Right, the only difference being that Hibbert was good and Macklin was not. Coach had the option of playing Macklin serious minutes for 2 years and didn't seem interested in doing it. Must be that Macklin was going to be the secret weapon for those last two years just like Tyler Crawford. Give me a break. He was and always would have been a backup. and why would you say that hibbert was good? back then not many outside the program were saying that. he wasnt playing consistent minutes (he wasnt ABLE, physically to) and wasnt very efficient out there. Your logic is flawed Dhall. Hibbert worked his Ass off to get to where he is now, Vern is more infinitely more athletic that hibbert was- you could argue he still is. There is no reason that vern couldnt be a starter on this team or in this league (FT aside, but that would be the case at any level of D1 Ball) Well, Hibbert started all 33 games and was the team's leading rebounder and second leading scorer as a sophomore on a team that finished well in the Big East and made it to the Sweet 16. I agree comparing Hibbert and Macklin makes no sense at all - another poster did that. The better comparison is Amadou Kilkenny-Diaw: a decent, but not very skilled, big man who certainly is worth having on the team but not going to make a difference in the long run.

Well, at least an offeseason full of roster speculation has been replaced by an offeseason debating the merits of Vernon and whether or not we will be good. That could be a positive depending on which debate annoyed you more

Comparing Vernon to Roy is asinine, but we don't need Vernon to be Roy. If Braswell doesn't qualify and no more recruits come in, we are horribly, pitifully thin up front. Vernon may be prone to fouling and may never be a reliable scorer, but he's big enough to guard another team's big man when Monroe and Sims get in foul trouble or need a rest. I think that even the most pessimistic projection of Macklin next year can't deny that he would play valuable minutes at 4/5.
And just as an aside, Vernon's block/minute and FG% numbers are very similar to Roy's sophomore year.

Did 980 say "Coach Thompson / Vernon confirmed" or was it really just "Washington Post reports that FoxSports.com reports ..."

Did 980 say "Coach Thompson / Vernon confirmed" or was it really just "Washington Post reports that FoxSports.com reports ..." It was just turning 1 pm so the Coach Thompson show hadn't started yet, but it was the guy doing the headlines (like during a commercial break right before the show) and all I heard was Georgetown big man Vernon Macklin to transfer. Nothing about anyone confirming and coach started the show talking about the wizards so I never heard him say anything. Had a bad feeling though that they probably wouldn't have said anything if it was iffy. I did check the 980 website too and saw nothing there.

im sorry...is macklin being compared to akd??? somebody has jokes Don't think about it too much. Apparently, at some point, Macklin became a virtually inconsequential piece of the team who has to get out of Georgetown or his future in basketball is ruined.

not wanting to add too much to the speculation (and sorry if someone has already posted this info) but macklin's facebook page currently lists himself as a Georgetown Alum '07, for what its worth.

Here’s the Pilot article on Vern from a while back: tinyurl.com/5zvojfThe only thing of note: There is nothing in the article remotely suggesting that he was unhappy or ready to jump ship. In fact, the kid either had a sudden change of mind or was blowing smoke. If it’s a decision based purely on basketball, it does not seem like an especially good one, given the opportunity he was going to have over the next two years. Wonder if all the whispering in his ear finally got to him.
