Have I died and gone to heaven?? This ESPNU Georgetown marathon is unbelievable.
As a kid, I watched all the games as they were played. While I was a huge Hoya fan back then, I'm not sure I appreciated just how good the team was during the Ewing Era. In my mind, I always considered us as a defensive team that wore other teams down (loved watching the full court press and watching the team settle back into the zone once broken../ it was so fluid) ... but I forgot how good we were on offense. I forgot how much we pushed the ball and ran the break every time we could... and we had finishers. I forgot how good Michael Jackson actually was. He definitely got the most out of his ability and was Jonathan Wallace-like in many respects and probably better. Nothing surprises me about Wingate or Williams... they were the ultimate out there on the wings. I did forget how much bounce Martin had... forgot about all the offensive rebounds that led to dunks for him. In fact, both he and Ralph did a great job scoring off of misses and getting weak side boards. Horace was Horace...underrated athlete... great defender... had hops ... and could shoot from 30 feet out. I could go on and on about Perry, Ronnie, and Gene .... but I won't. Finally, Ewing was better than I even remembered. What an incredible athlete!!! I don't know if we will ever see a player play with more fire and tenacity as he did. I was also stunned by how fast Patrick was.... he got up and down the court faster than any center (including perhaps Olajuwon) I have ever seen. Wow...those were the days.
Sidenote: I hope JT3 unleashes this year's team like his daddy did and let them run.

I think I'm not the only one who would be willing to hand over many of teh monies in exchange for some CDs/DVDs of these games. Surely there's someone out there with ESPNU and a TiVo recorder+burner.

Watching the first few minutes of GU v UCONN from '96 when we had Victor AND Allen, plus Jerome, Othella. WOW. UConn had Ray Allen, Travis Knight, Deron Sheffer as a Senior.
We played at such an incredible pace!
It is SOOOO much fun to watch Allen in these games. My gosh he was quick...and so involved with everything, encouraging teammates, stealing the ball, passing, shooting boards, you name it. OK, not the greatest Point Guard.... at least in the traditional sense.
I am really looking forward to this season -- and watching these games, you really want to see JT3 open it up a little. It can be done. That Duke game a couple years back. We have such an advantage in quickness and athleticism. Gotta use that. Combine that with the JT3 O and D.... whoa baby!
How soon can the season start?!?! And so much pressure!

this Hoya marathon is amazing, I am testing the limits of my DVR memory space -- Gtown-UCONN from '96 is Hoya pressure D at its finest, with the Hoyas in full attack mode -- Iverson was a man possessed, flying all over the place. and what about Victor Page's dunk in the 1st half where his head was basically at the rim. great stuff, and the crowd was amazing that night.
also very impressed with the game a freshman Michael Jackson put up in the Carrier Dome in '83 --31 points, including basically the game winner in front of a record crowd that was hostile -- we need some of that from Chris Wright this year!

I'll add my own name to the list of people who would be interested in getting copies of these games. I don't have ESPNU and I'm stuck in work most of the day anyway--in that regard, I'm not enjoying my internship's little preview of adulthood.

Wow. I don't think the board needs to be asked for recommendations, maybe just MCI. Then he can provide the tapes, too!

First, I'd like to add my name to the list of people who wish they got ESPNU (not just today and tomorrow, but especially so). Second, the 48 hours of programming was one of the top stories on tonight's SportsBusiness Daily "Closing Bell." Nothing new, but I figured that I'd post the section anyway: GEORGETOWN STUDENTS SCHEDULE ESPNU PROGRAMMING VIA CAMPUS CONNECTION
A group of Georgetown Univ. (GU) students beginning at midnight last night have scheduled 48 hours of programming for ESPNU as part of ESPN's Campus Connection program. The slate of programming is devoted to GU athletics and primarily features men’s basketball games from '83-'08, in addition to men's and women’s lacrosse and sailing. The students who worked on the schedule are Nick Sementelli, Bridget Geraghty, Paul Campbell and Peter Keszler (THE DAILY). Well done to all involved.

The Hoyas take over ESPNU -- Is this something that has been done before with other schools? or is this a First for ESPNU.
Either way, how did this come about? Who's idea was this? I think it is just great.
And I am sure we can all imagine lots of other schools doing this, if they haven't already. UCLA UNC Indiana maybe even a couple other BE schools who shall remain nameless!

The second thing is..
Watching these games is reminding me of why I have been such a huge GU fan all these years. Man these teams were great.
It just brings back one long time lingering question. Why didn't we reach more Final Fours and win more titles? So many great players and Great teams. That '89 team was awesome... yes, I know... but seeing it again is frustrating all over again!

Here's another thought. Seeing all these great teams that Pops had during his three decades at GU, and all the different players. The Merlin Wilson/Jonathan Swift era Derrick Jackson Duren/Shelton Sleepy Ewing/Martin/Wingate/Williams/Jackson Mourning/Mutombo/Smith Othella/Iverson/Jerome/Victor
You get the idea.
So far, in the JT3 years we've only seen the Green/Hibbert/Wallace/Ewing era
That's his entire body of work at GU. Pretty successful!
The next era starts now. Who knows how many stars are going to appear on the Hoya Horizon this year and in coming years. WOW! What a GREAT time to be a HOYA fan.
Current students -- The rest of us are very envious! Enjoy every moment!

One thing that jumps out at me in watching Big John's teams is how relentlessly they attacked the glass. Our rebounding on both ends of the court was simply outstanding. Like in the '85 BET Championship game, we're playing the nationally no. 2 ranked Redmen and in the middle of the second half Len Berman mentions that we had a 30-13 rebounding advantage! Unbelievable. It's one quality that I keep hoping JT III's teams can recapture.

Lets not forget you are seeing mostly those old JT teams at their best. Not the games in which the Hoyas made a name for themselves as being woeful shooters and a bit too disorganized on offense. Not the games in which the Hoyas fullcourt press wasn't working and the Hoyas had to prove themselves strictly in the halfcourt game. And, yes, from everything I read and was told they had that reputation as often sluggish on offense even during the Ewing years.
Sure I would love to see III's team be more dominant on the boards and see a lot more fast breaks. But what do you give up in return? Oh, I see. You guys want the Hoyas to retain the same offensive efficiency, the same team approach and cutting on offense, the same high percentage shooting, the same ability to not foul the opposing teams and play smart defense in the halfcourt as well as bringing back the dominance on the glass, the same full court pressure, the same fast break style of the Ewing and Iverson eras and the same hardnose attitude and arrogance that the best JT Jr. teams had. Oh, well, that would be like the best team....of all time. And its almost impossible for any team to have all of those traits. So instead you'd have to put less emphasis on one or two things the Hoyas do well now to put more emphasis on one or two things the Hoyas did well back in the day.

And, yes, from everything I read and was told they had that reputation as often sluggish on offense even during the Ewing years. Actually, in portions of that Memphis game you can see full evidence of some of the less-inspiring 90's teams. Lineups consisting primarily of John Jacques, Chico, Big Don Reid, and even some Kevin Millen to boot are typical of the bulk of the post '89-90 Hoya rosters. At least there wasn't a Derrick Patterson or Pascal Fleury sighting. And in that game, you can see the disorganized offense too, and Iverson didn't really help matters. Granted, it was only like his 6th game since not playing all of the previous year. I enjoy watching that team (actually more so the Alonzo era) because it brings back a lot of memories and I love the umitigated aggressiveness the Hoyas played with, but it also makes me appreciate JTIII's offensive system and the multitalented (offensively) players we can watch today.
