In clutch: Senior Smitty

I have never seen Smitty, but Jeff Green and Rain might need to be added to the clutch category. Jeff had least three game winners in the final seconds his junior year. Jon had the three to send us to overtime against UNC and the clutchest free throws I've ever seen in person on the road against Marquette.

Jim Barry
I just needed to throw in an old-timer. During his second season he averaged 19 points a game shooting 63 percent from the field. And he didn't miss foul shots. Some say he was better than his brother until his knees gave out.

I disagree SF. His shot selection was bad, but he could stroke it. That's possibly true. Vic never met a shot he didn't like.

f you are referring to Rick Barry, I don't believe they were related. I think that is a common misperception. I'll leave this to Nevada for confirmation, but both Jim and Rick grew up in Elizabeth NJ.

Jim and Rick Barry where not related,BUT i would like to see his numbers, remember, he is still the single game leader(with Jake Gibbons number 2) before the "3" !!

Dove, If you could add a little to support that "not related" issue I would appreciate it. Back in the day, I thought they were related. But in more recent years I recall someone telling me they knew for sure that the two Barry's were not related. Because they came from nearby towns at about the same time and were both so awesome, everyone assumed they were brothers or at least related. I only have a vague recollection of someone telling me they weren't, no hard data - or credible anecdotal evidence. Barry was before my time so I never saw him play. I would have a hard time believing he was a better shooter than Sleepy.... but then, no one else was better either. As for numbers, Barry still has 3 of the top 10 individual scoring games for GU, the highest being 46 against FDU. Iverson had two games of 40 (Arizona, Seton Hall). Braswell also had a 40 game vs UVA in OT. www.hoyabasketball.com/records/bb-indiv.htmBarry's Numbers were:Year ---- FG -- FGA.....%.......FT....FTA....%.......PPGSoph ---- 205 512 .. 40% .... 178 .. 226 .. 78.7 22.6 Junior --- 165 260 .. 63.5% ...110 .. 127 .. 86.6 19.1 Senior ---- 79 181 .. 43.6% ... 40 .. 55 .. 72.7 .. 11.7 CAREER 449 953 47.1% 328 408 80.4% 17.3 www.hoyabasketball.com/records/bb-indiv.htmAnd an excerpt from DFW's history site www.hoyabasketball.com/features/top100/j_barry.htmAs a recruit, he could shoot from the inside or outside, whether on a drive or a spot-up jumper. And if he got to the free throw line, he was close to automatic. Teammate Jim Christy simply said "I've never seen a ballplayer like him."
By many accounts, Jim Barry was the greatest of the Classic Era players, and could have been even better had he not been sidelined by an ongoing knee injury that robbed him of a pro basketball career.
Jim Barry grew up in Elizabeth NJ, a two time all state forward at St. Peter's Prep, while another Barry --future Hall of Famer Rick Barry--was an all-stater down the road at Roselle Park. Rick went to Miami in 1961, Jim to Georgetown, where his 24.4 points and 14.8 rebounds topped the freshman scoring statistics. But not even a first year on the McDonough hardwood could prepare Hoya fans for a rookie season like none other in Georgetown's annals.

Lic, did you remember seeing Barry?
One more thing, he's listed as a 6'6 F. One might assume he did a lot of his scoring inside -- i.e. higher percentage shots
There are a lot of guys on the Hoya record books who had higher career shooting percentages than Sleepy, including #1 Dikembe Mutombo 64.4% #2 Patrick Ewing the Elder 62.0% #4 Roy Hibbert 60.3% #5 Craig Shelton 59.1 for a 6'7 PF
But those stats don't make them better shooters than Eric "Sleepy" Floyd of Gastonia, NC.
Sleepy actually comes in at #24.

I'd go Sleepy, especially when one considers his range and what he made from behind 19' 9". There remains no doubt in my mind he buries the last shot against Carolina if Fred gets him the ball.
