Can somebody tell me why the Deputy Secretary of State sits behind the scorer's table at every Hoya home game? The last couple of season he would sit courtside, often bringing tag-alongs Tenet, Condy, and Powell. But did he get hired by the Athletic Department or something? How do I get to sit behind the scorer's table? www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/biog/2991.htm

Not sure what he's doing behind the scorer's table, but I know that he and Craig are good friends, and I'm pretty sure he takes an active interest in the Hoyas (see Courtland and Omari's participation in the U.S. Cultural Ambassadors program).
Tenet generally makes it to as many games as he can, being a G'town alum (SFS'68?) and now a professor in the SFS.

A buddy of mine works at State and says the soon to be former Deputy Secertary is a genuinely good guy. Is he also sitting near Courtland intentionally? I would think Mr. Armitage played a large role in getting Courtland and Omari into that Amassadors program.

So in other words, if I want to sit behind the scorer's table, I need to get Courtland and Omari new jobs?

I sit behind the scorers table at almost every game and I have never seen Armitage there. I was in section 100 Row B last night and did not notice Armitage. I have not seen Armitage at any games this year, and I suspect it has something to do with his support of Esherick. I did see Tim Russert at the game last night, and he usually only shows up for ND games. Mark Shields is a regular in the section behind the scorers table too. Maybe you are thinking of the bald guy who runs the clock, I suppose he resembles Armitage a bit, but trust me he is not the same guy.

I thought Tennet and Armitage had regular access to DeGioia's box and didn't sit courtside.

I saw Armitage at Howard I believe. It might have been UConn but I think it was Howard. I cannot imagine the psychology of those who might abandon the team for disposing of Esherick in favor of JTIII. I suppose there were people who favored McClellan over Grant in 1864, though, so anything is possible.

I have seen the Armitage double at the games. The clock guy, to the untrained eye, does look like him. I figured it was him for a while, until HoyaDestroya pointed out otherwise.

Forget Armitage: the real question here is how does one get to sit next to Jack? Buy him lots and lots of beer! Talk about David Ortiz, Curt Schilling or Trot Nixon in such an awe-inspired manner as to border on the homoerotic. Reminisce about when the Tombs used to be a good bar. Did I mention lots and lots of beer? Just kidding, Jack.

Seriously, how can any policy-minded Gtown alum not read this thread and beam with great pride? Just awesome.

I thought Tennet and Armitage had regular access to DeGioia's box and didn't sit courtside. Nah, Tenet always sat under the basket across from the student section for all the home games the last two years. Not sure if he still does or not, though. And I don't think you can look at anyone not coming to games out of support for Craig as being stupid, because they wouldn't be doing so as a statement that Georgetown made the wrong move; rather, they would be doing so in support of someone who is their friend. Imagine, if you will, that a good friend of yours was fired by the restaurant he spent 30 years at. It would not be out of the realm of possibility for you to decide not to return to that restaurant because you want to support your friend. Anyways, it's good to see these people at games, but anybody have any ideas for getting these luminaries to pump some dough into the program? I assume they don't pay for their tickets as "friends of the program" or whatever, so let's see Dick Armitage and Tim Russert present a big check to GU Athletics at halftime of a home game or something. Ha, like THAT'll happen.

Not sure where his son goes to school, but last year Tim Russert was definitely wearing a BC tie at the BC-Gtown game at MCI.

I suppose there were people who favored McClellan over Grant in 1864, though, so anything is possible. We might not understand the psychology of it all, but it is apparent that people have walked away from the program. There are more that a few people (including a few former HoyaTalk regulars) that simply threw up their hands and went on to other things. It really didn't matter if it was Craig Esherick sitting in that chair, or Mike Riley or Ronny Thompson--they simply had enough of the program and found something else to occupy their time. Sometimes I wonder those 3,900 people who signed the DeGioia petition, 90% of whom were under 25--whatever happened to them? Are they going to MCI? Are they filling up the membership rolls of the Hoop Club? Are they going on bus trips to Villanova? Where did all their collective enthusiasm go, and why?

Forget Armitage...not sure if anyone noticed, but Ted Leonsis was at the Rutgers game the other night. He arrive a few minutes after the game started with 3 flunkies who come in a special entrance.
He was sitting in the front row right across from the Hoyas bench.
Gotta love the support...

A few other former MCI regulars I have not seen this year, though it is possible they are in a box somewhere: Joe Lang, John Thompson (Pops), and of course Blake Esherick. If you recall, Armitage wrote a letter (I think it was to the Washington Times) chastising GU for firing Esherick last year. It was clear there was a personal relationship there and Armitage is not himself an alum, so I would not be surprised at all if he gave up his seats as a result of the coaching change. I believe Tenet has his own seats close to the GU bench and he still makes regular appearances.
As for the brave petition-signers, of course no one is surprised that they have not been heard from since they got their way with Esherick. It is true that many of those 3,900 were not in the DC area and so we cannot expect them to be filling the stands on a regular basis, but whoever started that petition lost an opportunity when they did not collect the email addresses of everyone who signed up so that they could communicate with them in the future and encourage them to join HHC now that the program is headed in a new direction.
And beer, Sox, and Tombs talk is always a good start for anyone who aspires to join me courtside, but the bidding is getting pretty intense these days so be sure to come with a full wallet and your A-game.

Armitage and Esherick are squash buddies, and good friends. Freeman got an internship in Armitage's office the summer before his final year this way, and that's how both Freeman and Faulkner got their basketball ambassador jobs. Another good example of the "Georgetown Mafia" in action in the federal government. Gotta love it!
I assume Armitage's loyalty to Gtown basketball went away as soon as Esherick got fired.
