Possible discrepancies arise in the timeline of events: www.herald-sun.com/durham/4-719002.htmlI hope that those guilty of a crime are punished and those that are not guilty and/or innocent are able to move on. I am disturbed the rush to judgment and mob mentality rampant in Durham.

I'm trying to figure out why this timeline is so odd and what questions it actually raises.
The dancers leave the house. They call 911 for a first time (though we don't know who it was, it was obviously them). At the same time, the party breaks up since the dancers are gone. The police arrive and the party has dispersed.
One dancer calls later from the grocery store after they're a few miles away and her friend is upset.
Am I reading this right, or is there something strange about this I'm not getting?

I hope that those guilty of a crime are punished and those that are not guilty and/or innocent are able to move on. I am disturbed the rush to judgment and mob mentality rampant in Durham. Yeah, I have a problem with this Simpsons-esque mob justice as well. What the hell is the point of posting that poster with the picture of EVERY player (sorry 'bout that alliteration) on the lax squad? Are they that freakin' lazy? What I want to know is, who put that poster up? If its the cops, I have one word for you: INVESTIGATE. Its not like these guys are fugitives on the lam. You know where they are, there is no reason to paint them all with the same brush. It just smacks of irresponsibility to me. If its the school, wow. Talk about throwing your student athletes under the bus. Don't get me wrong, they should make every effort to assist the authorities in bringing these guys to justice, but to put innocent guys right next to the guilty parties again smacks of irresponsibility. And whereas the cops are somewhat expected to be that irresponsible, I can't believe a university of Duke's prestige would be as well. ALL THAT BEING SAID... ... I hope they find the bigot thugs who did this and lock 'em up as long as possible. This isn't just rape/sexual assault, but it does smack of a racial hate element that made the alleged crime much worse than I bet it would have been were the dancers white. One of the articles I read raised an interesting point - is it possible/provable the players who booked the dancer ASKED for a black woman? Hmmm....

First of all I hope that the individuals that participated in the "rape" are identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and if found guilty serve the maximum amount of jail time. That being said what we have going now is an old fashioned Southern lynching except the victims of the lynching are the members of the DUKE LAX team. Whatever happened to "innocent until pr oven guilty". They have become scape goats for Duke bad relations with Durham and the fact that as DUKE LAX players (like HOYA LAX players) they tend to be from Prep schools and are generally financially better off than their fellow students. Since when was that a crime. Anyone in this day and age who is "shocked" or "upset" by underage drinking in college need a good dose of reality. I wonder how many of the contributers to this "board" participated in underage drinking during their days on the Hilltop. I didn't but back then we had common sense drinking laws and the legal age was 18. As for hiring a stripper; this was only going to lead to trouble and boy did it. An ESPN article suggested that an African-American stripper was requested because a "sexual" events was contemplated. I would have expected ESPN to stick to sports and leave the "social commentary" to The Washington Post et al. As for not coming forward I guarantee you that the team members are following the advice of their parents and their lawyers. When dealing with a crime of this nature you need lawyer, you are entitled to one and you had better take their advice. Once again this is a heinous crime but until someone is formally charge people should stop trying to lynch the DUKE LAX team

Fox News has been almost wall-to-wall on this story the past couple of days.

Still convinced Coach K bagged the tourney to minimize Duke's media exposure as much as possible while this story played out.
Can you imagine if they were in the finals while all this broke?
Also, did you notice a much lower saturation of Coach K commercials after this story broke?
Hmmmm.

That was probably not coincidental. It's like pulling airline ads when there's a plane crash which I think is still pretty standard.

While I am not sure how much Chevy advertising was aire during Final 4 weekend (I lost serious interest in the whole tourney when we lost to Florida), I do not believe there were as many period. Part of that may be because there are fewer commercials shown Final Four weekend (with ZERO bouncing from game site to game site), and part may be because Chevy might have front-loaded their airtime early in the tournament.
The only potential conspiracy I see at all possible is (if it has nothing to do with a Chevy decision) that CBS was no longer interested in airing Coach K ads after Duke was home in Durham after losing. There is simply too much money at stake here.

Duke lax coach resigns, rest of season cancelled ( link)

New information found in the resignation article:
"Earlier Wednesday, authorities unsealed documents stating that hours after the alleged rape, a player apparently sent an e-mail saying he wanted to invite more strippers to his dorm room, kill them and skin them. It was not clear whether the message was serious or a joke.
"The court released today a previously sealed warrant, whose contents are sickening and repulsive," said Duke president Richard Brodhead said in announcing the cancellation of the rest of the season.
...Investigators did not immediately return calls or e-mails seeking comment about the nature of the e-mail. But a lawyer for the player who purportedly wrote it said the content suggests his client is innocent.
"While the language of the e-mail is vile, the e-mail itself is perfectly consistent with the boys' unequivocal assertion that no sexual assault took place that evening," said attorney Robert Ekstrand. The e-mail "demonstrates that its writer is completely unaware that any act or event remotely similar to what has been alleged ever occurred."

For a school and institute that has terrible race-relations, this is definitely not going to help things.
Doesn't help that the dancers went to the Black college across town.

huge expose on ESPN moments ago. they had the same email from the smoking gun and the coach resigning. it looks like its only going to get worse for the school.
my prediction -- the cover of a major newsmagazine this week -- a nightmare for any parent who just sent in their deposit check to their youngest daughter's new college.

a nightmare for any parent who just sent in their deposit check to their youngest daughter's new college. Reminds me of when my roommate and I used to yell at tour groups walking by our dorm in Village C freshman year: "SEND US YOUR CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS!"

isn't just rape/sexual assault, but it does smack of a racial hate element that made the alleged crime much worse than I bet it would have been were the dancers white. other than murder, there is not a worse crime than rape, so how is it that since it was racial motivated rape or that the alleged perps were in part motivated by their bigotted ideas- allegedly- that this is much worse? if my white daughter gets raped by a white man it is less heinous as if a black man does it while degrading her based on her heritage and telling her how much he hates white people? once you cross the line to planning and committing the most disgusting of heinous acts you can committ as a human being, anything else becomes part of the story and the evidence but cant make it worse, there is no where to go at that point.

In general, I agree that bias-motivation does not make crimes worse in and of themselves, but as far as this story goes, it is clearly an aggravating factor for a school and a city that have stark unresolved class/race issues. They should not, in my mind, get any harsher punishment than other rapists if convicted, but you could see why the story is causing deeper unrest in that community as a result of the racial angle.

Well, according to your state's hate crimes statute, yes, it would be worse.

One coach and an entire team are being held responsible for: a) a crime that was possibility committted by three members of the team b) the pooor relationship between Duke and Durham c) the fact that the radical left is calling this a hate crime (if a white women is raped by an African American is this a hate crime) d) you have a school is students a famous for their "behavier" at basketball game and are required to sleeps in tents and miss class to get tickets (so much for priorities) e) the schools is feeling guilty about being white and exclusive
Sounds fair to me
