I was gonna do one a day, but I had to get this one out. Plus, it'll probably be the last. Old heads should enjoy this one.

I take that back....ewing's tip in off of the missed freethrow versus SMU in '84. That is exactly what immediately came to mind for me, unless you want to say the "Play" when JT signed his first contract to be HC of GU

the dagger's dagger versus UNC. I was just watching highlights from that game. And as crucial as JWall's 3 was, Jr's rebound at the end of regulation is just as big to me. That brick looked like it was going to be a gift for Hansbrough, but Ewing skied out of nowhere to grab it. I know it's not a given that Hansbrough would've gotten the ball, or that he even would've been able to make a basket, but that rebound gives me chills every time I see it.

I lean toward the JWall three. The biggest game of the last 20 years (outside of the OSU game), and that shot was just HUGE. No other word for it.
I'd throw in a dark horse candidate - a play that didn't really involve a GU guy. The Paulus fumble at the end of the Duke game was huge for our program. There was no opportunity to tie/win there because of it. And, the Duke game put our program on the map again such that we were no longer a "good school" with success in niche, non-power sports like we had been at least through the Esherick Error.

jessie also had a huge rebound in traffic at the elbow at the end of regulation where he got fouled by psyco t...giving the hoyas the possession they needed for the dagger's dagger.
if we are discussing the best...it begs the question....what's the worst? is it a forgone conclusion that the worst play happened 25 years earlier in new orleans. I know there are at least 5 reasons why it wasn't his fault... but come on now!

B&G, let's wait for ID to start the "worst plays" thread. That warrants its own thread, and there will be several pre-April 2004 nominations.

the title of the thread is "single most important play" not "best"
as much as i hate to say it, it's gotta be fred brown in 82 for the importance/significance of a single play

Billy Martin's pass off Ho Bro's foot vs. Nova in '85 Championship. Wasn't GU up with the ball and about to go into/already into four corners? Its amazing how one play can change the outcome of a game.

Call me a pessimist (ha!), or ignore my thoughts, but Georgetown would have been the next dynasty from UCLA had this not happened. That's hard to let go of.

It also gave us the greatest moment in NCAA history with JT's bear hug 2 years later.
A friend of mine learned this in GRAD SCHOOL, no joke. They talked about JT telling Freddie he'd win a championship before he was done and it wasn't his fault. They used it as a leadership example of inspiring at low moments and celebrating the highs.
Bear hug. Not a play really but #1.

if you equate importance with most identifiable...then yes, it would have to be brown's chest pass to worthy with 6 seconds left in the ncaa championship game.

Biggest shot? Derrick Jackson's buzzer beater for a one point win against West Virginia that put the Hoyas into the NCAA for the first time in 32 years. Without that shot there is a good chance that we don't recruit Al Dutch, John Duren and Craig Shelton and that when the interviews start for coaches to recruit Patrick that we are not even on the list. Very close second, Jon Wallace against North Carolina.
Shot by an opponent that hurt the most? My personal nightmare was during the 1985 championsip game. About halfway during the second half both Ewing and Nova's Ed Pinkney ( who we had tried to recruit) have three fouls. Pinkney, posted in the lane for at least two seconds before receiving the entry pass goes into an extended move (three seconds), takes at least four baby steps (travelling) and lunges into a completely set Patrick Ewing whose arms are straight up in the air (charging) while throwing up an awkward push-hook. Incredibly Ewing is called for the foul and the ball goes through the basket for, ultimately, a three point play and Ewing goes to the bench. Flip any of those calls around and I believe we win by five or six.
