Didn't realize Perry had a fifth year option available to him. Even so, I have to think he could have stayed had he wanted: certainly Freeman and Watkins didn't "deserve" their 5th years any more than Perry.

I don't see how giving Owens four years of education and a degree is selling him out. No one would be asking him to leave; he just wouldn't be invited to have grad school paid for him.
My parents paid for my four years at GU but told me I'd have to pay for my own grad school. I never felt that they had sold me out.

Should Georgetown take away part of its promise to any player because he missed a couple of questions on his SATs? And why should he be asked to leave? ... Then you've sold out Daryl Owens, who will leave Georgetown with a sour taste in his mouth, and you've potentially poisoned the recruiting atmosphere . I don't understand that way of looking at things. GU would not be "pulling" DJ's scholarship. He's been here 4 years, got his education, will graduate soon, GU fulfilled it's committment... case closed. How is that wrong? or somehow mistreating DJ? Yes, there is an option that GU might CHOOSE to offer DJ a bonus extra year because of the unusual circumstances, but in no way are they obligated. Nor would there be any suggestion of ill will, breaking a commitment, or tainting our reputation with future recruits. As for Freeman and Watkins "deserving" an extra year, "deserving" had nothing to do with it. GU needed SIZE and they were the only options. They got the extra year because GU needed them, not because they "deserved" it. (That is not to say the were "undeserving". Simply that there was no further GU obligation at that point and "deserving" has nothing to do with the decision.) Regarding the other point of a school living up to its obligations by renewing a player's schollie over a four year period, I think the issues for both sides are: - Maintaining good academic progress - Being a solid citizen of the University community - Contributing to the team (a lot of room for interpretation here) - Getting the kind of PT opportunities that the player is looking for In other words, it goes both ways. If a player who was pretty highly recruited is a good student and citizen, but is not getting the opportunities to play, it sometimes makes more sense -- for both sides -- to help that player relocate to another situation to which he is better suited. (Not necessarily the French Foreign Legion). As many have said, and based upon years of GU's (and others') track record, it is highly likely there will be "player movement" this summer. It is the norm throughout college hoops, and even more so when a new coach takes over. How we handle these situations is the key. If we talk to one of our players and both sides determine it is better to make a change... then we have a moral obligation to help that kid relocate to a suitable situation. I am sure T3 will do so. He is a class act, always has been, and will do the right thing.

Were there any implications from Saturday's game that Owens will be back next year?

Owens was honored before the game with Ross as a departing senior. I thought it was a little unfortunate that Ross never got in the game on Senior Night- I know it was close throughout, but I bet he could have taken a few minutes away from Sead or Crawford without hurting the team.

Ross not only should have gotten minutes but should have started. A lot of schools do this with a largely ceremonial "start" for their seniors. I think this is a nice touch and shows our respect for the guys who play four years whether or not they are big time contributors on the court.
I think UNC did this the other night. All of these guys are D 1 players and we aren't going to lose the game in the first minute. Give them the start and then try to plug them in throughout the game if possible. Just my thoughts.

All of these guys are D 1 players and we aren't going to lose the game in the first minute. Give them the start and then try to plug them in throughout the game if possible. Just my thoughts. I think that is a nice idea, but given how poorly GU played in the last few weeks, and how critical this game was, I think it was more important that T3 keep everyone focused on just how important this game was. And the team did start out well for a change. I do feel badly for Ross. Originally, Esh told him he needed to spend a Post Grad year playing ball because he lost his sr. year in HS to injury, and they wanted to give him some experience at the point. But when Luke Martin didn't qualify, Esh convinced the Ross family to come to GU right away. As we all know, Ramel continued to have injury problems his entire GU career. When he was finally healthy this year, he had a new coach, no proven track record, and did not figure in T3's future plans. In the early part of the season, he was getting minutes and making a contribution. Then in Hawaii, he played in the first game (Oral Roberts) and that was it. No more time for Ramel after that. I don't know what happened to change T3's mind. But Ross never really played since that time, except a few "emergency minutes" here and there. Ross is getting his degree, but his hoops hopes never were realized. And he lost his mom this year. Very tough. He has always been a good guy throughout. I wish him the best.
