lot last year. He averaged around 9 points a game shot 50% from the field and 40% from three and yet no one really talked about him. He may not be flashy but he gets the job done and has deceptive athletisim. With Wright missing all of the Big East season, many probably forgot he was on our team. I think our backcourt in general is going to surprise some people. We are going to be very quick, something you couldn't say about the last few Hoya teams, without giving up too much outside shooting. Anyone who has seen Clark play, how is his handle? Is he going to be able to help break the press effecitively?

I think the team as a whole is going to surprise people.
We have four excellent players returning, and three new guys, each of whom will make a significant impact this year!
And, just as you were saying the impact of Wright and Freeman might be underestimated, even among Hoya fans, even more so -- the impact of the best coach in college is also being underestimated. This is going to be a VERY good team.

i think we will surprise especially with julian adding some big depth still think greg is great forward point forward ala jeff so henry and julian NEED to be at center and austin I'm still predicting Monroe starts at center but plays PF during half of his minutes throughout a game.

Anyone who has seen Clark play, how is his handle? Is he going to be able to help break the press effecitively? I've seen Clark play 3/4 games now and, though his handle is above average, as was stated earlier, I agree that he dribbles a little high and can become more proficient at seeing whole floor when he brings the ball up. That said, he was likely counted on to be a scorer the last few years and playing PG in Kenner (followed by working with JTIII and his staff) will allow him to progress into a fine point guard who can slash to score/pass and rebound; plus--especially if you haven't seen him in person--you'll be hugely impressed with his wingspan and active hands on defense.

I think Clark is going to be great. My one issue is, as it is with most Freshman, weight. He is very very skinny. One year from now the added weight from lifting will help him when his drives become contested in the halfcourt by "bigs."

Having seen him only in highlights and all-star games, he seems to have a wiry strong type of frame. Obviously he'll need to work out and improve his strength, but I think he'll hold up fine - especially at the level of minutes he's going to play.

Clearly, HoyaBlue's task this year with Greg Monroe is well laid out. I think it's patently obvious that a Jeff Spicoli-Charles Jefferson, Fast Times-style incident will be required before each and every game. Sleeping giant....awaken!

My concern isn't really durability as far as wearing out over the course of the season, it is more about his finishing with contact, something that always seems to be a problem for the skinnier players when they make the transition. Granted, his wiry frame will help him navigate through traffic, I can't wait for him to get bigger so he will be able to absorb contact so that in addition to getting by defenders he will be able to finish strong when they hack the crap out of him. But he will be great like I said.

During the Clyde's game, there was a sequence where Mouton somehow got Vaughn's leg up in the air and held it there. Vaughn elbowed Mouton in the neck to get him off. (Mouton got called for the foul, and he stopped guarding Vaughn after that.) While I don't always condone elbows, it was a sign that Vaughn plays with fire and isn't just going to lay down and take someone trying to muscle him around, which is very encouraging. In addition to his tangibles, Vaughn may have that PEJr-type intensity.

Anyone who has seen Clark play, how is his handle? Is he going to be able to help break the press effecitively? From the games shown live through Internet feeds I believe he will be excellent in breaking the press. Along with Chris, we will have two of the fastes players in the BE. As for his frame, Charles Smith was wiry thin as a senior and he is still one of the best penetrators and finishers we've ever had. We'll see about Clark's heart and desire.

Hello Hoya Fans, Long time reader first time poster...(old Ken Beatrice reference,lol).....anyway....I basically signed up to give some perspective for the people who haven't seen the Kenner games, I've made all the "hoya" related games thus far, wont be making this weeks, work interferes.....I figured I'd try to give some other perspectives of what I've seen.
1st- Austin is playing great this summer, his jump shot has been as consistent as always, but even more noticeable is that, the Clyde's seem to be specifically giving Austin the reigns to run point, and bring the ball up in every situation, 1st game i thought it was by accident but its happened everygame. And there are other more than efficent small guys that would do a better job on the team, i.e. from the1st week Vernon hamilton former point of Clemson, but it seems the coach really wants Austin handling the ball, which i must say must be by the design to get him ready to play more 2G this year because Vaughn will play alot of minutes at the 4/5 and Summers probably will be playing more 3 than 4.
2nd. Vaughn is exactly the interior bulk that we have needed against the likes of Pitt and others that have beat us up on the boards and pushing there way to the basket in simple post ups. he is willing to battle with people inside, also he runs the floor hard when he is playing wih an unselfish group. doesnt hurt when th epoint guard seems to be the bet friend on the team, as it seems Austin and Julian get along really well...they tend to arrive together at the gym at the same time and sit together watching till their game for the most part.
3rd. I love Chris Wright's game as much as the next person but he hasnt looked like what i wanted him too this summer in terms of decision making. I know its a summer leauge game but there are some intuitive things a point should see that he would be wary of. Chris has done alot of 1vs..2 or 3 defenders trying to get to the basket and while some of these will be fouls in a real game, still he forces the issue in a way that you can see the same wild forays in a critical point in a game this coming year hurting us. I'd personally like to see Jessie be the PG again this year and use Chris off the ball for the most part, unless he is paired with jason Clark out there
4. Nikita is a dead-eye- shooter, i dont think people are reporting on the board how nice this guy's stroke is pre-game, durning game...if he is wide open its in consistently.its when he is forced to put the ball on the floor and make a move its still kinda mechanical... he seems to be really working on a drive left or right step-back fade move of the dribble, and really thats the only dribble move he has, but the accuracy on said move hasnt been there in a game, and his handle though okay isnt great enough in this arena to get that move completed. 5th..Greg monroe will be fine.....He isnt the 2nd coming, but he can score inside okay, tho he needs to get rid of that spin-pump fake lean left to shoot move, I even know its coming everytime, and im sue the staff will work wit him on it, i think we might have seen said work when he pulled out the righty hook countermove to the spin this past week 6th.. Henry sims is a talented player who gets after it, but he is too frail to be a force inside yet...He gets after it though so i cant fault him, but he gets pushed out of position too frequently by guys shorter than him in this league to be fair there havent been too many ove the back calls either. his shot is fluid as others have said but, he has one back to the basket move and its a dribble once, turnaround jump shot nothing going towards the basket ive seen. But whats good also with him and Greg is it seem that Roy really gets along with these guys so hopefully thats where Greg picked up his counter move and Henry may as well. 7th..Jason clark looks great to me...because he is everything Rivers wasnt...and to compare these guys is unfair to Jason, he is talent wise waaaaaaaay ahead of Rivers..But even more exciting is the hops Jason has, in pregame this past week him and Chris were having a dunking contest in the lay-up line and this kids head is up by the rim everytime. he really can get out on the break and beat people down floor if we dont get points off that this year ill be disappointed, but right now he isnt really a point...he is a 2 guard...he has decent handlebut he is an aggressive scorer.
Sapp has looked alright. Played great the 1st game, not some much this last one, but M&A has like 12 guys on their team so hard to get in a rhythm, its effected Omar too, he hit his open 3's this past week.
