Ok, just a heads up in advance - this is gonna suck compared to a FL recap. I wasn't planning on doing this so I have no notes or anything.
Tombs played the Bearcats (and only 30 minutes late!), who were not a particularly good team. They didn't have much size or skill, but I'm not sure where their players were from, as there was no announcer today. Tombs had it's full complement of players . . . and Roy.
Starting lineup was the usual: Wright, Clark, Nikita, Monroe, and Sims. Tombs got off to a hot start with a number of breakway baskets and went up 10-2. They then started playing sloppily, and the lead fell to 19-16. The end of the first half and start of the second saw a return to the earlier fastbreak-fest, and Tombs went on a 30-10 run and ended up winning an easy game, 71-51.
It's hard to take much from this game, as the Bearcats were totally overmatched physically and there weren't a lot of halfcourt sets.
Wright - Spotty game. Threw some very nice passes (both of the traditional and fancy over-the-shoulder variety), and probably had around 10 assists. He also had a lot of TOs, and it seemed like half of his FG attempts were blocked. Chris fairly consistently drove into the lane without much of an idea of what he was going to do and got swatted. His 3s weren't falling either.
Clark - Didn't get to handle the ball much today, but had about 10-12 points, all on the break. He finished well around the basket and had a few steals on D.
Nikita - Perhaps his best game of the summer so far. He knocked down three 3s, had a nice dribble move or two and a pretty outlet pass. His lateral quickness could still use some work (but he was defending a guard, since the Bearcats were small), but his D was not noticeably weak. Had around 13 points.
Monroe - Greg was arguably the best player on the floor today. He probably had around 20 and 8, and consistently beat his man down the floor for layups and dunks. A number of times he also threw the outlet that started the break or dribbled the ball up himself off of a board. He's going to be really useful if we decide to run more. He had a nice backdown and also nailed a righty hook (but I doubt that shot would go down for him very often). He also had the same problem he has had this summer, getting blocked around the basket due to a lack of explosion. On D he had one nice swat, but wasn't challenged inside very often.
Sims - Henry had his worst game of the summer. I think he only had 2 points, and he wasn't really involved on either end. He rebounded poorly, often getting in battles with shorter players and losing the ball out of bounds. He was also out of position on help D a number of times.
Roy - Not much to say here. He's obviously working on his jumper more than his traditional post moves, and it's been somewhat successful. His highlight was stripping a Bearcat at halfcourt, taking two dribbles, and slamming it down.
I didn't get to see Clyde's as their game was much later in the day, so I hope we can get a report from there. Jeff was in attendance, but not sure if he suited up for anyone.
Next weekend should provide some good Kenner viewing, as Tombs and Clyde's play back to back Saturday and Sunday.
