Need a little help here.... My brother, a Georgetown grad (SFS '86), has a 7 year old son who is just starting to really get into the Hoyas. While my brother is a big fan of the Hoyas... he's not quite as fanatical as most of us on this board. In any case, my nephew is always asking me questions about G'town history and I thought I'd help him out by starting him out with a library of 4 Georgetown games that he must watch. I am hoping these four games might give him a better idea of where we started (in terms of the modern era goes) and where we are headed. I have two questions that I was hoping the board might help with. First, what four game would you select? And second, where can I order copies of these games from.... is there a good website that I can get them from? As of now, I am thinking (1) Carolina - Gtown (1982), (2) Houston - Gtown (1984), (3) not sure about this one...perhaps Duke (2006), or would a Duke game from the Alonzo era be better?, (4) NC-Gtown (2007). Any thoughts would be helpful.

Man, I was really hoping this was a thread about Lauinger being blown up to build a new Library. Or at least them remodelling the outside.

I would pick that same list of 4, B&G, if I wanted to show someone what winning at Georgetown is about and 3 of the biggest wins. I would probably start there.
If you want to convey the rivalries and the spirit of the game and the rivalries, I'd probably pick the Manley game, the Sweater game, the Duke game, and something else.

Other suggestions:
Big East Championship 1989
Win against UConn at US Air Arena in 1996.
'90 Big East-Acc Challenge win over Duke team that would win the championship later that season (in April of '91).
GTown win over Ohio State in the Round of 32 during 2006.

Those are some great ones guys. Thanks!!!! No matter how painful it is... I might have to resort to the '85 championship game... may take my nephew a few years of therapy to get over that one. I like the BE Championship option in '89 as well. Funny that no one included anything from the Iverson era...like when we pounded UCON for 40 minutes in a reg. season game at USAir.

I would replace the 84 title game with the 84 semi-final game against Kentucky. In the first half, the Hoyas were down by double digits and Ewing was in foul trouble. At the end of the first half, Michael Graham cuts the lead to single digits with a jam. The Hoyas' defense, led by Gene Smith in his final game, takes over in the second half. A very, very good Kentucky team finishes shooting 9 percent from the field. Also, the video has some classic moments, like Kentucky coach Joe B Hall throwing a fit after a Ky air ball. To my mind, this game was the epitome of the tough tenacious Hoya basketball of the 80s.
The 84 champiosnhip game was great, don't get me wrong. But the Kentucky game really sums up an era.
Also, wasn't this the game where the Georgetown fans chanted "Say you're sorry!" at Brent Musberger until he held up the Hoya Paranoia shirt on national TV? Classic.

To me the symbol of what Georgetown Basketball is about:
1. 1984 BET Final against Syracuse---that provides the entire spectrum of why Hoyas are hated, feared, and respected. Boeheim throwing a chair in the postgame press conference because he was so Editeded is just icing on cake. The minute things got physical the Hoyas "accomodated you"--as Pops would say. Graham punking Andre Hawkins, Ewing dominating the game, and Hoyas taking out Pearl in a great performance.
2. The Sweater Game--to this day this is the greatest hyped game I've ever seen for a regular season game. It didn't need the modern day phony hype that ESPN does for Duke-UNC--this was the real thing--1 vs 2--the 2nd of what would be 4 matchups and still ranks as one of the most watched CBB games ever.
3. 1989 Hoyas against LSU at the SuperDome. Even though it's a loss--look at the crowd/appeal of the Hoyas facing off against LSU.
4. Oh hell, who am I kidding--any tape of a Ewing Era Hoya game, any tape of a Zo game, any tape of an AI game, any tape of a III coached team--that will bring him up to date.

Games against the cuse have GOT to be on the list: the Manley Game;
some of the BET matchups in the first 10 years of the league (yes, even any loss);
the game at the dome in '90 when Pops got three T's - All at the same time; one from EACH ref. He started his day with an Orange towel draped over his shoulder (almost in a similar vain as the sweater game at MSG), and ended it by waving to the ____ fans on his way to the locker room (we STILL would've won if not for a STUPID foul by (unnamed HOYA);
and finally, ALL THREE cuse games of 1987 - with REGGIE and the Miracles pulling out two incredible wins in the regular season (one in OT on the last shot of the game), and the BET Final which solidified a Number One Seed for that Special team of OVERACHIEVERS...
THOSE are GREAT Places to choose from or Start IMO. HOYA SAXA BABY!!

You're right about this game...more than any, the Kentucky game represents Georgetown Basketball perhaps more than any other. Kenticky had a great team, Bowie, Turpin, Kenny "Sky" Walker, Winston Bennet, Dickie Beal. After struggling to get anything done agaist the twin towers in the first half... Gene Smith and the rest of the team came out with a defensive intensity in the 2nd half that may never be matched again. It was trully unbelieveable. The best part of was when for three or four plays in a row, Coach Thompson isolated Wingate on Jim Master. Wingatejust kept blowing by Master for easy lay ups everytime. I've got to get that game!!!

For entertaining basketball -- and the comeuppance of tongue-waggers -- it's hard to beat the 2006 BET semi against Notre Dame.

One of my personal favorites (cuz I was there sitting directly behind the basket for the final shot)...... 1991/2 at the beautiful US Air Arena (still cap center then I think) against UConn when Joey Brown stole a pass, ran the floor and scored the layup to beat UConn by 2. In any case, it's tough to pick just 4 but for sake of reference, check out this page. www.hoyabasketball.com/features/classic.htm

If you could get your hands on the '87 Hoyas vs. Ohio State in the NCAA tourney, that would be a great one to have.
