Two more recruits: Danny Harris of NY, a middle distance type, and Sandy Roberts of NC, distance. Danny ran a 1:55.95 800m indoors this winter; he has also run the 400m in at least 50.98, while Sandy finished 7th in the HS boys' mile at Penn today in 4:16.51 (in which other Hoya recruit Alex Bean finished 2nd).

Interesting, I chcked out Sandy Roberts, he has run 4:08 for 1600 as a junior and 8:58 this yr for 3200--looks like a high elite recruit.
His Pr's are not too far off Bumby's--apparently the boys mile at Penn was very tactical, a lot of the big names finished in the back. Great run for my local boy Alex.

Looks like the men got three elite guys who can help right away at 1500-5K, i.e., Bean, Roberts, Gerber. Bean also probably has good potential at 800 and may be able to help immediately in a 4X8, though probably not in an open 800. The other guys seem to be near elite, but may not contribute as freshman. The men will be loaded at 1500-10K assuming these guys plus other young guys on the team continue to improve. They are still probably a little thin at the 800.
The women seem to have gotten one elite runner who could contribute immediately Renee Tomlin. Lauren Grgory has run a couple of fast times, but its not clear that she could step in as a freshman-as the women have several strong 400-1500 young runners already.

Another recruit: Tanore Barrow from CT in the throws. She is in the 37-38 foot category in the shotput.
Also, this:
New Haven, Conn. — July 12, 2005 — Seven high-achieving minority students from the New Haven Public Schools have been named this year’s Shafer Scholars.
The scholarships cover tuition, room and board, allowing each student to take two five-week Yale College courses during the summer while they live on campus. In addition, each student receives a stipend of $450 for books and other expenses.
The Shafer family of New Haven has provided funding since 1980 for the Shafer Summer Scholarships. In 1991 Mark Shafer (Yale College Class of 1937), a New Haven native and graduate of Hillhouse High School, established an endowment making the program permanent.
Students apply to the program through the guidance counselors of their schools. Yale bases its admission decisions on the students’ academic achievement and leadership potential.
This year’s winners are Tanore Barrow, James Hillhouse High School; Tiffany Bromfield, James Hillhouse High School; Leelyn Chong, Hill Regional Career High School; Kristina Melvin, Cooperative Arts and Humanities; Samantha Reaves, Wilbur Cross High School; Jermaine Damon Thomas, James Hillhouse High School; and Wanda Vargas, High School in the Community.

The women recruited a good sprinter/jumper. From two years ago she did a 24.92 200m and last year she jumped 19'2.75" (which is longer than any of the performances of any women on the team this year).

Another distance recruit, Dan Gerber from Texas, finished 2nd in the 3200 at his state meet:
3200 The anticipated battle of 3 Foot Locker finalists was reduced to 2 when Duncan Phillips dropped this event to focus on the 1600, due to concerns about a sore back. And to no one’s surprise, Southlake Carroll soph Colby Lowe and The Woodlands sr Daniel Gerber turned it into a 2-man race. Lowe led throughout until Gerber passed him with 500 to go. Gerber opened up a slight lead, but Lowe closed on the backstretch and made his final move with only 50m left. Lowe captured the gold in 9:05.17 as Gerber tied up badly, finishing 2nd in 9:08.03.
Lowe felt that “the race was awesome. I wanted to run well since you never know when you might have another chance for a state title. When he went around me (just before the bell lap) I was feeling great so I just went with him.”
Splits: 67.1, 2:15.9 (68.8), 3:24.2 (68.3), 4:34.0 (69.8), 5:42.5 (68.5), 6:54.5 (72.0), 8:03.9 (69.4), 9:05.17 (61.3) (Gerber led lap 7, all others Lowe)

Wow that's great news on John Maloy, a 1:52 open 800 runner. I think he and Bean will help improve our 4 X 800 team, though they are probably a couple of years away from being nationally competitive in a collegiate open 800.
If this is the full list of recruits it seems that we got 4 national level runners each on the men's (Bean, Roberts, Maloy, Gerber) and women's(Tomlin,Gregory, Wernick,Johnson). The other recuits would seem to be competitive at a state level(Harris, Hill) for the men or a local/county level for the others.
Interesting that the men focused on the 800-5k, while the women on the 200-1500m for the national caliber recruits.
